Newb question....Best method to let plants grow??

Ok, so i cut off the tops of all 6 of my plants thinking it would grow more, and it looks like it is just growing little shoots out of the sides instead of growing taller... should I allow it to just keep growing like this? or should i cut off the new shoots all on the sides for upward growth?

or does it matter even? thanks!

Cutting the tops off is supposed to make them grow bushier, not taller. I would leave them be now.
