Operation Golden Garden 2014: Let's Get Started!

**Instead of starting an entirely new GLOG, I decided to tack 2014 on to the end of this one. So if you have already went through 2013's grow, just jump ahead to page 40.**

Before you go on, I would recommend you grab a beer or something else stiff to drink.  If you didnt follow my grow last time around, I have the tendency to go on, and on, and on, and on.  Also, I may not be the most "PC" out of the group, so if you are looking for clean language, on topic discussion, and general 'niceness', I am sure that I can point you in the right direction.

Ok, now that we got that out of the way....I AM STARTING A FREAKIN GROW LOG!  A quick bit of back story. Since I spent more time in high school partying than studying, I didn't have much of a choice following graduation. I decided to enlist in the Marines (there really isnt another choice) and now here I am 8 years and 5 deployments later.  This last go around I left the first few days of September and just got back yesterday (9 months for all the other 'non studying' folk).  As most of you know, if you want some bangin pepper plants, you need to start early, and May 25th aint early.  So right before I left I cut everything back and prayed to the pepper gods that my plants would make it through winter so I could have something to come home to.  Up until yesterday I thought that they were just taking time to put on some green, but when I walked through the fence to see my dogs, a ritual that I typically do after every deployment, I realized that the plants were not there and instead was four trays of new plants just waiting for planting.

Note:  IPhones are not the world's leading video recording devices.  And as a result, I may not be easily heard.  Dont worry, I didn't have much to say initially anyways, I was just a bit more surprised than anything.

For someone who seems to always talk a bit too much, I didnt have much to say initially.  I was freaking out inside and didnt know if my wife got them or what.  When she told me that the guys from THP did it, i was blown away.  You gotta understand, over the past 9 months Bill (RocketMan) organized a "Operation Hot Sauce" care package rotation for me and my guys.  A bunch of members here chipped in and sent packages of sauces, powders, peppers, and other treats to help make this deployment a bit more enjoyable.  To hear that they ALSO chipped in and GAVE ME A GROWING SEASON pretty much put me over the edge.  I know that I already messaged you guys but I wanna thank RocketMan, Coheed196, Romy6, KingDenniz, Silver_Surfer, STC3248, DesertChris, Sanarda, MuskyMojo, Pulpeteer, WalkGood, DocNRock. Stickman, Annie57, Pic 1, Pr0digal_Son, Jamison, Spicy Chicken, HighHalt, Fremp, SethSquach, 3/5 King, Patrick, Bigoldude again for helping make this happen for me.  And although giving me a garden was WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH, they also gave me a little sumpin sumpin that will help out picking up the last minute things that I need to make sure I have everything I need for the season!

So this morning, I got up early because I am still on Afghanistan time, cooked breakfast, and then after the family ate we went out to the garden to plant everything.

Turkey Day went well, big ol bird and a ton of food! Gotta love it!
Yea man, I am totally feeling that....I just finished the 1st chop on the list and I am sitting right under 100 varieties. I am planning on planting 4 per variety (2 per cell and cull to one), but that will put me at about 200-250 come plant out. I only plan on planting one of each come May, but as we all know, you should always have extras!

Holy cow, that's a lot of peppers you'll have there!  Can't wait to see how these turn out...
I'm glad I gave you that Naga Suomi cross, I didn't give that out to many people, just you and one other I think... I hope they do well for you!

By the way, the Morango cross is [Pimenta da Neyde x Bhut F2] x Pimenta Morango... and it is the F1 ;) .

I'm going to follow this one closely since I'm planning on growing quite a few of the same varieties. I didn't read through the 2013 Glog but out of curiosity, how much property do you plant everything on?

;)

Oh, hey KINGDeNNiZ, what you had was definitely a different pepper.  I only made the cross this past season (2013).  What you have that is labelled Naga Suomi... I'm pretty sure that was just a straight Naga Suomi, I know that one because I grew it out myself.

Nice list!! Also very cool set up I always wanted one of those tents but I only start my seeds inside then put the plant outside no need for lights really but those just look cool

Thanks for the clarification and the seeds. You are one of the few out there that are growing a ton of crazy crosses, and I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Glad to have ya aboard! I have plenty of space, and room for expansion.  I have a 3/4 acre lot, and I planted in a 350ish sq ft plot this year. Next year I am looking to double that growing area, and expand beyond that if need be. I will shoot a video at some point in the next week or two and show the grow tent and the grow space.

Thanks Jamie. We had a great time, and as always, when my dad comes into town I put him to work! We put up the tent and got things set up, and he even entertained the kids and dogs long enough for me to throw a couple gallons of peppers on the smoker...I shit you not they have been on the dehydrator for 24 hours and the garage smells like the smoker is running inside it! Ill send ya some when it is done drying..definitley the smokiest yet!

Thanks! I usually start in the winter, and have planted out too early (mid April) a few times. The tent lets me start seed and carry through until 1 May. I am gonna do everything I can to hold my horses and not plant out until that I am SURE that there wont be anymore freezing nights!

Well the wife just informed me that we are going to be traveling down south for a couple days around Christmas to see family...not thrilled. That means that I am gonna have to push my plant date a couple weeks. I dont wanna leave for a week and have brand new seedlings that need to be tended to. It will still be early enough to get a great start on the season, but I was hoping to start next week... :(

You know Matt... I just started a few Manzano seeds as a test to see if they would sprout, and I have one seedling up and another hook showing. I already have an OW Manzano so I don't really need more... if you could manage to swing up here briefly on your way home I could hand them off to you...

Thanks. I'm planting this year on an acre lot, but in raised beds. I have the luxury of farmland as well, but I doubt my grow will ever get that big to need it. I'm looking at only having around 25 plants this year, with that maybe doubling next year. I'd love to see a video of your setup...gives me ideas and perspective on different ways of doing things.

Good luck!

Matt that's a helluva list of superhots......and I admire the list of Milds ..Stuff.......................
Perfect size grow tent, 3 months would give you one nice tree with that HPS......or a bunch of pepper plants.......ha
Nice price on the metal stands, those are hard to find  on sale.
Starserts are the way to go. I would suggest using the cheapo 72 sq standard inserts for the start, but purchase the 36 or 48" deep starserts for the 1st transplant. You can get a nice root zone with the deep narrow starserts......from those I would pot up to 1 gal pots.
Just keep in mind if you take your foot of the brake and start out too quickly with the seeding you can run out of room and lighting quickly. Although...that's never-ever happened to me........... :liar:
With a backyard the size of yours, I can see another bed or two dug out in the spring.........right? .........do-it !
Have fun with the startup and game plan.....and have a safe and enjoyable Holiday season

I would love to take you up on that, but I seriously doubt I would have any room...I am doubting the space as is...lol! Thanks though

I started small my first year, then every year it seemed that I kept adding more and more and more. It never stops!

I looked at those 36 cell trays, and the only thing I don't know is if I'll have space. As is, I wanted to go from the seed tray to 2.5" pots and that would be my first significant cut down on plants. But maybe if I turn the tray and only use the ones that are covered completely by the light (probably 30 a tray), I could still fit about 200+ on those top shelves. I'll also look at the 1 gallon for when the big light gets broken out.

I got a couple great pkgs in the mail this week. First from Dave (gunslngr), then from Dulac
image-1.jpg

Dave sent me over a couple bottles of sauce and a bag of roasted pepper powder. As well as some moruga satan strain seeds. Dulac sent over a bunch of hybrids. The 7 Jonah x Pimenta de Neyde, one of those crossed with a moruga, and a couple ore fun ones. I'll add them to my list in a bit.

Also, I wanted to thank sawyer for sendin me over some moruga seeds. got this in as well.

Time for some Sunday night relaxation, cheers!

Just can't beat the pepper love going on here!

Hey if you find a good deal on 1 gal pots please pass it along, I'm going to be looking....and will do the same.

Stay warm!
