Oh no - tragedy!!!

friends, a terrible thing has happened!

I started my germination a little late this season due to some travelling and didn't want my young plants to die while I was away (note to self - only travel in autumn or winter from now on). I am using peat plugs and a heating mat, around 50 to start with, comprised of the following varieties: Mesilla, Cayenne, Red Savina, Bhut Jolokia, Naga Morich, Fatalii and Golden Habanero.

after 7 days I had all Cayennes showing and about 5 Savinas, great start! three days later (Saturday/yesterday) my parents in law came over. my father in law is a joiner and we are laying a timber floor in the back room. he and my wife were moving something in 'my' garage (only my bikes and chile stuff are in there), when I heard "oh no" from the beautiful chilliwoman.

well, my heating tray and all my chile pots were strewn all over the floor. they were all picked up and appear to be undamaged, but, the problem is - all the sticks holding the variety names were dislodged. so now I have 50 small pots and don't know what is in each one!

I'm devastated in that I wanted to save a lot of seed this year for personal use and to share. now it looks like I'll have to employ mass seeding saving techniques and hope I get lucky!

any ideas?
 
First of all...how long are you planning on leaving chilliwoman locked up in that spider-cupboard for...it's dark in there & scary.

Let them flower, determine what they are from the flowers then pick the flowers off & isolate the varieties as planned.
 
good idea but most are chinense so won't they all be almost identical?

she's never coming out unless it's to feed me or for a conjugal visit
 
There may be subtle differences in leaf shape, size etc. You don't have to determine exactly what one is, just as long as it looks different from the others. You may only truly know what each group is when the pods arrive. How exiting is that going to be?
 
don't you hate a spelling error in the title of a thread!?

I'd rather know what they are without the added excitement I think. as I was going to cull some of these it will now make it harder to do and I may have to grow them all and forego the other varieties I was going to plant and save them for next year...

Crap, that really is tragic. Can't keep them in what they're in now until flowering, then sort & cull?
 
Only other thing I can think of mate is start again and be a little later getting a crop. I have Jolokia & Naga seeds I could send tomorrow.

Anyone else have the other varieties and able to send a christmas card to the 'Save the Chilliwoman Fund'?
 
I used all my good seed up so I have no backups. fortunately though I think all should still germinate without issue. it's just that I won't know what's what until they've started flowering and fruiting. that means I'll have to bag buds on (virtually) every plant to guarantee getting pure seed of each variety for next year. I suppose it just adds to the challenge.

thanks for the offer of some seed, though I may need freebies next year. we'll see what happens. you can send me some ripe pods to brighten my mood if you like... ;)
 
Bent..I mistakenly did not read the whole thread and thought you had the tragedy rather than Chilliman. I'm okay now. Dude..you got Naga seeds? That means you have/had Naga peppers. Go to the popper thread/post...we need a Naga plate of poppers with evidence of consumption. I reckon it will be you, IGG or Philiperv who come up with that first. What did you do with your Naga harvest bro? I admit, they are too much for moi, but someone might be able to eat them ala poppers. Are you up for that? You'll get my pm on other stuff. Cheers Bro. I feel for you chilliman64... I had a similar thing happen this season (although it was more my doing :rolleyes:) - I stuffed up the labels on my dorset naga and naga morich plants, so I don't know which plants are which. Even with a couple of flowers (and now a tiny little baby naga :)) I still have no idea. Luckily they're very similar anyway (if not the same).

My solution would be to just grow them all out, and get the other varieties you want. You can never have too many plants - I have about 65 at last count. Just add some new garden beds... If the chilliwoman complains, just remind her that's it's all her fault ;)

Still waiting for my first crop of them & Bih Jolokia. Will try a few in a cowardly fashion before I decide if I'll throw down a whole one.

Man I have done that with giant pumpkins, but must be hard on peppers. What do you just cut off the ones that you miss?
 
well my little seedlings are going great guns! from 52 jiffy pellets I have only six that haven't germinated in 25 days. this means I can start off a few more that I will at least be sure of what the variety is.

scarecrow, I'll just have to isolate buds on every plant until I know what they are to ensure I get pure seed for next year. either that or I'll just have to buy/beg for some.

thanks to those of you that offered seed.

I'm over the distress that I suffered when this first happened. now I don't mind so much as it'll just add to the excitement of growing!
