For many seasons I had amazing success with Fertilome Ultimate Potting Mix; the nursery in my area stocked 3 cubic foot bags of it, and I always had an easy time getting plants to start in it and grow them to a healthy size before transplanting.
Well the nursery closed up shop this year, so I was left with buying either big box store potting mixes (blegh) or mixing my own. For seed starters I tried crafting a soiless mix of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. However I noticed that the mixture dried up incredibly quickly and was naturally hydrophobic (duh). So I got a container of quality compost to mix into the mixture so it would retain some moisture with more organic matter, however I am finding that even with the extra compost it still dries out fairly quickly.
What can I do to "fix" this stuff? What do you use? My ratios are 7 parts peat moss, 2 parts perlite, and 1 part vermiculite. Hard to say for sure how many parts of compost were used cuz I made a big tub of the other stuff and then added about a cubic foot of compost to it.
