Low Temperatures and Varieties

Karoo, thank you.  I think you nailed it.  The farm is on a ridge sloping east to west.  Plants on the west end have the limp pepper thing that happens with cold weather.  The ones at the top end are fine.  Also, there is afternoon shade on the side that bit the dust.  Willing to bet those last few hours of sunlight they dont get helps the ground stay warmer longer on the other end.

DMF, on mulch I think you are right for the most part but composting mulch does release heat.  Probably not enough when out in the open.  In a cold frame, it makes tons of difference.  Not sure if it would out in the open, seems like it might make a wee bit of difference.
 
I read somewhere that someone used plastic coverings and X-mas lights to keep their plants warm for the short term cold spells. They just have to be the old incandescent bulbs not the new LED ones. Turns it into a mini greenhouse.
