kgetpeppers 2014 GL: 10/15. Late harvests

Last season was full of disappointment but a strong learning experience. Ebay had gotten me enticed by WORLDS HOTTEST PEPPER SEEEDS. Those bell peppers I received were not hot at all :P. I did however grow some very delicious cayenne pepper plants that turned out well as well as some tomatoes. On to new beginnings I invested in a 4 bulb t5 HO system and did lots of research and buying and trading seeds here on THP. The rest is history. The knowledge this community has given me is a great and I can only learn more with experience.

I started this season with 40 varieties in mind: My final grow list includes: Thanks to all who sold and or traded with me

I was planning on Growing a few more but germination did not occur
bahamian goat-
brazilian starfish-really bummed on this one :(
pepper joes carolina reaper- not so bummed on this one :)

Germination started a little late about mid march I started all the seeds after a soak in some tea and warm water in some seed starting medium in small paper cells that come rows of 5. These were the worst starting pots I have ever used. They did not allow for almost any root development and water absorption and basically put me a month behind schedule. I planted a second wave of the ones I really wanted like BBG7, Brown M etc in solo cups and they exploded with growth faster that the ones a month old. I quickly repotted them into 3.5 inch pots and after initial shock they began to grow.

I grew in my garage which wasn't kept too warm it was around 67 degrees and fluctuated because we had a really bad winter and spring here in illinois. Lights were on a timer 18-6 after 24 hours for first few weeks. A fan blew for 2 hours twice a day on a timer.

Pictures will be up asap!

Thanks for joining me!

SO, I walk out today after we had 7 days of rain, and all my plants look ok except one which just suddenly started to wilt, the soil was still moist so im thinking 7 days of constant moisture must be the problem. I hope it is.

All other plants are looking sweet and one of the teardrop habs is putting out like 5-6 buds per node wooohoo. Hope they stay. One plant is showing signs of fert burn which is my mistake I added a little bit to some compost tea and poared a bit too much in. otherwise all looks good. I am going on vacation next week for about 5 days so i hope it rains here least one day, I definately will give them a good soaking before i leave tho.

What do you guys think, can 7 days of rain cause a plant to wilt like it was dry as a desert. ?

Everything looks great!

Sorry I can't answer the rain question, haven't seen 7 days of rain in 15 years or so.

Keep doing what you're doing!

Wow, you've got a great grow going on over there.  As like you, I had made some poor decisions when it came to products to use for seed germination.  You've got a month on me.

Nonetheless, can't wait to see some pod porn.

After the fourth of july week ( GO MERICA) I should have some pods coming :) also might have some jalepenos to eat!!! yay

here are some pics of my troubled few plants, 1 is i think overwatered from 7 days rain and the other 2 are fert burns i believe from accidental foliar feeding of strong nutes. :)

Let me know if you think its other troubles

The plants, are looking great besides the last pic post. The last time my plants looked like that they were indoors still. Job well down. The tomatoes are looking awesome too. Looks like fert burn. Not an expert though. They'll come back. Good luck.

Have a good week.

Chuck

Thanks chuck. Yeah this has been crazy weeks for rain. Strong storms again last night brought a ton of it. Even if poor little pequin dies I have back ups ;)

Well, another round of strong storms with 2-3cm hail and 60-80 mph gusts coming in a couple hours. Definitely dont need the rain as im already at overwater status, soil drains well but isnt miraculous. Hopefully will dry up after this round.  jeez. My poor pequin plant was coming around then it rained again so its doomed.

Have you considered throwing some PVC hoops up and poppin so e plastic on em so they don't get drown? I've had a super wet last couple weekends. But I was able to avoid my plants getting overwatered by covering em

7-7-14,

SO,

I came back from my vacation in Wisconsin. A fun filled week of fishing and boating etc. Didn't even water my plants before I left because rain was in forecast for 3 days, on top of the week prior with 7 days of rain. Needless to say its been very muggy and moist environment. I came back to my garden and now my fear is pretty sure that what I thought was fert burn is in fact Bacterial. Ill post more tomorrow but you can see from pictures above what it looks like. I do have a far bit of pods growing so ill take some pics of those too tomorrow :)

From the experts out there, Isolation really isnt an option as they are all in ground, but is there anything at all to do, Most of the plants except one are doing great and shooting out pods so I have small glimmer of hope. The above pictures in earlier posts are from the plant that got hit the hardest and showed first signs after 5 days of water.

Any help is appreciated :)

Thanks,
Kurt

Here is some pics to go with my update, First the bad! This is the bacterial spotting that has plagued my annums only at the moment and one bbg7 whych i stripped the leaves from,. "prays".

I pulled the plant that was the "main culprit" as it saddens me, but may be for the best.

IT just really sucks that it WONT STOP RAINING, like last three nights its rained for like 30 minutes and last night was like 2 hours. I looked and it rained 12 out of 20 days this past 3 weeks.... cmonn.

Anyways, here is some of the little spots of joy for me

This is suppose to be Brown Bhutlah SLP but as you can see it is a new pod and already has its color so it must be some other variety, not a total loss but still kinda dissapointing.
sorry for bad pics my camera is a p.s and the focus sucks.

Thats 10, thanks for looking and all feedback for problem solutions appreciated !!!

Forcast never helps me out, battling bacterial leaf spot and wilt because of all the rain we have had so far in "summer", now they forcast me tomorrow 2 inches of rain ..........

Making it harder and harder to manage the spread, the drainage is good but constant water from above is hard.

Doing bi- weekly AAct applications and weekly applications  of serenade. Might try copper if anyone thinks it might help. All the plant books say to use copper for this kinda thing.

Hey Kurt!

Sorry about too much rain, both you and Trent. I'm saddened that it's become an issue. We suffer from the opposite here. I can say this lose the mulch, as long as the rains continue it's not helping things. If it dries out re-add it.

As for the rest of the solution, I can't give a good answer. I fight drought conditions here.

Hope things straighten out for you!

Yeah that might be worth a try least around the area near plants. Thanks devv. And yes it is a struggle with the moisture and doin all I can to save my plants from dying off. The leaves on my aji plants are looking strangr in a different way but still alive. My one hab plant has about a hundred flowers on it and looks good. The white devils tongue plant that has had upper leaf curl since day one is thriving and putting some serious flowers out. If they set ill have some nodes with 10 peppers each haha.
Ill take some pics soon

Thanks for looking

Almost all the chinese have baby pods forming and once they grow a little this week I will have a photoshoot, All of the buds are very promising but only if i stay vigilant against the bacterial issues that weeks of rainy weather brought upon my poor plants. Im sad that I lost my pequin and 2 cumari plants to this plague. The nearby plants are looking pretty bare now because I took no chances. The chinese bed is pretty clean with the exception of one plant which I stripped of all signs. White devils tongue plant that has looked like crap has so many flowers and all seem to be producing pods. I have at least 10+ double pods on that plant as well which is strange. Its currently my baby as it has so many pods and buds its exciting. I have copper spray ready for reinforcement and now i will spray weekly for a couple weeks alternating with serenade and aact. I hope to get a control on it tho before class starts back up. Early blight on the tomatoes has diminished a tad and the romas are loaded up.

Hope all is well with everyone else.

Hopefully the weather will cut you some slack. I'm at the other end of the spectrum here, the heat has kicked in and I've decided to let the plants that have pods do their thing and pull the rest. Out of 100+ plants around 30-40 threw nice pods. The rest did nothing. I guess it's part of the game ;)

Update with some pod pics!!!

So, the battle with bacterial leaf spot is tough and it has taken out 4 of the bushy type plants. Texas pequin, aji charapita, and cumari do para. Definitely a blow and saddens me. those three seemed to get hit the hardest by the massive rains more so because they were lower to the ground and bushier. On a brighter note, not many leaves on my full chinese bed are showing signs and if they do i pick asap. Im hoping my remaining anuums will survive like my jalepenos and sweet peppers but only time will tell. I did however have bunches of flowers forming and superhots starting to go into gear. Hopefully they remain free of signs in infection

Now some pics.
