Ordered a new Digital Camera

Take a picture of it.

Cool man. Post some food.

How's this? ;)

PMD - this is what you will want to look at for you distance limits.
  • Focal Length: f/4.4mm-185mm; Full Aperture: f/2.8-f/11 (Wide), f/5.6-f/11 (Telephoto)

Optical zoom is terrible in most cases and you would need a tripod and remote fore to get pristine crisp pictures if that is at all possible. That is a nice setup for that price. Can't wait to see some of the long range shot using optical focus, I could be wrong since I have not used it for a few years and maybe it is better now. I know it sucks on my iPhone :)

Nice score and have fun!

Thanks guys. Joyner from the reviews I have read and watched on YouTube it is not hard to hand hold it for shots at the longest telephoto setting because of the image stabilizing software.
It's always best though to use a tripod or something to steady you when you take shots at extreme distances.
Here is a video someone posted on YouTube with the camera in video mode looking way out across this bay. Not bad considering it's f/11 at the 1,000mm setting.

The camera arrived yesterday and I did a couple of test shots of the zoom today. I love this camera!

Here are kids playing at the school behind my house at the lowest zoom (24mm):

Here is with the optical zoom at the maximum of 1,000 mm (42x):

Did the same test here with a pine tree in the neighbors yard:

You mean digital? Optical zoom, camera's optics.
They can call it whatever they want it appears but the lens is not doing the work. As long as he is happy then I am happy for him. :)

  • Fujinon 42x optical zoom lens with approx. 2.0x digital zoom (up to approx. 84x with 42x optical zoom)
  • Focal Length: f/4.4mm-185mm; Full Aperture: f/2.8-f/11 (Wide), f/5.6-f/11 (Telephoto)

In optical zoom mode the lens is absolutely doing the work, in digital zoom it's electronics.
Let me state it a different way, the glass (focal length) only goes to 185 mm, everything beyond that is camera magic.

True. To get the 1,000mm focal length this camera goes to on a Canon will cost you $13,000 for the lens alone so call it "magic" if you want.
I call it great performance at a fraction of the cost. :P  ;)

Exactly, 600mm fixed is 12k :( I have a F2.8 70 - 200 with a 2x extender, even I have to cheat due to cost. :)

They are outrageously expensive but they are really just a miniature overpriced telescope.
You can buy an Astro Physics 6" Starfire refractor telescope for about $7-8k and the optics are among the best in the world except for maybe Takahashi.
They are hard to transport for photography though.
