glog It's never too early to get started!

Sooo... 2022 season is over and most of my 2023 plants are already there - no reason not to start a new thread already! πŸ˜ƒ

See my previous glog... https://thehotpepper.com/threads/2022-too-early-to-get-started.75362/

While all my current plants are technically overwinterers, only a couple have grown through the 2022 season and are considered interesting enough to keep for next seasons grow.

Let's start with the famous Schneider farms SB plant, which will be going into it's third season in 2023. It currently doesn't look all that nice but that was also the case during the winter of 2021 so no worries here...

Next in row is my Scotch Brains plant...

And then there's the Humble Servants Homestead (HSH) SB, which was also elected to stay for next season...

Well... it's never too late to start setting pods... It looks like more pods are setting on the plants now... nothing worth posting pictures of as they are all still tiny and still might decide to drop from the plant. Main question is... isn't it a bit too late in the season already?

To keep myself a bit busy I have sown my remaining zapotec jalapeΓ±o seeds. The seeds are quite old already, so time for some fresh ones. If they do germinate, I'll keep them inside as a fall/winter grow. I'll post some pics when they start to germinate.

A couple of plant shots to fill up the emptiness of my glog...

They may not be producing a lot but growth is not bad. I moved a couple of plants to another spot to give the others some room...

The Schneider farms SB from Texas Hot Peppers on the left, Papa Dreadie on the right. Of all plants, the Papa Dreadie is the smallest in size but growth is very dense. It has one reasonably sized pod growing currently...

The yellow 7pot brainstrain in the center rear, Schneider farms SB from White Hot Peppers on the left, HSH scotchie center front and the WHP II scotch bonnet on the right. The picture does not do the size of the plants justice, but that 7pot must be about the largest chinense plant I have grown so far...

Great pics @MarcV . The plants look very good, strong stalks & stems with good leaf color.

Looks good to me, August and September are still good months for producing peppers
I totally agree with @ahayastani I get cold sweats in February about BS like. Did I get the seeds started soon enough? Are they going to germinate soon? Day 5 now LOL. πŸ˜„ Which one do I cut? 😲 You get the picture, Just take a deep breath sit back & enjoy the girls growing stronger everyday.

Darn those Hogwarts pack a real punch! I had a small, ripe pod on the plant yesterday, about 1cm large. I ate most of it... it really set me on fire with a serious, sharp tonge burn that lasted quite long. Didn't expect that from such a small pod. I had some family members visiting. They too wanted to taste it. They already freaked out when just touching a sliver of the pepper with their tongue! 😁. I don't understand that just a slight touch can give an immediate strong burning sensation... πŸ€”

I wonder if they are not just a mislabeled scorpion pepper...

The now almost ripe larger one... not for eating fresh from the plant if you ask me...

Most young peppers look like this...

So... what's the verdict?

Well... everything stays about the way it was... the schneider farms remains my favorite scotch bonnet. And the papa dreadie and HSH keep their high places also.

The worst of the bunch - to me - was the allen boatman. This pod was very hot compared to the others but was also very floral.

The jamaican TFM from semillas reminded me of the Trenton Farmers Market SB that I grew a couple of seasons back, even though Semillas claims that their "TFM" stands for True Form. Both have this sourness that I don't find in other SB varieties. Can't be a coincidense...πŸ€”

I often read that Foodarama and Beth Boyd are the same varieties. Not sure if that is true myself... at first there is the pod size, which is remarkable larger on the foodarama plant. Then there is taste... floral/bitter on the foodarama plant but sweet on the beth boyd...

Of course there may be a difference between individual plants of the same variety. Even different pods of the same plant can differ in shape/size/shape/heal level. My current experience may not be representative.

I didn't mention the bahamian goat yet. It had a surprisingly good taste, very sweet, not comparable to any of the scotch bonnets. How can it be claimed to be the same as the freeport orange SB? I grew that several seasons ago and disliked it very much. Also, the white lining on the inside is not something I saw on the freeport.

Hey @MarcV , I just saw this post, and wanted to share a few things about some points on here!

I was the person who collected the original Scotch Bonnet, TFM, and yes I collected it from Trenton Farmer's Market back in 2004. Around that time, Allen Boatman and I were part of the C2CPC and among all of us there was a lot of talk about morphology, especially since there was a good amount of focus on Caribbean peppers being scotch bonnet types versus a true heirloom yellow Jamaican Scotch Bonnet. In those discussions, there was frequent reference to 'true form' morphology versus the other lantern-shaped fruit. Allen's pepper that was going around at the time was called the TJSB ('True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet') and was a little more flying-saucer shaped, but still had that tam-'o-shanter look to it. I don't remember his source.

I labeled the Trenton Farmer's Market the Scotch Bonnet TFM and circulated it, there was a lot of favorable feedback and it ended up spreading around. After about 2008, I ended up playing whack-a-mole a bit with distributors outside of the immediate C2C community to try to keep the TFM acronym as Trenton Farm Market, not "trueform" which kept happening, but alas, Semillas La Palma got in on it too! If you have a type called Scotch Bonnet, TFM, unless someone took the liberty of labeling a trueform scotch bonnet as TFM and selling it (which frustratingly seems to happen a lot), it's probably the Trenton Farmer's Market one.

I knew Beth and remember when she collected the Foodarama bonnet (probably some time around 2004/2005, if my memory serves me right), she was very excited about it. She was also part of the C2CPC and we were sharing bonnet types back and forth, so I have no idea if Foodarama and Beth Boyd are the same type or not.

Looks like I have to check out the Papa Dreadie sometime, I've never had it before!
