soil I done goofed, soil needs more drainage.

Half my plants are in pots that have very dense, heavy soil that makes them grow badly. How do I add perlite to it without screwing up the roots too much?

Im unsure unless the rootball has not grew down yet.
What i have done flawlessly, fill kiddy pool or large container with water. Pull root ball from pot, submerge rootball in pool while holding the ball with hand/S. The bad soil will fall off rootball little by little.
The soil liquifies away from your roots.
Just take your time and TAKE YOUR TIME.

Transplant in desired soil.

A piece of ½" pipe to cut a few plugs down to the bottom of the pot. Fill the holes with perlite. That should get you through the season.
