Large Brown Rocoto

Large version of the Brown Rocoto. More of the classic apple shape as opposed to the other browns that have been in our circles for years. Fairly rare one that should be more freely available soon.

Exquisite! Those are probably the largest Brown Rocoto’s I’ve ever seen, certainly compared to those that exhibit the more round or oblong shape that is indeed more common which you alluded to. That’s a really great color on the cut interior view, almost a bit plum like.

How is the flavor with these? I’ve heard/read ‘sweet’ as probably the most common given description as to the Browns. My only experience with any pubes has been just the commercially available Manzano from Mexico and some bagged frozen Red Rocoto from Peru (hard to accurately judge their taste with the bonus of slight freezer burn because who knows how long they’ve been there). These look delicious… great photography certainly helps! Awesome growing!

Beautiful plant!
I wish Rocotos grew better here in this heat and high humidity.

They are such useful plants, and not bad to look at either. Jalapeno is about the only pepper that I can think of that is equal to these when it comes to eating and cooking with. I suggest you try some smaller podded varieties or some that have proven to stand up to warmer seasons.

I think they taste like shit, not disimilar to the oblong ones you mentioned. These are a bit sweeter though, and close to the flavor of some of the reds. The color gets a bit burgandy like most brown varieties of all different species when left to ripen fully.

Stunning grow, well done. May I ask, is that their natural growth habit or did you top those plants? That's a lot of lower growth. I wonder if the lower growth could take root and allow the plant to creep.

Personal opinion, I can't understand the appeal of dark coloured pods, I love to see colours that pop.
