Help with pepper

I have a 2 year old Bih Jolokia (San Diego, CA). It is a beautiful, lush plant, loaded with buds. The flowers open and within a few hours of opening, the entire stem with the flower fall off. I have checked the soil and the plant for pests...none there. What could the problem be?
