I feel like crying!

This is bird guano. They might not be responsible for the damage and were feeding on the insect that  have done the damage. I've had similar damage due to red slugs that came from spain and are now nibbling everything around in large numbers. If birds did it, take the plants somewhere safe or protect them with net or mesh. 
 
Unless I'm missing something, it seems strange to me your plants have been munched on quite a bit, but there are no caterpillars still on or around the plants.  I found several of the bastards on my plants.  So this might support Tarzan's post that it's birds.  Bit of a mystery :)
