Meatfreak 2013

With some delay I sowed last sunday, 24 february. First I had doubts to start at all since it was already getting late in season but with all the varieties (thanks to all the great people I traded with!) I wanted to try I had to give it a try
biggrin.png
Keep in mind that the list was over 100 varieties, so I trimmed it down a lot. I intend to keep the 2 strongest plants of each variety except for the Piment d'Espelette. Some seeds are already old like the CGN (±8 years), so I got replacements in case the have popped up in 2 weeks.

I re-potted the Chimayo seedlings tonight, I will give away most of them.

Thanks guys, maters are coming to an end but I made about 25 jars of salsa this weekend from mild to hot :)
Finally the Chinense are starting to ripe off, maybe I will be able to harvest some Scotch Bonnet's after all :(

Although temperatures have dropped a bit the sun was shining today!

I'm hoping those beauties have the time to fully ripen!

Nice pics!
Thanks, Scott. I sure hope the same and looking at the forecasts I have good hope it will :) Haven't paid a lot of attention to my pepper plants this season and kinda neglected them a bit. Should trim them back so the pods on the plants get more light and ripen of... only the days are just flying by.

Everything looks wonderful! I especially love the look of your Giant White Habs, great job!
The Giant White appears to be the real deal this time, they aren't really giants but these are the first pods of the plant. The newer ones are bigger although those won't ripen of in time anymore.

Nice!!! You done well this year.

What type of irrigation do you use?
When it comes to yields I can't complain indeed but due to the cold spring and late start of the summer you can see the setback in ripe pods. Last season I harvested a whole lot more when I planted them out later then I did this year... During the summer I used the drip system but now when temps have dropped I hardly water them anymore.

Great update Stefan !
That Jalapeno Farmers mkt potato looks awesome........what do you end up doing with them ?
Looks like the FDA's are ripening up.....give it a day or two and they'll all be yellow
Nice pastel coloring on the Habanero Giant White...

I hope you get many more days of sun before the seasons over....

Really beautiful work Stefan, both the chiles and the photography, not to mention your garden! Your care and attention to your grow really pays off...

How did you find the flavor of the Chilhuacle Amarillo, especially as compared to the Rojo? I'm planning another big grow of Mexican drying types next season...I can't remember much about the Chilhuacle Amarillo, other than it was quite robust and productive....

Congrats on a stellar season!

Great update Stefan! I have never seen a pepper like that Jalapeno Farmers Market Potato. What does it taste like? Does the rough skin take anything away from the pepper?

Keep those pics coming!!

Those Potato Jals sure are unique looking.

Looks like it's getting cooler, I see you have a long sleeved shirt one...

Have a great week!

Yeah, I'm glad I got a plant with the correct phenotype this year. The other one has different shaped larger/elongated pods again. It's getting colder indeed but inside the tunnel I still get good temps for the pods to ripen of. During the day it's around 60F here and at night 50F, so not to much different that will shock the plants. We're even getting better weather this weekend :)

+1 on that... I've never seen so much on any Jals before! Everything's looking great Stefan... What do you do with your eggplant? My favorite is Baba Ganouj made with smoke-roasted eggplant and served still warm.
It's an really cool variety, grown out by JF years ago. It just somehow got lost a bit and never picked up by the community, except for Chris were I first saw this variety in his topic. I reached out to JF and he has been so cool to provide me with seeds. We fried/grilled and when I had a big harvest my wife my a huge tray of Moussaka which was delicious! Next year I won't forget to sow eggplants like I did this year  otherwise the yield would have been better.

So is it weird eating one of those potato jalapenos?
I haven't eaten a pod yet, because the plant grew a lot first and formed pods later then the rest. Since I don't have any seeds of it left I wanna be sure to ripe of some pods and get the seeds. Once I taste it, I will post my findings in my glog :)

Thanks, Greg. Your Scotch Bonnet's are now finally loaded up, somehow they got hold back a lot compared to my other plants. My own fault I guess since I didn't pay enough attention to them. First I will taste the Jal FMP and see if the flavor is really different from an regular Jal. If not then I will smoke it like the rest of my ripe Jal's. Got about 6 lbs ready now for smoking. You were right about the FDA's, I saw a lot more pods showing color today! The Hab GW aren't indeed fully white, I really believe it has to do with the intensity of the sun and the amount of sun hours. I noticed the same thing with my 7 Pot White's last season, earlier in season they were almost fully white and then at the end they had almost a cream/yellow like color. The Fatalii White however kept very white till the end, gonna grow this one again next season since I liked it a lot and those white varieties are awesome :D

Your to kind, Gary. The photography could be better sometimes but at night my camera is crap  I only harvest one Chilhuacle Amarillo so far and it had a earthy, sweet and good flavor profile from what I remember. Together with the Negro I dried the pods to make a great powder later when I harvested more pods :D The Rojo is really tasty indeed, I did not notice any heat at all but it's very sweet and has good yields. It's my tallest plant, 6 ft now but I re-directed the branches because it's on the lower side of the tunnel. I dried those as well. It's a variety that will return next season and get's more space  So far all the Mexican varieties I'm growing haven't disappointed in flavor at all. Thanks to the milder varieties this season, the wife has starting to like peppers more and more ;)

Nice to see the garden is dialed in.

Should have one more sweet harvest or  maybe even  two.  :fireball:

Keep the awesome updates coming my friend
Thanks for dropping by J-man :D I think I'm gonna have a couple more big harvests indeed, just need to wait till I can pick more pods at once and not 1 at a time. Learned a lot again this season and will do things different next season. Smaller amount of plants, with more space and focus on the ones I have.

Haven't tasted the Jal FMP yet, Conor. As soon as I can harvest a ripe pod I will post a report :) Corking on a pod does give an extra texture to a pepper when eating it.

Aye isn't that strange limit for just about everything, what I've done in that case is not used the standard quote tags and just used @

Nice you used "arrr" do they celebrate pirates day over there? Well I guess they must as it is international and some of my European friends know about it ...

I'm a pirate! That I be!
I sail me ship upon the sea!
I stay up late - till half past three!
And that's a peg below me knee! lol
