Peppermint oil safe on plants?

I have been dealing with a mice problem in which they have been eating the foliage on my overwintered plants. I have read that they don't like the smell of peppermint and was wondering if it is safe to spray a solution of it onto the leaves? Would it even affect them? Let me know what you guys think.

we have that problem at my grandmothers house. so in the corners of the cabinets we put cotton balls that are soaked with peppermint oil. works great
