Just purchased a Bromeliad

It looks pretty neat. If you like plants like that, ginger plants (ornamental types) might also be nice. For example the hedychium gardnerianum..

Will the one you bought also produce a fruit (i.e. like a pineapple?)

No, Bromeliad's only flower. I have Orchids as well and would love many more but I don't have a room with enough light for more.

Ok, then these are just ornamental. The pineapple (ananas comosus) is actually a bromeliad as well, so I was kinda hoping it would have some kind of weird fruit (I love to explore new foods).

yes, pineapples are in the bromeliad family.  I have one of them that I have been growing for 2 years that is fruiting now in a one gallon pot, haha.  They are very cool and fun to grow.  I also grow some of the ornamental gingers (Hedychium) and they are spectacular as well with showy and fragrant flowers.  I also have a couple avacado plants and I also have a couple coffee plants as well.  maybe one day in a few years they will make some beans and I can roast my own home grown coffee.

Bromeliads are beautiful, I grew one several years ago but it wasn't nearly as handsome as that one.  We have a giant pineapple upstairs that's a few years old that hasn't flowered yet but soon, fingers crossed.  What species is that one?

Good luck with that one. A blooming pineaple looks extremely nice. Unfortunately my climate isn't up for it.. and I can sacrefice the space needed to overwinter my peppers.

This is an Aechmea Bromeliad (pronounced EEK-me-uh) called, "Del Mar" from Kent's Bromeliads in Vista, CA.
He is the largest grower of these plants in the nation his literature says with a 30 acre nursery with more than 100 varieties of Bromeliads.
He holds patents to 25 hybrids as well. Would love to visit that place!
Here's the link to their page with this cultivar on it. http://www.kentsbromeliad.com/catalog/aechmeas
