It's never too early to get started!

Sooo... 2022 season is over and most of my 2023 plants are already there - no reason not to start a new thread already! 😃

While all my current plants are technically overwinterers, only a couple have grown through the 2022 season and are considered interesting enough to keep for next seasons grow.

Let's start with the famous Schneider farms SB plant, which will be going into it's third season in 2023. It currently doesn't look all that nice but that was also the case during the winter of 2021 so no worries here...

Actually I don't give them anything right now! The young plants are placed on top of the fridge, just below the roof of the veranda so they only get a somewhat dimmed winter daylight. Temperature is also quite low, currently between about 12°C/53°F at night and 18°C/64°F during the day.

The overwinterers are near a south facing window in the same room but because they stand on the floor, they have to do with even less warmth...

Made a hard decision today.

God rid of the overwinterers. Turns out they are all dying off. A couple of weeks ago we had a cold spell with freezing temperatures even during day time. Now the plants are all inside of course but the overwinterers were placed near the door to the back yard that is sometimes opened to let some fresh air into the house. The cold air must have hit the plants in a bad way. Also they stand on the floor in this room that has very little heating. Must have been too cold for the roots... Oh well... plants gone... room for other plants!

But that's not all... I already had a couple of aphid infestations on my young plants in the past couple of months. Tried to get rid of them with neem oil and seemed to be successful after the second time but this morning I checked again only to find a really serious infestation again 🙄. Where do they keep coming from? 🤔

I decided to stop the entire winter grow. Sad, but now I have the opportunity to reconsider my entire grow for 2023. I might even take the wishes of my wife into consideration, like low heat annuums, e.g. poblano... 😁
Yeah... mixed feelings about this... the young plants were all beautiful specimen but I don't want to keep fighting aphids for months to come...
As for the overwinterers... I feel most sorry about the scotch brains plant and exactly that one was in the worst condition. At some point they suddenly started to lose all of their leaves and then the branches started to die back. So I decided to no longer put energy in them.
Took a step back on my decision. Instead of killing the young plants because of the aphids, I cut them back and removed all leaves. I hope that's enough to get rid of those aphids. But I'll probably have to keep an eye out for them...


About the overwinterers... the scotch brains and HSH scotch bonnet are toast as expected but the old schneider farms SB is still doing OK...

Took a step back on my decision. Instead of killing the young plants because of the aphids, I cut them back and removed all leaves. I hope that's enough to get rid of those aphids. But I'll probably have to keep an eye out for them...
You've got nothing to lose by cutting them back hard and everything to gain, hopefully.
I chopped mine back hard, stuffed them in the greenhouse, if they survive, good - if they don't tant pis
I bet those plants will be looking great in a couple of weeks! They have plenty of fresh soil and nutrients available by the looks of it, just keep them warm and light enough and they will do fine for sure.
Keep the aphid guard up though...:flamethrower:
Don't they sell pyrethrum based sprays in Belgium? This always has done the trick for me and is fairly innocent.
You could also make some tobacco tea, that kills almost everything! :D
Yes I used pyrethrum spray a couple of times already and then I'm safe for a couple of weeks but somehow they always come back... 🤔

I'm just a little afraid now that I will face the same problems with the seedlings as I had at the beginning of the 2022 season. Time will tell...

Khang Starr Lemon Starrburst, Khang Starr Peach Starrkist and Khang Starr Scarlet Rose. They are 3 variants of the same cross (MOA scotch bonnet x bahamian goat) made by Khang Starr.. it's a very pretty pepper that is said to taste very good also.
