First time chilli grower. Coco, soil and hydro. ๐Ÿค™

So, I've got a bit of experience growing some other stuff in coco/hydro. I've never been able to grow in soil though. :( it seems like chilli's will be no different but im gonna try anyway.

I've got a bunch of seeds from Devon chilli farm. Red Thai, Mini Meanie (jabanero) and Carolina Reapers.
I've started like 40 or so and about 22 have come up so far.

I'll have some outdoors in soil, others in Coco with reserviors.
Some indoors in Coco and I haven't quite decided on what sort of hydro system I'm gonna use but I'm pretty handy with a Gt205 NFT reservoir so it'll probably be one of those.

Just got my first light for the hydro part today, its a 110w QB Led. The footprint isn't great but figured I'd do a scrogged out reaper. Rammed full of growth technology hydro nutes, calmag, scillica and a cheeky wee boost of brassinolide. Just to see what happens. ๐Ÿ˜

The rest will all just be normal plants, aiming for hot chilli's. I'll try for a rediculously large one aswell though. Might aswell seeing as im fairly sure I know how. (famous last words. ๐Ÿ˜‚)
Anyhoo. Wish me luck folks.
This is my grow so far. You should be able to tell the one tray that's got coco in it and is 4 weeks younger than the rest. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Aswell as keeping a wee journal, I'm gonna ask a bunch of dumb questions along the way. Especially about these soil ones...
I drenched the soil, then put the seeds in.
Got really slow germ rates because it was too cold. ๐Ÿคฆ

In 6 weeks though I've only given them 2 or 3 shots of 10ml water. And I'm pretty sure they're over watered. ๐Ÿ˜‚
Am I supposed to let soil dry properly out in between waterings? If so, how the f#ck do these things survive outside in Scotland? ๐Ÿคจ

The coco tray is now on half a litre a day. My hydro nutes haven't turned up yet so just a little clamag and a teeny sploosh of tomato nutes. My pen turned out to be broken after years of neglect but I'm fairly sure it's 50ppm of each. Tap water is 50ppm also so should be sweet. ๐Ÿค™

I'm excited to watch the grow.
Should be no problem learning new things growing
Chili Peppers, with friends in the community that can help and learn with you.
Thanks for sharing.

Make sure if you give them lots of water that it drains or drys up and doesn't stay soggy.
You can use wind or heat to help soil conditions.
I think baby seedlings shouldn't get too dry, because they will fall to the ground.

Do you have any way of rising the temperature for the trays with seeds? Maybe you can put some of it on the lights or somewhere where they can easily germinate in higher temperature (but you would have to watch the soil to not let it dry) and after that you could put it under the lights as normal...

If I'm right in thinking I can treat the coco/hydro ones like uhmmm 'tomato plants' ๐Ÿ˜‰ then I'll probably be able to do some teaching on that side.

This soil malarky has me absolutely stumped though. I just don't get it.
Put seed in. Wet it. Grow it. ๐Ÿคท
It's literally supposed to be that simple but I just can't do it. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I can grow in just water, just coco, just perlite, I can even grow in fresh air.
Growing in apparently the easiest and most natural way though, genuinely seems impossible to me.
I've tried and failed soo many times and tomato seeds ain't cheep. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
I've run out of chilli seeds now aswell so just gotta go with what I got. There's about 15 soil ones now so I'm sure at least a few will do something useful. ๐Ÿ˜

Hiya bud ๐Ÿค™ now that the light is up I can put them in propegators in the heated wardrobe. I'm out of seeds though. So just gonna wait till the outside ones are getting ready to go outside before I start any more.
My Mrs knows from experience what Im like when I get growing so she won't resist the expansion too much. I've gotta build up gradually though so that it's not so big of a step. And more of a "necessity." less than 2 months hopefully lol. ๐Ÿ˜

Ooh, just thought of my next dumb question aswell...
Anyone got a recommendation for seed starter soil? ๐Ÿ‘
Should've probably been one of the first things on my mind but my wee brain's gettin old these days. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sorry, I was asking that in regards to "low germination", I was coming back from work and couldn't see pictures properly. You have seedlings already and moving not germinated would mean moving germinated, and they need light, so, stupid question on my side then, sorry.

Well, I heard that it is good to let pepper plant cry for water a little to get better yield (plants tend to flower when they are scared future may be bad ;<) but having soil wet but not soaking works for me alright at this stage. It would be beneficial to give them some very weak watered up fertilizer, I like making hydro solution because it is perfect - not too strong and gives amazing result (and by weak I mean, nothing what they say on the bottle/bag, just few percent of it, so they were growing strong from the start - if it comes to hydro solution, the normal ratio is fine).

And, obviously, temperature.

I didn't have any problems with generic soil but I use hydro solution and seaweed fertilizer, so, there is no bad soil with that ;o
Labs (lactic acid bacteria) can also enhance your soil, making all the nutrients in it more available for roots and plant growing stonger and faster. And it is very easy to make cheap.

Sorry for chaotic and not so technical answer, I tend to go with that kind of spirit into gardening... Hope at least something helps!

Yeah I've tried most of the high and low stress training methods in coco. Most of the "myths" are very much correct with my usual grows. So I don't see why they wouldn't work for chillies. Things do grow much slower in soil though now that I think about it so that might play a part in things that I can't quite comprehend. ๐Ÿคจ
