Not sure about your thoughts on pesticides, but I've had good luck with regular ol' Sevin, and also an old bottle of Chevron Diazinon after rose chafers and slugs attacked my beans, peppers, radishes, and tomatoes.  Both seem to work well against beetle-type insects.  No idea as to what it is, although I've seen them on some of my plants in the past.  Best of luck!
 
My vine crops are getting hit by squash vine borers as well. Sevin seems like a necessary evil at this point to combat all these malicious critters.
