Karl's (Hendrix1326) Post-Apocalyptic 2013 Glog!

Greetings, all! I'm sure there are a ton of new faces here on THP, as par for the course when I don't make many appearances for extended periods of time! Anyway, I wanted to get the foot back in the door with my 2013 Glog! I took a short break headed through the late autumn into the winter now, but a chilehead's work is never done once truly dedicated!

I've been piecing together my supplies for awhile now, and reinvested in some new Mylar emergency blankets to hang up in the corner of my laundry room, just like I did last year. This year, however, I have been using sticky Velcro strips to the walls and blankets for easy removal and reapplcation in years to come. So far, it's been wonderful.

I also recently went browsing on Amazon for my Botanicare plant foods, and will be adding Hydroplex food to the mix this year. First up, however, is ProGrow for the seedlings once they begin. I've been feeding my overwinters some Liquid Karma that I had left from last year, just to give them a little boost headed into springtime.

In addition to Hydroplex, I will be using a few other supplements to reinvigorate last year's "Mel's Mix", which I got from the Square Foot Gardening book, and it is an amazing mixture! I invested in some bone and blood meal, and some Tomato Tone. I also will be starting compost tea this year. I am beginning by purchasing some pre-blended tea bags, and then a book to familiarize myself with all facets, with the intent on fully implementing my own blends starting next year.

I also plan on mixing in some real-live compost to the soil, as well, just to give it a nice hearty boost. With this, however, I have to keep in mind that I will be mixing in other amendments, as well, and will be decreasing the amount of plant foods I feed the plants as the season progresses. All in all, I expect it to be a wonderful learning experience as I try out some new stuff, and build off what I did this past year. It should be quite fun, and of course, the peppers I harvest will be the ultimate fruits of my labors, to say the least!

Just earlier today I finished reconstructing my growing room, with all (3) bar light fixtures hanging from chains/pulleys just like last year. This method works so well, and was pretty cheap to assemble. I also set up shop with a small table and got my heating mat ready for germination time! I planted my seeds this afternoon, and can't wait to see some sprouts soon!

Here is my 2012 carry-overs:

1 - Pero Orange Sweet

They are White Bird Of Paradise, and Blue Love In A Mist. Both look like really cool, pretty flowers, and I can't wait to see how they grow!

Pictures will be posted within the next few days, and for my YouTube followers, I will also begin my grow log update videos soon, as well. However, I may end up doing a video every 2 weeks instead of every week.

Well, that's all for now. Thanks for ducking in, and stay tuned for pictures and more frequent updates to come!

Nice variety selection happy growing :halo:

Thank you!

I'm curious about CGN 22184, what's that supposed to be like?

I actually have tried them before, and that's where I got the seeds from. They're kind of apple-like taste, decent warmth (I'd say Serrano level, give or take), and nice, crisp texture. Little jellybean, peach-colored pods. Really cool looking, and I'm looking forward to them this year. I had 3 plants last year that were paler green the entire growth time, and when I tried to transition them outside, all 3 plants slowly withered and died after I thought they had transitioned. They'd been outside for 2-3 weeks in partial sun, which I gradually stepped up. No dice, though :(

Great to see some germination going on. Love the list.

Thank you, I'm excited about the sprouts!

rock n roll Buddy!

should start my glog soon ... for now everyhting is in jiffy's so will have to wait 1 week or 2 to see plants growing!!!

list to come ;)

Yeah! Can't wait to see what you have going this year, you had a great rig and selection in 2012. Both the ones from you I got growing are already 2 inches tall with the first true leaves coming in, as well! Also, on an interesting note, the Ring Of Fire Cayenne has some root hairs emerging from the stalk, abov, the soil!!! Talk about cool, should be a hearty plant as it matures.

I'll try to get those Aji Cristal seeds sent out tomorrow for you :D

On an update note, I've had a few more sprouts since my last post! Chocolate Bhut and Yellow Fatali are roarin' through the gates, and even my 7-Pot NeBru is peeking out finally! That leaves only the Douglah for Chinense peppers, hope it emerges soon!

I also have to replant my Golden Cayenne, since I removed the moldy seed remnant yesterday :(

Come on, guys, let's get sprouted!

when you write 1-21 is that you have planted 21 seeds? and one is growing as we read that?

Rock on buddy!

Nope, that's the date that I first noticed the sprout. I'm only doing one of each of these this year, had too many to handle last year, and space was a concern, so I cut back to 32 total varieties (9 overwinters, 23 new grows).

All right, after a few days absence, I have some new photos to share of my little babies! Here goes (still haven't found a way to transfer the image directly :( ):

nioce glog buddy!

to post a picture it's easy. put your picture on a site like photo bucket

then when you write a message here click on the "IMAGE" or PICTURE" button in the toolbar (under the smiley sign) and go to photo bucket to copy the photo bucket link just at the right side of you picture (DIRECT LINK) and paste that link in the image popup window

should work fine....

Okay, so after not posting anything for 2 months now (day-umm!!!), here are all the back-logged updates:

#4:

#5:

I will be filming one (belatedly...) tonight, and will post soon. It will take me awhile to get back into the swing of things here on THP, it feels so far away at the moment. I have been doing album reviews on my YouTube channel as of late, which has taken up a bit of my time, and for awhile, I wasn't feeling the pepper vibe as strongly this year as the past 2 years, but it's picking up again, and I will try to integrate myself back here on the boards a bit more! In addition to those things, I have also been composing a paper on higher dimensions/harmonics/abstract philosophy, so my free time is also eaten up by that. Video games have also crept back into my life a little more as of late, so all in all, I have enough escape hatches to occupy my thoughts from the tribulation in my life, that's for sure!

Anyway, I hope to do some catching up on Glogs, and make some more posts, etc. throughout the summer!

I've watched some of your Iron Maiden videos Karl and am impressed by the depth of information you bring. That must be a lot of research and thought that goes into those. I'm not really a heavy metal fan, but which almost makes it more interesting to see in a way, because it was unexpected to see the musical analysis. Anyway, good to see you back posting!

Completely and totally enjoyed the vids as usual. plants looking great I look forward to your pod porn and pod reviews... Carry on!!!!

Bump, so you can make it show the vid instead of the link!

Thanks, Brian! I will put the 2 newest videos up at the end of this post!

Much appreciation for the kind words, Andy. Yes, I did quite a bit of foundation-laying beforehand for the album reviews. I spent the better part of 5 months critiquing the albums to make sure no 2 songs across their entire catalogue got the same exact rating, and it was a laborious process. However, it allowed me to really understand how to appreciate the nuances and differences that each track brings to the table, as well as to recognize the more esoteric or spiritual values that each song either has, or lacks in some subtle ways. Very cool process, if not a bit time-consuming!

I hope to be posting regularly this spring/summer, but we'll see how that goes, since I will still be doing reviews, too! I have your glog pulled up right now and am making my way through from the beginning. Got a few more to catch up on, too, but yours was first up on the list! Take it easy!

Thank you, Pia. I had a rough few months, and wasn't feeling it, but now that I'm back, things are looking up, and the plants are loving the vibes, too! I can't get them to stop flowering, and spend a few minutes each day picking buds off before they start flowering. Especially my Golden Cayenne, Purple Jalapeno, Ring Of Fire Cayenne, and Poblano are really throwing them out! Oh yeah, reviews are forthcoming! I have about 20 backlogged pepper reviews to upload, plus I plan on getting through some of the 35 bottles or so of hot sauce that I have unopened on my shelf! It will be a busy year, even with only 30 or so plants!

Okay, here goes with my 2 newest update videos:

Enjoy!

Hey, everyone! In my attempt to reintegrate onto the boards, here is a new update, as promised, though this time, I took some photos for the first time in months, yay! Here is how my grow room looks as of last night. I potted up all of my bigger seedlings from the Solo cups into small pots, and they are looking mighty fine! I also finally uprooted the last of my plants that were just put into the basement over the winter. I was surprised to find that the rootballs on them were still solid right to the bottom, and the soil was still damp, too!

So, that being said, I decided to dust them off, trim the roots a pinch, and repot them in the hopes that I get some revival out of these ones. If not, oh well. I also reinvigorated the soil for my Yellow-Orange Bird Pepper with some bone & blood meals, as well as some Tomato Tone. I will also be using compost tea this year for the first time, instead of as much Botanicare products, though they did work great. I still have the ProGrow Soil formula for when they are smaller, as well as Cal-Mag, but whether I need any others is up in the air, given the other supplements I am using instead.

I don't think I will end up with anything else for nutes this year, just need to give them some TLC and they'll do the rest! Now, on with the gallery:

Overwintered Yellow-Orange Bird Pepper (I topped this one and it got a lot bushier, I highly recommend this technique to increase sturdiness of the plant, as well as increasing the yield!):

Enjoy, and I will be uploading a new video soon, as well, with the new layout, I couldn't resist filming this week instead of next week!

looks really good Karl.

Thanks! I am really busy these days, but I've been trying to keep them happy until I can plant out. My neighbor will be helping me reconstruct my garden fence in the front yard within the next couple of weeks, hopefully :P

In any case, I will also be visiting my favorite local nursery on Tuesday, I just can't resist checking out the seedlings they have available! I had some awesome Orange Habanero seedlings from them last year, and they produced probably a pound or so each plant! I hope they do Padron peppers again this year, 'cause I have a hankering for them, but I didn't end up planting any from seed this year.

I'll be checking out your progress this year, now that I know you have a YouTube channel! Take it easy!

Hendrix good progress there you have with your chillies babies!  Thanks for remembering me for the Biquinho Yellow and sorry that you not having easy growth with this.  Not so active as a bit shy but my husband & I have a good laugh to hear 'me' mentioned on your youtube :surprised:  :surprised:
Goodluck with this yellow Biquinho
