How do you keep the Papaya wasps from laying eggs in them?

I gave up years ago on trying to raise papaya.  My plants got humongous - trunks over 12" in diameter - but they were always infested.  It always seemed like they got the fruit before I could cover them.

These are the Hawaiian Variety Solo Papayas I think they have been bred to be resistant to certain pests.

My mom always plants hers near the air conditioning unit. She says the wind from it blows away those nasty maggot wasps before they are able to infect the fruit.

My papaya got taken out by Irma before it became productive

I like the green papaya better than the ripe - used as a salad - it's refreshing and crisp and delicious!

I have Papaya seeds from Puerto Rico that I hope to plant one day if I ever get a greenhouse. Winters here in zone 8 get frigid!

With Thai peppers or truly any hot pepper would work. Gotta be able to man up to the fish sauce though...

I actually had a tree that grew several large ones (9+football size), but I had to pick them as they were just ripening, due to weather conditions.  Here, we don't have iguanas (yet).  Squirrels won't touch them (yet).  They were killer yummy!  Then the plant did not survive the winter.  Well, I am in North Florida.

You won't be getting them, either.  They barely survive the "harsh" Miami winters...

Iguanas are mad delicious.  Sure, they're pests.  But I'd rather have yummy iguanas than the damn squirrels.  Our Florida squirrels aren't even worth dressing. (I ate my fair share of squirrel in younger days)

Heck, if we had iguanas here, I'd plant papaya just to attract them.
