PaulG 2019 - Three Gallon Grow

Decided to put links to my other threads in the first post
of my new threads so I can find them easily when looking for
information. Did that this year on the first page and it is
very handy:

PaulG 2013
PaulG 2014
PaulG 2015
PaulG 2016
PaulG 2017
PaulG 2019

So, this thread is sort of a sub-thread to my regular 2019 Grow Log.

I am growing ten plants in 3-gallon pots this season.

Thinking about this because I want to be able to move
them in and out of the garage or greenhouse this Fall in
order to extend the season. Plus, I am not sure how much
longer I want to wrestle with the big containers. Even wet
10-gallon pots are getting heavier each year, and always
having to get help to lift the big containers in and out of their
saucers is getting to be a drag.

This thread will concentrate on just the 3-gallon plants. If I
can get decent production from a 3-gallon Pot, that would
be great. I think that will be the case based on my grow of
the Aji Amarillo plants in 2-gallon pots in 2017.

The ten plants included in this mini-grow:
  • JA Red Habanero
  • Yellow Scorpion
  • SLR cross
  • Aji Amarillo
  • Peruvian Red Rocoto
  • Chiltepin
  • Goats Weed
  • c. chacoense
  • BJ Hybrid (3-inch pod)
  • ? - probably Mark's (Dragon49) PdNxBJ if it arrives healthy and I can get it going!.

Beautiful starts, that purple youngin looks awesome.

Happy growing Paul

Thanks, Dan. I am looking forward to see how
lespaulde's plant compares to the PdNxBMJ
of Tristen's, and my BJ Hybrid 'Purple Thunder'.
Lots of similarities in the three, both in growth
habit and pod bi-coloration in response to the
sun.

Awesome sub-glog Paul, and great idea as these plants deserve their own space for discussion... ;)

You're well on the way, and using 3 gal containers on most of my plants too, I do believe you can get quite good size plants that way too. BigCedar's (albeit in a 5gal) is a good testimony to that, provided the right soil + nutes are used - what a beast of a plant that was BC! :)

Very curious about the PdNxBJ plant, and I would probably be interested in some seeds at the end of season too - my purple BJ took a bit of a hit from neglect the past 2 months, but I just potted it up to....drum roll.... a 3 gal pot with fresh soil (Coco), so I'm hoping it will take off again. Many leafs turned a very pale green, so probably a lack of N, but since I started adding proper nutes again, new growth is looking awesome, and with those nice purple hints in them, so I'm confident it will be producing pods again within a month or so.

All in all, great efforts my friend, and now I have yet one more glog to follow regularly... :)

Well hell...I ordered a 12-pack of 5 gallon non-woven fabric pots, and while I'm cleaning the transplant table I stumbled into an unopened 25-pack of 5 gallon poly bag nursery pots.

I also did a calc on the 12 inch pots I put my OWs in, believing the label that said "holds 8 quarts"...They actually come to 3.something gallons.

No, the Darlin' Bride hasn't been briefed.

I'm always appreciative of the company, LP!

I will for sure save you some seeds from all my BJ crosses.

Hope you continue to have a good season!

It's been so long since I opened up this Grow Log,
it was on the third page of the index!

Hey Paul. Great start this year! Hope the weather cooperates this summer.
Thank you Richard. I hope you are doing well, brother.

Weather has been pretty good, but I see a little run of
nights in the mid-upper 40's coming up. Fortunately. It
is only below 50 for a couple of hours each night , so
plants should be able to handle it okay.

im seriously considering trying some of these out for my leftover plants I didn't have room for.
I think they would be a good bet, then if there is
one you really like, you can easily OW it.

you're a bad influence. lol
Haha, Not sorry

Yeah buddy, they use water fast in the smaller pots!

The Peruvian Red Rocoto is taking off. The supported
branches are definitely turning upward, and the new
branches in the middle are growing straight up. I would
not be surprised to see the Rocoto branches growing
up into the Japanese maple by the end of the summer:
