More advise/information needed

Hello my pepper freinds...

Most of all my plants are doing great, however, some have started molting their leaves which was due to my fault. I missed a watering by 2 days. They are still doing fine and growing new ones now...

As I mentioned and posted pictures in another post, a lot of my plants are flowering. I searched all of the posts and decided to just let them be. Until now I was clipping the flower buds off. Well, I now see several small peppers starting on these plants with flowers. Should I clip them off or leave them? Keeping in mind that all of these are still in 16oz plastic cups. It seems odd to me that they would be producing pods at this stage.

Thanks for all of your information/advise....

I would leave them. It is just wasted energy if you clip them off.

Are you going to move them outside?

Thanks for your quick reply...

I'm planning on planting them out sometime mid May. I haven't started harding them yet though.

So, I don't have to worry about my yield suffering because the plants are producing pre-mature peppers? Is this sort of thing common?

I'd clip them off, especialy C. Annuums. The plant will waste so much energy trying to flower when it isn't strong yet.

Yes it is common, if you leave the flowers and the pods on it will slow the growth of the plants. This could be a good thing if the plants are getting to big for your setup. On the other hand if they still have room to grow before you set them out pinching the buds off will let the plants concentrate more on growth.

Paul...I have some peppers that are 3" long on my cayennes and hungarian wax...

I have just left them alone...of course, I am in the middle of planting out right now....

AJ you could also pinch some buds if you want your plants to concentrate more on root development. I know that it is pretty much a lost cause with as many plants as you have.

Thanks Dale, If I leave them alone, because I wouldn't mind slowing them down a bit because I just don't have room to pot up. Will they pick up growing speed again once planted outside?

I am so glad that I have been keeping detailed notes on my growing process. Next year I'll be starting a little later. I truly think that I started too early this year and now I have been feeling the pressure of trying to keep them from getting away from me while they are still inside.

They will pick up dramatically when put outside because of the growing environment/conditions. But again if they did not have any buds on them when you plant them out they would grow even faster.

So, if I want to slow them down now...Leave them alone and pinch off the flowers and pods when they are once planted out?

I read somewhere that pinching everything off for the first week or two after planting out would make the plants grow faster and bigger.

It is so confusing sometimes because there is so much differing information out there.

It's a poTAtoe/poTAHto thing.

I pinch off the first few flower buds because I want the plant to put more energy into root and green growth right at the beginning. It would not hurt the plants not to pinch them back, but it's my preference. It gets really, really hot around here in mid to late summer, and I want my plants to have deep and wide roots, and plenty of bushy growth to shade the developing peppers.

If we have more drought this season and they go to watering restrictions, I'll extra especially really, really want deep and wide root systems on all my plants.

So, it's not so much right way/wrong way as personal preference.

Pam is correct, it is whatever you want your plants to do. If a plant has nothing else to put energy into except grow then it will grow faster than if it has to put some of it's energy into sustaining fruit.

Thanks for everyone's quick replies....

I think I'll pinch a couple of plants and leave a couple along to see and monitor the difference.

Yes, but planting out each afternoon after work, or trying to...

got home last night and dishwasher took a dump so I fixed it...got up this morning and it wasn't fixed good enough...water all over the floor in the kitchen, so I fixed it again this morning before coming to work.......It will absolutely NOT leak this time I guarantee it...

PF were in Ohio do you live. I would pinch back like Pam said to but growth into the root but that is my opinion. I am up by the lake and will want till last of May to plant out. Had have frost in first week of June sometimes and lost a whole crop one year. Had my plants out today for two hours. looks like they loved it.

Dan, I'm about 30 minutes south of Canton/Akron area. Everyone has been telling me to wait until Memorial Day. Hope that my plants wait till then.

I think that most of them are probably root bound right now. I just used up all available space by re-potting 5 plants. Next year I am going to wait until the end of February to start my seeds...I feel as if I'm chasing them right now  Kind of like pulling my hair out.
Of course next year my grow room is going to be 12'x 8' and can't wait!!!
