labels-artwork Label Feedback

Hey y’all,

April here. Just applied for my LLC last week, signing agreement for a commercial kitchen this week, and getting a bunch of other legal things in order this month before starting production next month. I’ve been hard at work redesigning my whole brand and wanted to share what I’ve come up with. I’m open to any feedback regarding compliance, clarity, and appeal.

A few notes before sharing:
  • There are some placeholders on the right. Nutritional facts, contact info, and manufacturer info will be updated before production begins.
  • The weight will be updated as well after testing
  • This will be a 3x5 in label
  • I do not intend on leaving space for a UPC. I do not plan on going into retail and want to stick with direct to consumer sales.
  • My company’s focus is small batch fruity hot sauce. The brand’s vibe is sweet, spicy, fun, dangerous, sexy, and witty.
  • When they’re all together, they form a rainbow that isn’t just pretty and fun to look at, but the colors also act as a heat scale where the cooler colors are milder and they get hotter as the colors get warmer.
Ok, now with all of that out of the way, here’s what I’ve been working on…

I appreciate any feedback. Thank you for taking the time to check out my brand ❤️‍🔥

I got a block of 10 UPCs, I think it is $100 yearly. Having only 10 is part of the reason I multi-stacked the salsa and sauces.

On my salsa labels I use an ( * ) for the fresh items. "Ingredients- tomato*, onion*, green pepper*, blah, blah, blah. *FRESH." If you have multiple fresh items, that could be a way of saving some space with the ingredients listing. Thinking of the fresh lemon and lime juice. If you have space on the label, just list each item as "fresh". In asking, I was just checking on the lemon/lime juice to see if sub-ingredients were missed.

I think having a gun on the label will turn off a segment of the consumer base. Even though I have some, I don't think hot sauce is the place to (advertise? or support?) gun possession. It's a personal decision. The chick looks pretty badass, maybe there is something else that could be added, but I think she looks pretty good as is.

Having a lasso as the heat indicator might not be necessary. If the circle is edited a little bit to make it look more hand drawn and if it is a different color than the scale, that should make it stand out easier. Your scale is just fine, don't need flames.

These are some really nice labels. The series looks good. Cohesive but individual. Just a few comments on already good looking labels. Down to the nitty gritty...

Yeah if these were released as-is (minus the few mistakes) I'd be impressed. Good ingredients too. I'd prob lean toward the pineapple myself. I see your angle is the fruit. That's cool. I guess your most "basic" sauce is the green with lime. If the orange juice doesn't overpower the orange I could see that as an everyday sauce too. The rest look more fruit-forward. Interesting lineup!

Thank you again so so much @thehotpepper & @salsalady!! Your feedback has been much more helpful than literally everybody else who's just like "looks good." Don't get me wrong, love praise. But I crave constructive criticism.

On that note, any positive notes??
Just wanted to touch on that comment as it is so true about comments from friends and family.

For some who may be reading this for the first time, here's some good starting information-

Lucky Dog Hot Sauce creator Scott Zalkind used to take sauces to pot lucks, bbq's, gatherings and anonymously put them on the table and then listen to comments. Friends and Family may be worried about hurting your feelings if they say...'this needs fixing on the label/this is horrible/the sauce tastes too sour..." If you watch people try the sauce and they make a face like sucking on a lemon, that might be a clue... If they double-dip...that is also a clue!

Thanks for sharing with the THP community. There are a bunch of people here with tons of skill sets that are more than happy to help with honest unbiased comments.

I consider myself very fortunate to have family and friends who understand the value of honest feedback - they get that I'm trying to produce the best product I can so they give me honest feedback.

It's taken a long time to train everyone to think that way though...

I like that idea about just setting it out and listening, may have to try it!
