Hi Folks,
So my company has a hot sauce comp next week for 'Run for the Cure.'
Now, i collect hot sauces and extracts. I generally don't eat the hot sauces in large amts straight. Mix them into stir frys, etc instead. But I can take small amounts directly without real issue (i'm talking of sauces such as Black Mamba, Nothing Beyond, Mongoose, etc). They are hot, but tongue/throat/stomach has no issues with them. I've also eaten many types of peppers straight, without much issue but generally i don't eat large the hotter types other than maybe a bit or 2. (granted, i don't actually have access to most of the hottest types...just some dried Naga Jolokia peppers at home)
Now, for the contest, yesterday they emailed us telling us what the weakest and strongest rating sauces are.
The contest starts at 250000 and goes up to 7.1 million (The Source). Rule is to drip a pretzel stick 1 cm in and eat it.
I have the Source @ home. So, for first time, cracked it open, and dipped a pretzel 1 cm in..and ate it. It was super hot BUT wife was shocked, that i didn't have much reaction to it. It was managable. had a bit of sweat, not much though. Eyes watered for a moment...but again, a couple blinks and it was fine. After 10 min, decided to start getting it to subside. Started having tons of milk and yogurt (sadly, all we had is fat free milk).
Now..after 55 min, the last sensations on the tongue disappeared. BUt, after 1.5 hours, stomach felt a bit strange. Now, i had eaten dinner before this. ANd had tons of milk after. 15 min of this upset stomach, so i decided to have a bit of pepto. BAD IDEA. Immediately threw it up (the pepto). Stomach then started to literraly expand (it felt hard and you could see that it was out farther than normal!) and it hurt like you can't imagine. Wife called ambulance. BUT, 15 minutes later, ambulance not here yet. Nothing. It stopped. Whatever reacted with the stuff in my stomach, ended...and all was well. We cancelled the ambulance, and all was well. Went back to watching TV.
One thing for sure, can see why Source is an additive and not an actual sauce. It is hot (although handled it better than most) but whatever it reacted with was not pretty.
So some questions at trying to prepare for next thursday's contest:
* i've heard today that milk is good for the mouth, but worse for the stomach. I've had small amts of milk whenever eating somethign that may be super hot. Since the upset stomach started before having pepto, we think it may be due to the milk??
* do not have pepto i guess is a rule?
* i heard bread and rice are good for the stomach but not the mouth (opposite of milk). People said eat tons of bread, before and within 20 min after.
* sugar is good since it binds to the same receptors more efficiently than capsaicin, and fat absorbs it.
Has anyone competed in a contest like this? What do people think?
Wife says just try to last up to level 5 or 6 but if they pull out extracts...give up. it's not worth any type of injury incase. She says most people there probably don't know what that stuff is...we do since we collect them.
(So far i've generated about 250 in sponsorship for charity so that is good)
Regards,
Sanjay
