Hybrid Mode 01 2015

Well my germination problems seem to have vanished. For my annuums, at least. Every day a couple more pots green up. I know I'll have plenty of chinenses to keep my sweating and panting, so I'm not all that bummed that I'm missing a few varieties from my original grow list. I'm pretty disappointed that I only got one wild to germinate but I'll try to sprout a few this summer. I would have been happier if all the pubes I planted had sprouted...
But I gotta say I can't tell you how psyched I am to be getting the germ rates on my annuums that I am. I don't think I've been this excited to see sprouts since I saw my first Reaper hook! I can't wait to see all these different full-grown plants and their pods this summer.
Here are some pics of the progress.

I took a close look at my 7 pot burgundy a while ago and was surprised to find a whole bunch of tiny pods ripening. One here looks almost ready to pick. My wife and I might have to whip up a couple of pizzas when the rest ripen up!

It's looking like next week might bring compost-turning weather. I'll get some pics and temp readings as I wake Gomer up out of his winter nap. I've been toying with some ideas on how to jumpstart a cold compost heap, so we'll see how that goes.
In the next week or two I'll be mixing soil for my containers (depending on weather and availability of ingredients). So expect all dirty pics of that, too.
Aaaaand I think I'll start some more seeds this weekend. Tomatoes, poppies, marigolds, maybe some lettuce and I think I'm going to experiment with starting a few okra plants indoors this year too. So stay tuned, spring is just around the corner!  Thanks for stopping in!

The weather as of late has got me thinking is might be time to get my 2015 gardening operation ready for high gear. I spread out my compost pile yesterday to allow the insides to warm up faster. If it looks good and thawed today or tomorrow, I'll heap it back up and maybe add some Tomato Tome. I'll start posting temps once Gomer starts waking up.
I decided to do some consolidation and cleaning house with my indoor (starts) grow today. I pitched all the pots that I had lost hope on. This made room for me to move one whole flat of annuum starts under my lights. The sunlight in my secondary growth table is good, but the plants do way better under my bank of T8s.

I gave them a little water and put a fan on them for a few hours today.
IMG_0247_zpsrsxlol69.jpg

I also started the majority of my tomatoes today. (Thanks fiogga!)

I'm going to germ them on the heat mat by the window. I have a good feeling I have a handle on all my germination issues I've seen this year. We'll see...

Here's a shot of my sunlit grow station. Tomatoes are front and center, just watered. Annuums that have yet to pop are on the right. The flat in the back middle has all my best chinensis specimens. Easter lilies and amaryllis are on the left.

One more panorama of my solar germ station. There's a LOT of green in that room. You can't see all my cacti, bromeliads and OWs in this shot.

That's all I got for right now. I'll be heading out in a minute to check the compost. I'll get some pics of it as well as the soil I have in my raised beds. I poked around in it after my wife and I got back from a walk yesterday and I couldn't believe how good it looked under the layer of compost I applied last fall. BLACK GOLD!!!

Awesome glog you got going on here nice list, operation and plants best of luck to your growing season looks like you got a great start!

Thanks! The start has had it's share of hiccups, but I'm used to that.  :D Now that temps are warming up and the plants are getting bigger, I see some smoother sailing on its way !    *knocks on wood

Here's Gomer. He's not thawed yet, so I turned him over to let him sun the other side.

Here's the soil that's living in my raised beds, under about 4" of last fall's compost. Not the best pic, but you can see that awesome texture.  :drooling: This soil is so loose, I can shove my hand in up to my wrist with little resistance.

Things are coming along fine en el jardin del dash-o dos. I had kind of a close call when my wife and I were away for about a week recently. A few pots got really dry and I lost some leaves. Whatever. They'll be tougher because of it.
I gave all of them a dose (a heaping half teaspoon) of kelp granules the other day along with a good soaking and boy are they thanking me. So far this batch of seedlings (those that made it, at least  ) are the best I've ever grown. This is the second dose of supplemental fertilizer (besides compost tea) that my chinenses have gotten and the first dose for the annuums. The soil I germinated in had a light charge of Tomato-Tone, bone meal and some other stuff and I'm just guessing that it's time to be adding additional nutrients.
Enough of the boring crap. Pics.

Could I get a bump?

Every thing is looking very nice, love the lil mini 7pot pods. I can't wait until it's time to plant out. I keep going out and poking at the beds and pulling the dandylions that are popping up. I tilled a while ago but will probably till again before plant out. Chero roxa is pretty. Love the roxa family foliage.

Thanks! I hear ya. I can't wait to see some green (besides the grass sprouting on the edges) in my beds.

Nice looking plant my man!  I just pulled out a bunch of pothos vine after retiring a fish tank.  It will be strung all over the windows soon.

Thank you. I always assumed that plant was some kind of philodendron. Learn something new… I picked that one up about four years ago. As soon as I got it home, I pruned it back to a half dozen or so vines to encourage them to grow longer. I love the look of a room with vines crawling all over the walls and ceiling.

just put a bunch in the greenhouse this morning , 80 in there and uv rays !        :onfire:

Today just seemed like the perfect day to work on hardening off the minions. 30mph wind, temps pushing 80F, dew point of 35F… They didn't stay out long but I think it was plenty of time to convince them to start toughening up.

These are all my peppers and tomatoes. (LOTs are in the round white containers.)
IMG_0262_zps5enatw6x.jpg

I decided it was also perfect weather to prep the beds, plant some shallots and onions and do some general cleaning up.

Each bed got about 2.5 lbs of TomatoTone, about a pound of bonemeal and about 120 more lbs of compost.
IMG_0263_zpsjvn2jfsi.jpg

These two also received 40lbs of biochar, each. I'm going to do a little nonscientific comparison for a friend of mine who recently started distributing the stuff. It sounds like a worthwhile amendment for certain soils (lacking organic matter). I'm just curious to see if there's any noticeable benefit when added to the already phenomenal, deep, black topsoil I'm fortunate enough to grow in. Stay tuned for season-long comparisons.
IMG_0264_zpslhu1hlfz.jpg

All amendments (besides compost) were spread evenly on the existing layer of compost (see post #64) which was applied last fall. I used a garden rake to mix it into the compost layer. I didn't bother to try to fork it in any deeper - I outsource that work to my loyal earthworm workers (they aerate the soil better than I could ever hope to anyway). The additional compost was simply spread evenly on top of the old layer.
I don't think I could have done this at a better time. The forecast is calling for thunderstorms tonight (wohoo! the season begins!) and it looks like we might end up with about a half inch of rain. Hopefully it's not much more than that. I'd like to give the amendments some time to get assimilated before heavy rain washes them out. Well see what happens.
As always, thanks for checking in, bruddas and sistahs. I hope everybody else who had awesome weather today had a chance to make use of it, too. Adios!

I decided it was about time to mix soil for this season's container grow. Here's what I slapped together:

(3) 2.8 ft3 bags of SunGrow Professional
(1) 1.5 ft3 bag of biochar
'bout 2/3 of a bag of worm castings
~40c. TomatoTone (some other brand)
~15c. bonemeal
2c. humic acid
2c. kelp granules
2 oz. epsom salt
One shovel
(disclaimer: This is not a recipe. These ratios just seemed "right". If something here ^ seems fucked up, please tell me.)
IMG_0262_zpsu9rk7rzk.jpg

All heaped up
IMG_0266_zpspx1e4szv.jpg

I mixed the mess up and broke up soil clumps. Then I watered it, mixed, watered, mixed etc Until It looked good. Then I shoveled it into garbage cans and recycling bins to cook for a few weeks.

Talk you you later everybody. I gots Puerto Rican beans to make!

Soil mix looks good. How many and what size containers are you using? I'm think I am going to try and mix my soil next week.

What type of wood is best to use to frame a raised bed, like the two you showed a few posts ago?

I'll be using a hodgepodge of containers this season. Lots of 5 gallon buckets, a bunch of 4.5 gallon plastic pots, and a few larger pots (7-15 gallons).
The best wood to use probably isn't the stuff pictured above. That was just the cheapest. I didn't want to use treated stuff for the garden and cedar was too expensive (we rent). I put it in in the spring of 2013 and they seem to be holding up fine, though.
As far as size goes, all beds are 4' x8' and made out of 2x8s  held in the ground with 24" 2x2 stakes.

These are some of my best looking plants. All the chinenses I potted up a month or so ago. The plants sure look small in that pic - those are 6" pots...

Some flower containers I put together to pretty the place up and attract some pollenators. (begonia, marigold, lantana and petunias)

Thanks! I'm going to take a look at the extended forecast this weekend. If night temps stay above the mid 50s I may get a few in. But I'm thinking most will go in the next weekend.
