chinense My first Bhut Jolokia pepper experience

Well, that was an interesting experience.

For the first time ever I had the chance to try a super hot.  One of the Bhuts turned red and was begging me to eat it.

I did, and as everyone has said, the smell and the flavour are definitely unique and something I won't soon forget.

The heat didn't come right away, it felt as though there was a hot waxy coating on the inside of my mouth and the heat gradually increased until my entire tongue was on fire and felt like someone was trying to put it out with a garden rake and gasoline. It was at this point I went for the milk.  drinking it did nothing, swishing it in my mouth and spitting it in the sink offered momentary relief.  So I sat down and toughed it out.

Approximately 10 minutes in the heat was not increasing any longer, and I was able to breath through my mouth once again.

45 minutes and the searing heat had almost completely left and all that remained was a nice overall warm feeling in my entire mouth.

In the end, the pod wasn't the largest ( 35mm long and 20mm diameter), and for that I am grateful.  The taste was not bad and definitely not was I was expecting, I could see the flavour working really with a variety of foods.

And now on to the next one.

Nice review!
Had my first and only bhut harvested in September -- i nibbled it to death over 4 days, quite timidly -- and enjoyed it very much. At least one bowl of soup, and at least one sandwich brought a pleased smile -- along with a few sweat beads on my forehead.

In my opinion, my one fresh bhut tasted much nicer than the dried storebought ones i have bought since. They seem to have a very pronounced and bitter aftertaste if used in significant amounts in food -- and especially if consumed directly.
Whatever else, i know i'm hooked... both growing and eating them!

Happy first superhot!

It would be interesting to know what cooking ideas your first Bhut Jolokia gave you.
