Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

Peeeeeeeeeee to the Teeeeeeeeeeeee

Apologies for my slow updates and replies the past couple weeks folks.....I have just been incredibly tired, and just having a hard time getting up for much of anything as of late. Our youngest also decided to hurl my phone across the room during a tantrum last week which completely destroyed the screen which shattered on impact, so I have been without my mobile THP on the go, which is what I like to do when I am out n'bout.

Will try and get some stuff up later tonight after the hockey game, may even be before that depending on how the buggers play.

So figured I needed to toss up a couple update shots, nothing too exciting but an update none the less.

First pic is top shelf plants which is all the smaller stuff, really they are not so small anymore though eh.......

Second shot shows how badly I need the weather to bloody turn for me, plants have exploded and need room badly to spread out, but again this is my own fault for keeping so many. Perhaps someone will see this and learn from my mistakes?? I should but likely won't.......

Last shot just wanted to give a general idea of how the maters are coming along, most are kinda in between the 2 shown, with a few stragelers in behind that. I tried to make sure I had at least 2 of each and all the extras I tossed onto the kitchen table and are being grown via the east window which is the best I can do. Lots of stretching but if I do need them they are there, the same goes with a bunch of other peppers as well being grown like that.

Weather has been just crap, it snowed a few inches today and even the last 3-4 have not gotten above the zero mark, so can't even get a slow melt on. Though once again it looks like it will warm up this weekend and may even get up to 10C by Sunday is what they say, at this point I will believe it when I see it.

Hockey game,eh. Oh yeah I almost forgot that it’s Stanley cup season for some teams. It’s draft season for the Wings [emoji2957]we pick 6th ( they couldn’t even tank good enough to get the # 1 or #2 pick).

I am not a big fan of teh NHL's draft lottery system...Chicago moving up 12 spots is pretty disgusting really. It used to be you could only move up 4 spots max, I would just prefer to get rid of it and go back to the old way and base it on the position of the standings.

Regardless Detroit has a bright future if they stick to they're guns....They might already be in a better position to in if not being so loyal to Vets and handing out some unmovable contracts like they did. Larkin is certainly a stud and is the best piece moving forward to build around, though its gonna be at least 2 more years before they really turn that corner. Its too bad it will take that long even with that brand spankin new arena, it would be nice for them to have abit more exposure. Doesn't help they are in one of the more competitive divisions in hockey minus the tire fire in Ottawa right now.

I used to love to play hockey when the lake froze in town. It never froze long enough for any of us to get any good, but we had a blast. We were just in blue jeans and a couple of sweat shirts, and my knees and tail bone still hate me from all the bashing they took, because we fell down a lot..LOL. Knees had knots on them like 1/2 a golf ball, no matters we were out the next day if we could get a ride to the lake.

Plants are looking great Matty! I'm hoping your weather comes in for ya ;)

Keep it green cuz they sure are!

Ha.  There's plenty of times I'll learn from others' mistakes or my own, but I'm not going to kid myself into believing I'll correct my over-planting mistakes any time soon ;)

How many plants do you have Matty? I sure hope your weather gets better soon.

Honestly I am not too sure Dee, I can prolly ball park it at 125 or so still. The count was 140ish in Feb/March when I did my inventory finally, but there was some seedlings that came after that, natural selection has brought that number down abit I would say though.

Is still another 90-100+ maters that badly need to get potted up...prolly even more so then the peppers since they grow incredibly fast. Still though, I am happy with how they have grown under those damn corn bulb's, has been no stretching and they are growing nice fat stems. The downside is they have already grown above the hanging bulbs and getting abit of burn here and there on the leaves.

The super duper downside......I still have not started ANYTHING else...No Vegis...No Flowers which kinda bothers me abit. Some stuff will still be fine if I can gitter rollling in the next few days, but others not so much eh.

Your plants look good but I'm not sure if they could handle another month in their current pots. I considered starting in January this year but decided against it because I have less growing spacing than you do Matt.

I think for me the early start is likely going to be the difference maker for anything that will be put into the ground. I would love to have it all in pots and buckets, so stuff can live in the hoop house come the fall , but financially it just is not feasible to go that route all in one season.

And your prolly right, another month in those pots would not be a good thing, would be a shat load of stunted growth just from being root bound, and  like the plants wouldn't die or anything, but it would be counter progressive is my guesstimate.

If I was not so gung ho on the fall fair this year I would have already sold a pile of them off, or even just give some away for that matter. I am still trying to convince a couple different friends to take the plunge, but its tough since we all have wild and engetic small children who roam free through the gardens, I have put stuff in place to keep the kids away from anything that would be dangerously hot, they would also have to do the same.

Honestly I am only bitching cause the winter has been so long, even though I have certainly kept way too much , it gave me something to do since January and likely the winter blues would be much worse if not for that. The past 2-3 years going from winter straight to summer then back to winter and nothing in between has gotten EXTREMELY old.

BTW Red your stuff is really coming along and everything really does look so good, I just haven't had time to comment in everyones threads as of late but I still am following you guys daily if I am able to.

Was this in Texas or some wheres else Scotty?? I played alot of hockey growing up and baseball as well, these days I can barely skate for 15-20 mins without feeling like death after. We take the kids to public skateing as much as we can (4-5xs a month) but next year will be my daughters first year of organized hockey which is very exciting for me, I will also put in a small rink for them to play around on and give some extra ice time

Think the weather is finally making its turn for us here, seem to have a much better forcast for the next week which is what we really need to knock this snow off. I just couldn't bring myself to getting the hoop house ready with a strong chance of snow forecasted each week, seems like we could be past that stuff.

IF they can get this 7 day stretch right, the ground should be bare by next weekend, so today I am taking the plunge and digging out the frame and will gitter all ready finally.

Off to shovel some snow!!!!!!!

I will try and get some before and after shots, will show what I deal with in muy spare time as far as clean up has gone on this property since the previous owners operated a scrap yard, so it has come a long way but still has alot of work needed.
