My pepper journey

Hello everyone, I'd like to just post up my journey as a beginner.

I started a garden this previous year, all outdoors, and had more tomatoes and cucumbers than I could even use. My bell peppers did awful, I think I got two or three tiny mutated looking peppers. Jalepenos did good as well as my little red mexican chilis (pretty sure thats the exact name that was on the seed labels.) Perhaps my proudest was my ghost pepper plant, which produced probably 60 pods.

Unfortunately, I thought I could harvest them early as the first frost was fast approaching, and hopefully they would ripen well like green tomatoes in the windowsill. Eventually they just turned mushy and nasty. Only a few actually turned red and the rest were lost. I chalk this up to being a beginner, and hopefully this post will bring me some insight on what I could be doing better.

Anyways, before I get much further I have gotten a lot of inspiration from YouTube, Khang Starr and Jeb the Gardener on YouTube are awesome channels I highly recommend checking out. Khang is mainly pepper videos and he does really awesome crossbreeding, Jeb is more around general garden stuff and uses the Kratky method for just about everything which has gotten me into Hydroponics!

Here are a few of my plants I am growing,

I'm away on business for another two weeks or so but my girlfriend has been tending the crop. I SWEAR she's got a magic touch because they are flowering and I believe producing the first pod!

First pod being off a OW jalepeno.

It's a bit late to get out the computer, but tomorrow pictures to follow thanks to my gf

Stay tuned

Hey everyone, here are some pictures sent to me by my girlfriend. First 2 are of the AeroGarden she got me for Christmas, as seen in the first picture, the cardboard cup has one of my YBS seedlings in it for the 2018 Growdown.

The 3rd picture is of my 2nd YBS (the smallish one lol)

As well as 2 other peppers, Aji Chile and Aji Dulce (they're the kinda tall ones)

The rest of the pictures are of my mystery pepper I have growing Kratky style in a mason jar lol.

Oh, and a picture of my 7ft tall (just a guess, it's huge) Tomato plant. I hope it'll go into hyper producing mode once Spring hits. So far only 2 tomatoes growing haha.

Anyways, enjoy!

Little update, lots of flowers!

Oh and started more seeds! List is:
Pink tiger x2, sugar rush orange x3;

Peach bhut x 2, brown monga x3;

Not white bhut 2017 x2, urfa biber x3;

Big Jim x2, yellow jalepeno x2, cream fatili;

Creme fatili x2, white lightening pod x2

White lightening pod x2, Tepin lemon drop 2013 x3;

Lemon drop x2, lemon drop 2016 x3;

Sugar rush orange bhut 2017 x2, chocolate cherry pepper x3;

Aji largo x2, paper lantern, aji crisal, "ma" mystery

**edit, duplicate peppers are not a mistake, that's just how I wrote it in my notes so I could keep track of which peppers are what in their rows. So anything that's listed twice is just at the end and beginning of 2 rows of seed pods

Of the 50 seeds I started, 5 hooks appeared today

Pictures to follow!

Oh and I ate my first tomato off my F2 tomato, it was a very large orange tomato, very few seeds, and incredibly dense/ beefy.

I have planted about 10 seeds that I found in the tomato hoping this summer I can get another gen. It was very good!

11 little sprouts, including a few that were just barely hooks. Got em set on an old AeroGarden my buddy let me borrow (4 of them actually)

Hopefully I'll have another 10 hooks to pot up tomorrow!

The hooks were sugar rush orange bhut, white lightening pod (from 2013 and 2016), an Urfa Biber, Tepin x Lemon Drop, And Chocolate Cherry pepper. I'm growing a few varieties, I think 3, that are from 2 different years each. It'll be interesting to see if there are any differences. I've got the sugar rush orange, Tepin x lemon drop, and white lightening pod from 2013 and 2016-17 passed along to me.

The other picture is my grow down throw down yellow brain stain, dwarfed by others but the growing season is fast approaching so hopefully I can catch up.

Day 2, only 2 more hooks so far.
1 more Tepin x lemon drop, and my first yellow jalepeno hook.

Many of them sprouted a few of the seeds I planted in each pod, ill give em a day or two of standing completely tall before I try and separate them. If I can manage to save a few and re pot in pods I will try, but main goal is just to have 1 strong plant per pod.

I separated the double hooks, put them in rock wool, and if they survive ill plop those cubes down into an extra AeroGarden I have and see how well they do hydroponic compared to coco and perlite

A little update, the rock wool seems to be working fine.

As of today I've got 40 pepper seedlings, and about 6 of my tomato seedlings growing from my giant tomato plant. I'll get some pictures once I start noticing my first true leaves.

When do you all suggest giving small doses of nutes? I was going to give 1/2 strength does at the first true leaves I see.

First true leaf appearance is good timing. I've done 1/2 strength 12-2-2 now without adverse affects. But I have some 6-6-4.5 stuff coming for the rest of them. I think this one was a bit too high on nitrogen; although the roots DO look good and have begun filling the media in the pot.

This one is now 14 days after first true leaf appearance and 12 days after transplant - transplanted it quickly after true leaves, 2 days after they formed; it'll get full strength weekly doses starting next week. That's a 4" pot.

Note the comparison to the right - transplanted same day in to an organic mix I was testing (which was a complete failure).

Hey Trent, thanks for the comparison picture! Do you have a fertilizer that you'd say works pretty well for all stages? Or at least the seedling/veg stage? I've been meaning to check Wal-Mart though I know they won't have a very good selection, it'll probably just be miracle grow.

I've been secretly stalking your farm Glog. I've gotta say I'm pretty envious of your operation there. I'm hoping to grow anywhere from 50-70 plants this season fingers crossed. Here's my operation so far hah!
