OCD 2017!!!

Well it's 2017. Finally! Last year was a success, as far as the ground plants were concerned. Virgin, clay ground. My Chinese got smacked by hail twice! No room for error with those. Out of 12 plants I got ONE BBG. First and only. That variety is cursed. Tried for the past 3 years and some sort of calimity happens.

This year I decided to try 21+ different varieties of the BBG. I have 9 Reaper crosses. 21 and counting other varieties. I built a hoophouse and some COB led's. Planning on getting them outside in March sometime. That might be a delusion, beings I'm in Colorado. We shall see. There is only a few varieties that I've grown before. The rest are all new. I'm planning on isolating most of them.

Just started some Lemon Drops for Throwdown Growdown. I will wait a couple weeks before I start the others. Everything needs to be in order before I germinate. No turning back at that point. I want two plants from most varieties. Plants need to be woody by ground day. That's the only way I have a chance at success with late maturity varieties. If I have extras, I'll give away to my friends of THP.

My list is growing, but not much. Here is some of the varieties that made the cut.

Wow Chuck!

I see your time has come!

It's been a long road, bhut it's your time. Congrats on your grow buddy! It's stellar!

May the pod be with you :P
Thanks Scott!

This has been a community grow. Without your help as well as others, I frequently converse with. I wouldn't be where I'm at. I've got a lot to learn, but I know what works from trial and error. I have upper 90's all Summer and 20's all Winter. Its challenging, but rewarding as well. The wealth of information, I gain from the drastic temps is priceless. I've been watching these plants closely since January.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you have a great weekend.

I love your jungle pics! Trick or Treat harvest will be the treats of the neighborhood. You've worked so hard on these plants and they're showing it. Can't wait for the colorful reds, oranges, yellows showing through.
Thanks Jane. Wow,I havent had a Update in awhile. Not much going on. Waiting for flowers to open and stick.

Chuck welcome to polytunnel growing ... impressed that's what I call a jungle let's hope there are many hidden gems under those branches
Thanks John. The polytunnel is awesome. I dont think I would be getting anything without it this year. There are a few pods here and there in the tunnel.

Ill try and get some pics. Its been dark when I leave for work,
as well as return. Its cold. We had snow on the mountains after the clouds left yesterday. Its 31F out right now. Plants wont take much of that outside. I think my only chance is in the tunnel. All the plants outside and in are flowering I think its to late for the ones outside. Thats to bad. I need to focus on the tunnel next year and forget about outside gardening. To many variables. I promise Ill get some pics for this glog.

Take care you all.

Sorry to hear the snow is down in the higher elevations just above you. We're pulling for the plants protected inside the hoophouse. I wanna see you get at least ten pounds of pods to see you through the winter. [emoji106]

Thanks Rick. Maybe we will have a change in temps. Right now I have the fans shit off to the house. Im thinking of buying a ventless heater. I want to get the right one. Dont want to just buy one out of desperation and it not work. Ill do some research. If not now, I will get one before Spring. I think, I still have a good chance of pepper production. They might be on the small side, but as Paul says, Every pods a victory. Right? Im not giving up on the greenhouse. Ill plant some earlier varieties next year. The Chinese are so finicky. Ill plant a handful of Chinese, just not 90% of the grow. Its not efficient for me. The odds are against me.

Take care and good talking with you.

How's the temps in the greenhouse with the cold? I know you have a greater challenge with the temps than I do for sure. We're all pulling for ya buddy!

And I do know next year will be better, you now know how to things under better control ;)

The weather here is holding, so far. From now on it's a crap shoot

I kinda fell behind on you glog Chuck, but got all caught up today.

This comparison shot had me awestruck, its just incredible!

Had to post this pic of the garden. I had to take my time trying to get to the back. Can't believe this is the same plants exactly 2 months ago. I need to put some t-post's at both ends and run some line to pull back the plants.

How are the plants going now? I'm really hoping you get some pods!

What are the temps in the greenhouse now? Extremes of weather are always annoying for growing, but you seem to be taking care!

All the best, and good luck! I'll try to stay up to date as you wrap this baby up!

Well, I was going to do a video update. We had a cold snap last night and temps dropped below zero. Pulled half the plants in the hoophouse. I still have a bunch that are alive in there, but very few pods. I imagine, Ill get a dozen or so pods out of 150+ plants. Im sorry for the bad news. I wish it was better. Maybe next year. These plants were the biggest and healthiest plants to date. Just flowered late.

Ill experiment on heating methods this Winter. Ill make a list for next year soon. Cutting WAY back and if its not self automated method, Im not doing it. Ill try some tried and true hardy varieties that are earlier and dont mind the cold or the heat. Done it before. Those Chinese varieties are to picky. Ill grow a few special plants, but not a entire garden of them. Ill buy my supers for now on.

It still was fun growing. I learned a lot this year. I managed to beat the hail this year but still failed to harvest. Two years in a row is frustrating.

Thank you all that have followed and conversed. Thank you to all that have contributed to my growing experience.

You all ROCK!

Chuck

I'm sorry as hell your grow was a bust this year Chuck... it looked so promising until the hard freeze too. At least you have your soil built up and your hoophouse in place for next year. You might want to try Gochus, Goat's Weed and Chimayos next year. All are mountain varieties. Scott seemed to have success with his Orange Thai, and I'm thinking that Frutascens varieties like Tabasco and Peri Peri might be better at fruit set in the heat of your summer.
I've got a few cases of hot sauce put away... Let me know if you'd be interested in a few bottles and I'll post 'em out asap. Cheers!

Bummer Chuck!

I feel your pain. I've had 3 rough years in a row. The only thing I can add is larger plants come dirt day. LB and I agreed this weekend that we're not going to run through the summer again next season.
So I want 14" and taller plants come April 1st. They will be pulled when they stop producing, which is July. The Chinense will be in the 15 gallon grow bags I bought this summer (they seem to hate my dirt lately..LOL)

I really wish I had decent pods to send you. We've been battling the darned Leaf hoppers that ruin about 65% of the harvest. Bhut it aint over yet!

But somehow I feel you'll never have to buy peppers :P

Thanks Andrew. The plant were magnificent. Just went out again this morning to find the rest of them done. Oh well. Ill pull and prep the soil for next year. I want to build a nice work station in the hoophouse. Would be nice to have a potting table. Ill cut back and figure out where the plants will go. Going to put a heater in there and work on better climate control. The temps are crazy right now. 26f this mornings and 76f for the high. Thats just loco.

Thanks for the offer friend. I think I have enough pods, I froze from you and a couple others to get me through the Winter. Dont want to be greedy. I also have a bag of pods from last year, I need to make into purée. That should hold me over.

Thanks again, you rock!

Thanks Rick.

Dont be sorry. Im the one that is sorry. I planted so much this year, because this was the year I wanted to send everyone else pods. Im more bummed about that then myself not having pods.

I love growing. It was still a blast. Lots of work, but worth it. I learned a wealth of information. I should have taken your advice and grown those varieties. I remember you saying that last year. Im stubborn I tell ya. LOL! Goats Weed, and Tabasco have done well for me in the past. I didnt grow them this year because I have a good quantity of them dried. Next year will be different.

Thanks for the hot sauce offer. Ill have to decline. Ill be making some soon and Im running out of room to store goods. I have a little galley kitchen. Not many cupboards. I end up storing my canning goods in my closet. LOL!

Thanks again buddy. You are a wealth of great information.

I hear you about bigger plants. Ill try that next year. I thought they were pretty good this year. Most had woody stems. I really need to get the temps under control. Maybe the shade cloth I used was to much shade. Ill try something different next year.

The leaf hoppers only got the plants outside the hoophouse. I had some promising pods from the plants in the ground next to the hoophouse. They ate most of all the pods. Need some netting for anything exposed.

Thanks again Scott. Its been a fun time conversing with you all this season. I actually had time this year. Like they say, no rest for the wicked. I need to get out there and get some things done before the snow falls.

Chuck
