Hendrix1326's Glog for 2012, yay!

Okay, so I have been incognito here on the forums for the last couple of months. Been distracted by video games, working on house projects, etc. Anyway, I decided last week that once I laid the vinyl flooring in my laundry room that I would start germinating my seeds! I have settled on 20 varieties for this year, with (as many as) 50 plants, some of which I will keep at my mother's house, since she has a big garden space that won't all be used this year. I have the following varieties planted in Jiffy pellets in a "Germination Station" heating mat. I represented the "Big 5" species (Chinense, Annuum, Baccatum, Pubescens, Frutescens) with at least one variety, and also have a couple wilds (C.Lanceolatum, and one called "Tio") to round it out. Here is the list, with how many of each one I am growing in bold parentheses at the end:

Chinense:
01-Yellow Bullet Habanero (similar to Peruvian White, but with a distinct canary yellow color) (2)
02-Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habanero (2)
03-Red Biquinho Iracena (3)
04-CGN-21500 (2)
05-Red Aribibi Gusano (F1) (2)
06-White Bhut Jolokia (3)
07-Red 7-Pot (2)
08-Turtle's Claw (Aribibi Gusano) (2)
09-Zavory (3)

Annuum:
10-Red Pimiento (3)
11-Monkey Face (3)
12-Chicken Heart (2)
13-Purple UFO (2)
14-Hungarian Wax Cross (Unknown F1) (1, only got one seed!)

Baccatum:
15-Hot Lemon Drop (Aji Lemon) (3)
16-Bishop's Crown (3)

Pubescens:
17-Red Rocoto (3)

Frutescens:
18-CGN-22184 (3)

Lanceolatum:
19-Lanceolatum (Unknown Designation) (3)

Unknown Species:
20-Tio (3)

Here are the initial pictures of my embryonic grow rig, which will be overhauled by the time the seeds sprout:

By the time the seeds are seedlings, I plan on having all of the rest of my supplies, which includes nursery pots, convertible heat lamps, thermostat, heater, oscillating fans, pulleys, reflective materials, the whole shebangabang.

I also wanted to thank the following THP members for either trading, SASBE-ing, or giving me seeds which are among the ones I am growing this year:

cmpman1974 (Biquinho, Purple UFO)
2gods (Aribibi Red, CGN21500)
paulmtonkin (Red 7, Monkey Face, Turtle's Claw)
Pulpiteer (Hot Lemon Drop)
ZanderSpice (Rocoto, CGN22184)
DudeThtsBad (Tio)
aropupu (Lanceolatum)
S.S. Tupperware (Bishop's Crown)
dshlogg (White Bhut)
melissa77754 (Chicken Heart)

Also, thanks to whomever sent me the Zavory, I couldn't remember or find any trace of who it might be, but I know it was one of the fine folks here on The Hot Pepper. Also, thanks to HH Farm on eBay, who was one of the shining beacons of hope for Chili-Heads on that abyss, and provided me with delicious peppers of all kinds, and to whom I owe thanks for the Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habs, as well as the Yellow Bullet Habs, among others.

Stay tuned, everyone, I will have dynamic updates over the course of the year on this thread, right up until final harvests and overwintering processes in probably October. Thanks for checking this thread out!

Take care of your own babies first! It is really difficult to keep up with the grow logs,
so i won't be offended!

All righty, well here is my first update in a few days. I've been taking care of the little ones and watching them grow. The last two days in particular I have seen a bit of a growth spurt from a few in particular. My Monkey Face, Red Pimiento, and Orange Cheyenne in particular are flourishing, and the first true leaves are now nearly as large or larger than the cotyledons, and it is so cool to see a marked difference even over the span of one day! Despite my potential misgivings about taking on so much this year, I am learning so much so fast about how to tend to the plants, that I'm glad that I chose to do so much. Observing within each species, I see the growth habits are generally following their marks.

The Chinense are tending to be smaller, stockier, and making sure their foliage is broad before putting out the next set of leaves. Very cool, and despite the slower growth habits, they are doing well, and the leaves keep coming now that they've hit their stride!

Annuums are the big dogs, with huge leaves, thicker stems, and faster growth in shorter intervals. Definitely can see why they recommend these for amateurs, since they are in general doing the best, in the sense that they grow big fast, and with less care than most of the others.

Baccatums are tall, but not leggy, with smaller cotyledons but big and broad leaves, similar to Chinense leaf habits in certain respects. I am really looking forward to these as the plants mature, and I anticipate I shall have to get some more stakes to make sure they don't flop over, because I know that Baccatums tend to be top-heavy and statuesque as the pods develop.

Frutescens, with the exception of the Bird's Eye, are pretty small, lighter colored foliage, and slow growing. I suspect that I may have mislabeled the Bird's Eye when I IDed it last year. It was a "mystery" pod in a bundle I got from a reliable seller on eBay, whom the pods turned out to be correctly identified. There was the Bird's Eye and what I call a Yellow Bullet Habanero. The Bird's Eye, as I've been calling it, is looking like an Annuum in its growth habits, so we'll see as the plants mature. Either way, the peppers when I tested last year, were very good, with a raspberry-sweet-tangy flavor with effervescent heat and a solid low-mid level burn. Tasted Frutescens-ish, but I can't be sure, as I am still comparatively unfamiliar with that species.

Pubescens are also tall, like the Baccatums, but aren't really leggy. Gorgeous fuzz on the stem, cotyledons, and leaves. Purplish stem, too, which I didn't know about. They are kind of touch and go in their growth habit, shooting up quickly in spurts, and then staying relatively the same size and foliage for a couple of days at a time.

Also, it has been quite a treat to see the different habits of the wild species that have sprouted so far (comparatively few to how many I've been trying to germinate...). The C.Eximium is nice and rich green, with slim and pointy cotyledons, and lush foliage that reminds me somewhat of Lilac leaves. It is fairly tall, and grows at a mid-to-upper-mid pace.

The C.Chacoense are very cool, similar to Frutescens in their small size, very pointy cotyledons, and tendency to grow slowly. First true leaves are still not totally set in, but one that is has a very round, bulbous shape to it.

The C.Species TC07246 is interestingly tall, with stocky cotyledons and squat foliage. It shot up relatively quickly, but has slowed down a bit over the last 4 days or so.

The Tio are the most prolific from the wild species. Thanks to Mike for the SASBE offer on those, what a cool opportunity to grow a Peruvian type of unknown type. They have a similar growth habit to Annuums, with bigger cotyledons, and quickly fluffing out the leaves, which become broad and long relatively quickly. They are also fairly tall, but in proportion to the large foliage.

I have also replanted 3 more seeds from seedlings whose cotyledons died. They are the second NagaBon, Aji Cito, and Red Biquinho Iracema. They have yet to sprout, but I only replanted them 2 days ago. I also have 3 new sprouts, which are both Red Sweet Banana, and the replanted second Peach Bhut Jolokia, which is already an inch tall with fully emerged cotyledons! Yay!

Here is the totals for each variety, both for germination (X of X...), transplantation (marked with asterisks *), etc. Here is the list, and to note RED=all sprouted, DARK ORANGE=mostly sprouted, PLUM=some sprouted, BLACK=none sprouted, and BOLD/UNDERLINE/ITALICS=replanted:

That's 73 out of 100 now, pretty solid! If some of these don't germinate after this round, I will be substituting some varieties for others. I will not give up on maximizing my varieties at 45 for this year!

so far so good my friend :)

cant wait to see pods! have you checked up your fresno's in my glog? :D i
t's a big happy bastard fresno :)

Thanks! Yes, I saw that. Glad to see that those seeds did well, and the big pod forming is looking really sturdy and healthy. Once it ripens, it's pretty tasty and sweet-tangy. A lot of sources say it's Jalapeno heat level, but in my experience, it's a tad warmer than that, with a solid tongue/sharp throat burn that is a little shocking once you swallow the pepper. Flowery, faintly fruity flavor, and the burn lasts for about 10 minutes at a mid level. Yes, they look like they're happy with their environment so far!

they will ned up in feta filled pepper ;)

my last test of feta filled peppers was with cherry bomb type pepper and i had added a chopped habanero in the feta mix before stuffing!

My god that was a very Nice Hot meal :)

you should try !

Okay, I will have some pictures of these up later, but I've spent the last couple of days repotting my seedlings to bury the stem up to the cotyledons in order to sturdy up the plants a bit so they don't become leggy. I also have some new sprouts: the replants of the C.Eximium C01225, as well as the replanted NagaBon #2.

I also transplanted my new seedlings of the 2nd Peach Bhut, 3rd Zavory, and 2nd Aji Cito.

Also, to report, my replants of the C.Lanceolatum didn't come through, I fear the seeds were drowned, since they were already poppy-seed-sized. Also, the replants C.Microcarpum, Chicken Heart, and Red Sweet Bananas either didn't do anything, were rotten, or in the Banana's cases, wouldn't root or grow any more. So, I scrapped all of these, and planted instead, the following:

(2) Orange Amazons
(1) more Trinidad Scorpion Morouga
(2) Extra Hot Hatch
(2) Hungarian Black Hot Wax
(2) Tobago Seasoning

Thanks to melissa77754 for the Morouga, Roland (YouTube) for the Amazon, meatfreak for the Tobago, and 2gods for the Hungarian Black. Also, thanks to the Super One store for carrying the Hatch for a short time last year, they're damn hot!

Here is my new germination/transplant list:

So, with the uprooted Red Sweet Bananas, and the NagaBon/Eximium sprouts, I'm still @ 73 out of 100, so solid!

You have some very cool varieties under way, hendrix!

Can't wait to see how they grow out!

Okay, short update! I transplanted 5 seedlings into the Solo cups this evening. They were:

(2nd) Purple Cayenne
(2nd) NagaBon
(3rd) Red Biquinho Iracema
(1st) Congo Orange Habanero
(2nd) C.Eximium C01225

I also repotted my bigger Bishop's Crown in order to bury the stem and encourage more root growth, since it was pretty tall, although quite sturdy considering. In any case, as a C.Baccatum, I see its natural tendency is to grow lanky, so I want to give it a better support system while it's small.

Here are the totals for each variety, both for germination (X of X...), transplantation (marked with asterisks *), etc. Here is the list, and to note RED=all sprouted, DARK ORANGE=mostly sprouted, PLUM=some sprouted, BLACK=none sprouted, and BOLD/UNDERLINE/ITALICS=replanted:

74 out of 100 sprouted now, and 73 of them are in cups, with the 3rd Bishop's Crown sprout almost ready to be potted up. I promise that there will be more pictures, as well as an update video added within the next few days!

Your record-keeping is impeccable, keep up the good work!

Thanks Paul! I have an update video ready to go, uploaded on my Hendrix Heat channel on YouTube(username Hendrix1326, as well!). Here is the link, the video being recorded @ 6am today. Excuse the noise, the fan/heater/Mylar make a lot of noise, and my voice drops at times since my son was asleep in the other room:

Enjoy!

Nice vid, hendrix! I like your light set-up - simple but effective!
The seedlings look great; they must love your grow closet!
Good luck going forward!

The Unknown Chinense has germinated 2 out of 3 so far, Karl. Nothing yet with the Jalapeno White. Can't wait see if the unknown looks the same as the ones you harvest the seeds from.

Cool to hear! Hope the Jalapeno White gets going, too. I look forward to growing those next year. It would be quite nice if the Chinense looks the same. I do not see why it wouldn't, since all the pods for sale at the store looked pretty much the same shape, too.

NICE lookin stuff Karl :) Good luck on this years GROW! lookin good so far :)

Thanks, Dale! I know that comparatively speaking, I got nothin' on your grow! However, for what space I have, I have been quite busy! It's been in the 60s and 70s here the past few days, so I gotta get out in my yard and clean in preparation for when I move my stuff outdoors.

On a short update, I purchased a new light fixture yesterday and set it up last night. I decided to implement (4) 100W-equivalent Soft White CFL bulbs, since I heard that a little 2700K light temperature mixed with 6500K Daylight is recommended for peppers in particular. I will be back atcha in a few days with a new update video, hope to make this one a little shorter to do a better synopsis of the overall progress as opposed to showing all 74 plants. I will start recording a new update video every week on Friday starting with this past week. It will be cool to see the progress each week, and I know that now that the plants are starting to get big, the growth will happen much more quickly as they tip past a certain point in their development.

Okay, here's a little new development! I was negligent in watering the latest seeds I planted, and as a result, they totally dried out, including my 3rd Bishop's Crown sprout. I decided that two was good enough for that one, and just dumped the entire wave of seeds and started over with 27 new jiffy pellets, since the peat pots/soil I tried to germinate those in almost totally failed...

That being said, I picked and chose amongst several that I had planted in that wave, eliminated others, and chose from some new ones that I wanted to try. Today, I replanted the Extra Hot Hatch (2), Kori Sitakame (1), Hungarian Black Hot Wax (2), Tobago Seasoning (2), White Pearl Habanero (1), Cantina Yellow (2), Trinidad Scorpion Morouga (1), Orange Amazon (2), and Orange Manzano (1).

In addition, I eliminated the C.Parvifolium, C.Praetermissum, Aji Caballero, Cumari ou Passarinho, the 2nd White Pearl Habanero, Aji Crystal, the 3rd Bishop's Crown, the 2nd Congo Orange, and the 3rd Orange Manzano.

As a result of those decisions, I freed up space for the following new varieties: (2) Apache, (2) NuMex Twilight, (1) Tasmanian Red #1, (2) Unknown [possible Chocolate Bhut Jolokia], (2) Unknown Large Yellow Pumpkin Habanero, (2) C.Frutescens Orange-Yellow Bird Pepper, and (2) Pimenta de Neyde.

So, I steam ahead, trying to juggle my pepper seedlings (insane amount of them!), tomato and eggplant sprouts, AND my new pepper plantees! All this, while working fulltime and raising my son, as well as keeping the house up. Lots of work to do, but I'd rather keep busy, since I have a tendency to procrastinate on things if I don't just go and remain active. Speaking of which, I have to go and exhume my soil from my square-foot garden boxes today, rake, clean up my trashy yard, and go for a walk. Man, it's going to be a busy day!

So, we're back to 73 seedlings from 74. However, I have inadvertently increased by total potential varieties to 48, up from 45! If any of these seeds don't sprout after a week or two, I'll stop trying, since it's getting a little late to plant more seeds. In any case, however, I am fully excited even with the staggering number I already have, I just got carried away because of the sheer number of varieties I have to choose from! I am developing quite a bond with my little kids, and I beam and feel a real connection to them as I see them grow.

This is a very spiritual experience to be able to aid them as they live out their life cycle, and I think keeping that kind of attitude is so important for their growth. Even as plants, they are still motivated by the same principles as myself, and we are bound to one another on a fundamental level. I have been trying to shift my moods and motivations from strictly selfish "OOH, I want peppers!" to "I would love a great and abundant harvest, but I really enjoy the whole process and watching the plants grow up is really special." Striving to maintain this general attitude in my mind will really inspire the plants to develop and really thrive.
