JJJ Glog 2014.....in summary

Washing the 10x20s for a New Year.
 

 
 
By last October I was so peppered out  -40 some superhot plants and over twice that many mild and sweets. Didn't think I'd ever see the end of it. But, an early surprise freeze caught me off guard and I lost several mild and sweeties. I did get almost the entire superhot crop, dried, smoked, fermented, frozen or pickled. so I should have no dearth of heat to see me through to 2014 harvest.
 
I owe most of my pepper success in 2013 to YOU.
All the folks here at THP helped me from seed, to advice, to encouragement, to inspiration.  Couldn't have done it without y'all.
 
Some changes for 2014:
 

 
I'm moving my Cappy 1000 Pepper Incubator into my  basement utility room. Last year I had it in a minimally heated out building and the night times often dipped into the 50s or lower. And come to find out, baby peppers don't much care for that. They survived, they were just slow growers.
 
 
Dirt:
 
Fox Farms Ocean Forest will be my potting mix. It's organic and hopefully will be as good as the Miracle Grow Moisture Control and it can't be any worse than my home-brew last year which wasn't horrible but coulda been better.
 
Timing:
 
Instead of putting most of my seed in the ground in early February, I'm going to hold off until later on the Annums. The Chinensis at least some in early - mid January and some Manzano seeds earlier than that if I can find them. :rolleyes:
 
How Many for Plant Out?:
 
Not 140.
I'm devoting 2 raised beds -a 4x30 and a 4x16 to Sweet Peppers -Jimmy Nardello, King of the North, Gaint Marconis, Aji Dulce. About 26 plants. 
100' in my row garden. Probably 40 plant's. Haven't decided on the balance, Bhuts, 7 pot, Habs, Bonnets, Jalas, the usual suspects and a few odd balls.
66 plants +/- total. I totally neglected my maters last year(which given the season didn't make much difference), but this year I vow to do better by tomatoes. I hope to do 50 or so -all heirlooms, mostly paste.
I'll start several more of both than needed for selling and give-aways.
 
 
 
In related news....
 
My buddy up in Richmond grew a lot of peppers last year. He has a geodesic dome greenhouse. At the end of season he just dug up several of his pepper plants and moved them in inside.
 

 
They're looking pretty good for late December.
 
My last "harvest" of 2013 was 12/22/13; some Thai Chilis that I'd pulled the whole plants in October and just laid up on a table outside. Most had dried leather-hard.
 
I pulled, cooked, seasoned, ground and strained them into a sauce for Pad Thai for this winter.

I would  love dearly to get the rest of my goodies in the ground.
We have some lows in the low 40s end of next week, and while probably won't mess with the peppers,
I'm holding back on the eggplants and gourds until the following week.
 
We got some rain Saturday. Enough to keep things going. More is on the way before it cools down a few days for Blackberry Winter, I guess.
I don't go to garden on the weekends in general, but that could change later in the season.
 
Couldn't do much Saturday morning outside for the off and on rain.
So I blanched some heading  mustard and froze it.

Tastes about the same as Gai Choi, which doesn't  head-up, and I've been pulling leaves on it for a while.
 
Later I did get out and loaded up some roadside RCW
for the JA pepper row mulch in particular.

That's about my third or fourth load since last winter. Looks like there's only about one more good load left. Then I'll look for another.
Also scored a 5gal bucket from our pizza parlor for a SIP bucket and some willow switches along the road to make some rooting hormone tea.
I've never tried it but it looks easy.
 
Today, hiked with MrsJ back up in the woods a little beyond where we went last week.

I got a few handfuls of some nice humus (hemlock, rododendron, moss) from around the  karst out-croppings
as a treat to top-dress my planter manzanos.

And driving back, I found a thick patch of nettles and harvested a handful.

Anybody know any good nettle recipes for plants?
 
Maybe a good Nettle-Comfrey-Alfalfa smoothie?

Carl, you ever pickle mustard green?  taste great with fatty food (pork belly or pork shoulder)
 
No I haven't. but I just heard about this recently. I've got a LOT more mustard to pick so I may give a whirl.
We pickled our extra asparagus, very yum.
 
Got my Big Bad Bhut Bed filled.

A ton of work went into prep and should make the plants happy all season.
 
I amend my plants with an organic liquid that's 6-12-6 and do it in half doses. Hopefully after this season things will even out. I made a ton of changes last winter.

I water them, and just after this a brief, unexpected rain brought a little relief.
 
I caught just enough in storage to give the raised beds, especially the onions a much needed drink.
Plus I hand watered all the sweet peppers in the beds.

Good news is high rain probability from midnight to late afternoon being pushed in by Blackberry Winter.
 
Forecast is 5 days of 60s high and 40s low. Rather not see 40s at this point, but I'm watching the forecast change trend closely to see which-a-way things may be headed.

Blanched and froze most of it, but on Charles suggestion, I pickled 3 quarts.
 
I'm starting to take a shine to these butterhead lettuces over the Black-seeded Simpson I'd always grown.

I've got both peach scorpion and a peach bhut that I think is going to turn out nice... I may just cross them so I can stop having to differentiate them...
 Actually I thought this was the de facto Peach Bhut, but I found out differently.  This is the only peach anything I have planted except some trees.

I used to grow the Butterhead lettuce here, but the Romaine just does better all around.
 
Those MoA's will come around, this is a tough time for then sorting out their new home and all.

Man you must be pushin' a record in  the 40s in S TX, in MID-May. Our records are just above freeze so I feel safe  :liar: .
 
I've got a pair of Red Romaines going from a free pack of seeds. Wasn't gonna show because it looks so droopy.

Yeah, MoAs looked much better, not stellar but better, this afternoon.
 
It's almost 8pm here and I can already feel a chill on the wind that's been missing for a week or so.
 
Went from April to July in a week.

Well, the soaking wet conditions here from two days of rain and storms isn't any better than either of you two. Maybe if we could just average it all out everyone would be happy. :rolleyes:

Hey Trip J, I see we have similar weather issues. Yeah; 40's at night (from 70's at night?) don't worry me none either :liar: :liar: . Like the greens shots; I've sorta seen that pepper "look." For days.
 
Everything I've kept on life-support has looked pitiful until gave a sip. Nice to think that "stressing" peppers makes them hotter :rolleyes: . Really? :rofl:
 
And Scotty, y'all got crazy temps at night too?! Jazuz.
 
Hey, Trip J, we got savvy Ag Ext: they said, "Well, for maters, get ya some Spectracide Immunox. Them that used it last year had some maters." So I did. I also bought some copper as these is fungal conditions. Plants will be looking good; mine drooped so badly, really sad. I think they're overwhelming on night lows. :pray: Around Monday starting rounds of compost tea.

Yeah we got rain. About an inch at my house but only about 1/4-1/2" at the pepper patch.
Still good enough to catch 1100 gal. and we've had more since I measured. So plants are less stressed and me too :)
I've got a scheme on catching more water  from my down spouts without having to buy more pipe, but I'll have to wait for it to dry up a bit to dig into it.

Especially the ones I didn't transplant from 3.5 up to 5" pots  which stayed smaller.
Perhaps the rootbinding/stress triggered early bud production and it will never max-out in a vegetative way.
We shall see.

Very nice JJJ! Things are moving along nicely!
 
We pick the Romaine when it's 14"s and nice and bushy, we've been growing the straight up green variety.
 
We did set 2 records, a low record for the high of the day Tuesday 63°, and were supposed to set a night time low this morning. No bother it's 80° out there right now ;)
 
But the wind was crazy for 48 hours.
