Does it bulk up your plants more if the light is closer? I noticed mine are doing alot better since I did that. Or is it that they are receiving more of the light ?

Yes, closer means more light. it helps... helps a lot.

Optimal condition is almost touching.

Light quantity decreases by the square of the distance. i.e. if you have the lights 1 inch from the top of the plants they will get X amount of light. If you have them 2 inches from the plants you will get X/4 amount of light.
