My First Sauce

Well, again, thanks be to mikeinsc for the Yellow 7 pods. I went down to the market today and picked up some ingredients for my first sauce. It's a bit of a departure from your normal sauce. I decided to do an Asian inspired sauce. Here are the ingredients:

*4 yellow 7 pods (seeded)
*1 C. rice vinegar
*4 cloves garlic (minced)
*+/- 2 Tbsp fresh ginger (minced)
*1 med white or yellow onion (diced)
*+/- 1/4 C. carrot (diced)
*1 small can mandarin oranges (i used the ones in light syrup)
*1 small can pears (i used the ones with no sugar added, figured there was enough in the oranges)
*2-3 Tbsp peanut oil
*2-3 Tbsp soy sauce

Cook chiles, onion, garlic, carrot and ginger in peanut oil until onions are soft. Add vinegar, pears, oranges and soy sauce and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20-30 minutes. Put in blender and puree until smooth. At this point, although it's not listed, I wasn't happy with the consistency, so I added some no sugar added apple juice and a small Tbsp of key lime juice until it was where I liked it. I'll be honest, I haven't tried it yet, as I want to give it time to come together, but my wife, who HATES spicy food said it smelled incredible. You'll see in the pics that I cooked it on the grill outside. I didn't want to take a chance cooking those chiles inside the house (I have a 3 year old). Oh, and note to self, WEAR GLOVES NEXT TIME!

Hope these pics came through, I'm new to photobucket. Enjoy!

just gave it a try. you immediately get the ginger and garlic with sweetness in the background. The vinegar quickly follows that and then the heat kicks in, I'd say medium a to slightly above burn. I'm quite happy and can't wait to try this with fish or chicken!
