Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

CHEERS!

That's awesome Matt!  Seedlings hatching. Grow bags stocking up.  Going to be in great shape come the warm weather!  Looking forward to seeing more sprouts and growing peppers.

Thanks Red

Would like to get at least 1 more tray full for sure then will turn the big lights on and hopefully only have minimal loss getting to the outside stage. Will likely have many questions in the coming weeks so would appreciate you guys chiming in once in awhile, really respect what you all have to say.

Think I am gonna take out the back piece on the second shelf with the smaller 3528 strips and replace them with 5050s..will be much brighter and will also give a ton more air flow.

Bastage...nice
Lol I keep doing it by accident, I post something and then see it.

Who was the seller? Was bastage the name?

Man with how slow shipping can be to Canada all they're names should be bastage.....seriously though sellers name is "Sunnychen" for anyone who cares...they do not sell alot of stuff but when they do it ends up being dirt cheap.

I bet its like a clearance sister account of some sort just to get rid of stuff quickly when they need to..that's what it looked like to me anyways whether it is or not. I have bought a few different things the past few months from that act all of it was pretty damn cheap compared to normal anyways.

Who was the seller, I wanna see if they have 5 or 7 gal bags. Pots are expensive lol

Ohhhhh nooooo matty, page topped you too. On a roll.

Aliexpress has some really decent deals on 7Gs and 15Gs I think they are...one sec lemme find them and link them..I was gonna grab another lot from this place since its the cheapest I could find so far...well that is available to me in Canada anyways.

First link is for the 7gs and its either 10g/15g (20 of them) - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/VICTMAX-New-2-Size-Thickened-Non-Woven-Garden-Planting-Grow-Bags-Breathable-Fabric-Planter-Pots-With/32879548244.html?spm=a2g0s.13010208.99999999.426.cb5e3c00ONeuP7

Second link - is for 10 of them and is 4 different sizes - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10Pc-set-4-Size-Large-Size-Plant-Fabric-Pots-Plant-Pouch-Root-Nursery-Pots-Seedling-Grow/32912139854.html?spm=a2g0s.13010208.99999999.485.cb5e3c00ONeuP7

So today finally got off my behind and got going on the top shelf lighting ...took me all damn day and had numerous issues which were all my own fault, well mostly anyways.

Here is the first set all stapled in.....

I am getting close to about half way..things were going good and I was on a roll until just after this point....

And here is the rest of the shelf all done up..by this point I had to do a bunch over again after finding some shorts..probably cause I was rushing it...found some dead LEDs which was also a bugger.

Looks like your pup is saying, "Dad, WTF are you doing?"

Lol...yeah she was pissed cause I made her  stay for the pic once she decided to walk into it. Love the dog to death but man she is stupid...its the blue tick (mixed with rotty or doberman we think?) in her and typical of alot of hounds. And I do not really mean she is dumb cause she is a very smart dog but all sorts of little quiks that could drive a man to drink. Our other dog is an Australian sheep dog with some boarder collier mixed in...smartest damn dog and so quiet...the exact opposite of the hound.

What a miserable morning today ....cold again but the damn car wouldn't start at all..tossed teh charger on it and ran it up all the way to 100%...turned the key....basically nothing..just enough to turn the lights on and interior for a few seconds then dead again.

I hope that the lpug wasn't all the way in on the block heater and the battery is just damn cold...I looked up the battery and of course its a cheap ass piece of shit. We just bought this thing a couple months ago and I wouldn't of thought anyone up here would have such a low end battery with the type of cold we get.

So anyways my wife had to get some one to pick her up to take her into work today and I didn't have time to walk my daughter down to the bus stop and she is home with me today as well now.

Our boydog Cody is half aussie dog. The people who adopted his identical twin brother ran DNA and found out Dad is an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) and Mom is an English Foxhound although Mom looked more like a Yellow Lab to us. Half of the litter were colored like Blue Tick Hounds and the other half looked like Cody with the red ticks.

Cody is textbook Heeler and displays every idiosyncrasy of the breed as well as many Foxhound characteristics. He's an interesting individual. Heelers are unique dogs with some strange behaviors.

He was still a baby when he started heeling me.

So question..well maybe a couple.

Firstly - So for the top shelf I am using a 500w PC power supply with about 400w's of light strips on it...Is the power supply using all 500w's or just using the 400ws the light requires?

Also - Normally I have always just added organic material to my flower beds...some store bought manure a couple times a season and let it roll...So since this will be the longest I have grown inside to start a season when should I start feeding?? I bought a couple general use MG..shultz ect plant foods and may buy a couple more and test which works best, I also have some homemade stuff I am gonna try as well I think.

In a perfect world, 400 watts of 12v lights will use 400 watts of DC power from the power supply and the power supply will use 400 watts of AC power from the electrical outlet. However, nothing ever seems to draw exactly what it's rated at. It's theoretically possible your lights do use all 500 watts. You never know without testing.

I don't think you could test it with a multimeter but I break stupid on using those for much of anything beyond checking voltage. It may give you a reading but 400 watts of 12 volt would be a hell of a lot of amps. It seems like that would likely blow the meter.

Best way I know to get a reading on this is measure the draw on AC power feeding the power supply. Best and safest way I know to do that is with a Kill A Watt meter.  Among other things, it will give you the amps, VA and watts passing through it. It will also set a timer and count the number of kilowatts used over a period of time.

If it the Kill A Watt tells you the PSU is drawing 400 watts, it's a pretty sure bet the lights are using 400 watts. Like in a computer, a PSU capable of delivering 750 watt may only draw 75 watts from the wall when it isn't doing a whole lot of work but those 75 watts are certainly going toward running the computer.

Kill A Watt meters only cost about $20 and are very handy to have around.

Interesting...that was a much more in-depth answer then I was expecting, thank you DW.

I am using old PC power supply's and really only wanna run at the 70% which was recommended on various sites I had looked at, BUT the AMPS are what is forcing me to break out another so was jsut curious if it was going to use just the Wattage it needed or if there was going to be some wasted energy. Either way I have no choice unless I buy a proper power supply for the strips with 2xs the AMPS at least that these PSU's can do.

Volt and watts and amps are all (?)interchangeable(?) What is 500 watts out of the PSU is 12 volts and 41 amps. What goes into the PSU to make 500 watts is 120 volts and 4.1 amps. It all works out the same. Your lights will take only the wattage they need. The PSU will provide only what they ask for and will only draw what is required to do the job from your outlet. I don't think you're really wasting any energy.

I don't know anything about that gizmo you linked. I see it has a lot of bells and whistles and batteries are required. The Kill A Watt is dirt simple and hasn't changed in forever. It's dumb as a box of rocks and just gives you the info you ask for. Nothing fancy. I own three of them. The oldest must be at least 20 years old.
