Hello everyone,

I guess I should probably introduce myself here... my name is Jeff Schickowski, I'm from Sheboygan, WI... and I Love Hot Foods!

I'm an amateur sauce maker but am at my best with dry rubs and seasoning blends. I make a GREAT jerk seasoning. I was invited to this forum by Tina from Pepper Masters after I wrote to her for help with my current project.

I'm in the process of compiling a database of sauce makers and their fiery concoctions and creating a hot sauce reviews site. I intend to make this a very complete site with top quality images of the sauce labels, a profile of the makers, as well as a list of ingredients for each sauce.

Visitors will have the opportunity to add their reviews to the sauces listed. This site is ad-free and no money will be made off of it. My policies will be to accept samples from sauce makers, but not solicit them as a prerequisite for inclusion of their sauces on my site. I will also treat feeebies the same as sauces which I have bought myself (and believe me, there are LOTS of those!)

Well that's me in a nutshell... Now I hope to find out more about all of you!

Your website project sounds a lot like ours...save for the fact that ours is in a blog format. Give our site a look:

It's great to give the sauces & saucemakers their props in the online world. It seems to go a longer way in the cyberworld than it does in print for certain audiences.

You going to have that at your chileheads online site or start a new one?
I've had the pleasure of meeting Jeff twice in Indiana, and he takes very good pictures of the chile plants, and his rubs are fantastic.
Nice to see you here, keep us informed on your sauce rating project.

Review site

I registered hotsaucereviews.com and that's where the new site will be. Once I saw that domain was available I jumped on it as the review site had been in the back of my mind for a while.
 
No snow here...

At least nothing that stayed on the ground. I haven't got much growing this year... too busy with other projects and such. Probably next year will be the year for a decent garden again.
 
Law agains't snow?

If there isn't one there ought to be! Anyone out there practice the long time chilehead's soil temp test before planting their peppers?

I've heard that if you can tolerate sitting bare-assed in the garden, your peppers will tolerate it too!

Now don't anyone ask for pictures... I don't actually follow the tradition, but I could just imagine a gallery of everyone out doing soil temp testing ;)
 
lol, I can only imagine...

We're not planting direct into the ground, too iffy, way up here in the nether regions. We're going from seedling to black pot.

Does that mean I should have the boys test the soil temp by first sitting on the pot???

Not only is there no law against snow in May, I frequently ski in May at Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt Washington. Very nice skiing in a t-shirt.

I skied April 15 and 16 in NH and it was 70F one day and 75F the next.

I never try to raise chiles in the snow......
 
Hey Willard, I've got to agree with you there. Nothing like spring skiing. Although, I don't recall ever having the opportunity to ski Mount Washington, I am a little surprised to hear that they're still skiing this time of the year. Isn't that in the Catskills?

So, anyway, let me rephrase... their oughta be a law against snow anywhere except on the ski hills in May!

Another new chili-head

Hey everyone,
I live in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada. Much like a lot of others here, I too am a amateur hot sauce maker. I've been making it for about ten years now and I get a lot of "why don't you sell it" comments. My sauce is hot, but it's not over the top hot. I've tried a lot of the big names and there's just no flavor. I focus on heat with flavor. Heat is easy and I believe flavor is more important. I'm slowly getting my hobby off the ground. I've done some research into suppliers, distributors and marketing. I have a lot of great connections/friends that are helping me a long the way so it's been fun so far. I am having trouble finding 5oz bottles in this area. Either I have to order a skid of bottles or I have to drive an hour and a half one way to pick them up. Does any one know of a bottle distributor that will ship cases and not just skids? (At a reasonable price of course).
Hope to hear from someone and I look forward to exchanging hot stories with everyone.
 
JDK, call me, (450) 451-6770 we'll see if I can't help you out with your bottles. I personally don't know anyone who will sell less than a skid, but if you don't mind a road trip, trade a bottle or two, I can get some bottles for you.
