The peppers are kind of fussy about every damn thing.

Peppers whine and moan and poke along.

Yes!

I have grown many other things but I've only gone obssesive over chillies and the other day I figured out why. It's because I suck at it

If they were as easy to grow as tomatoes I would probably gotten bored with it. But since I've had so many problems and chilli plant failures I've devoted tons of time and effort to getting it right.

I suppose it'll make me a better gardener in the end.

You're spot on with that! My other veggies have greatly benefitted from the pesky peppers. While trying to "solve" pepper growing, the rest of the garden has improved a lot, mainly using better soil and irrigation practice.

It's interesting the different problems pepper growers around the world face. In this thread, I'm watching for the effects of Tom's cooler growing conditions, light schemes for the winter, and timing of seed starts to give a plant a headstart in our cold(er) north US climate. It will take a long time to find out what works, but I think waiting out the pepper bastids is the main way to defeat them--I mean grow them....
