Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

IMG_5253.jpg

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Incredible photography! So organized, it looks like a factory. Goat's Weed looks almost like a galapagoense. I think I'll have to grow the Maui Purple next year, nice looking plants.

Thanks Charles,
The Purple weed ...the Maui Purple and the Goat's Weed are both worth growing. Both ornamental looking but make for some interesting powders

OMG>.. OMG.. OMG..OMG... WOW... WOW WOW

Studdering comments also excepted........ha.

DeNNIZ, thanks for taking a look...

Wonderful update, amazing plants and nice skills behind the glass!

Thanks, the plants are moving fine, not too fast to create havoc though. I hope to start hardening them off in 6 weeks.
I've got a few camera skills from the past but this doggone pocket camera is a bit contrasty from highlight to shadowside....it makes it a challange.......which I like.

Nobody like a show off...but in your case we all make an exception Greg. Freaking wowzers! I am busy with my little grow, can't imagine dealing with pot ups on that scale!!! Amazing as always brother...hope we get some bonus shots out of you mid week this week! ;)

I'll try to sneak in some mid week "Greenery" in lieu of "St Patricks Day"...............weekend.
I had over 40 1cu' ft Promix bags in my garage 2 weeks ago. I'm down to 3, so I ran out yesteday and found some bales on sale. I'm at the point of potting up a few trays a day. The weekend is when I can catch up on the growroom cleaning and major pot ups. We lost an hour with the "time change" this weekend so it will be an hour lighter later. I'm hoping to get some outside prep work done if the weather ever gets above 60.
I'll try to find some plants that haven't been photographed yet.

Plants seem to be showing much progress, excellent updated shots as usual and I have to agree with Shane on pot ups. Normally I have a hard time thinking about doing 20 or more and then read 200+ like its no big deal, lol. You are either related to Clark Kent da farmer or have secret helpers we don't know about ;) I’ll be reading the foodie later this morning and comment there. Again great stuff Greg, always enjoy reading your glog ... I’ll leave you with a great Caribbean tune that could possibly inspire me to do dem 200+ pot ups ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪

Hey Ramon,
I can use some super helpers, but for right now its just me........
Can't wait for the warm weather and to move all the plants outside. The sun does wonders with the new growth. Some of the JA Habs are starting to bud. I'm hoping to see flowers in the next few weeks and pods by the end of June.
Today I'll try to read up on glogs that I missed since I've been awol from here for a few.
I appreciate the feedback and the music !

Hey Greg, first wanted to give yah some love for the TD win. I am not a curry person but that was the entry that I would have eaten! You can't eat the entries so I vote on ingedients, process, photography, plating.

I thought that cluster of plants was one plant for a second!!! I'm not sure a master like yourself could keep em that tight though. Everything is spot on as usual. The galapa and goat's weed have a fuzz like lamb's ear. I notice some other wilds have spikier hairs. Have a great week sir!

Thanks P-Son,
I'm still planting annuums, some of which you sent me. Whatever pubes or wilds I end up planting will be in an area that only gets 2/3 hr of direct sun, mostly reflected light with moderate shade. I had too much flower drop with my Manzanos and Roctos last year due to the intense heat. I'm hoping the 10/15 deg difference in the shade will help.

Greg, your my hero!

A "hero".....isn't that like a sub sandwich...with habaneros on it............ :stop:
Just kiddin.......lol

Love your working conditions! Plants are looking loved!
Thanks Rich,
I still manage to track some dirt on the floor, occasionally......
my wife has good eyes, she notices it...

Nice Greg, really nice update. Still learning from your glogs too but I think I missed the "How To Tease Roots Apart Tutorial" :)

and congrats again on the TD win.
Ha.........the TooterTurtle ...tutorial...lol.
Although you probably know how to separate the roots, for those that don't...it's like peeling the shell off a hard boil egg. No need to tap the top of the plant or the roots on the counter....... .......but as one would do with the egg, roll the plants roots and dirt between your hands until most to all of the dirt (eggshell ) falls into the bucket.
Then from the base of the stems separate the roots working towards the bottom, not the opposite way or the main root zone will become detached.

Its pretty easy, pepper plants are perennials and will bounce back quickly if kept alive. I dig up perinnials from my yard for early summer plant sales. The "crowns or stumps" will get spaded out of the ground and divided in my garage. I have a good knife collection for my kitchen. But I do have one of those $5 sets ...probably bought at a bar, that I use to separate and divide the roots apart. I've also used a hack saw, sawzall...etc. The roots from an established perennial thats a couple years old is actually very "wooden". As long as theres activity the plants will bounce back.............chop...chop

Bill thanks for stopping by.

Very, very impressive Greg. Have just caught up to date with you glog and will be following progress from now on.

Amazing pictures of plants and munch, will look forward to future weekend updates for sure.

Thanks
Pete

Purple Bhut Jolokia

IMG_6576.jpg

The basement grow with over 230+ 5" pots. Some plants are flowering while others are still waiting to fork out. The light cycle is still 16 on 8 off (overlapping).
Soon I'll swithch to 12/12. Which still gives plants direct light for 12 and indirect for the other 12.

Amazing as usual, Greg. The seeds you send me are popping pretty good, btw. Only have one or two varieties that are stubborn, so I'm pretty geeked about the variety of Scotch Bonnets I get to sample this year - thanks again!

I don't know what it is, but this time of year those purple plants really get me. I really loved the purple bhut pics I saw in the forums last year, so I got some seeds for this year. Your bhut reminds me why I was so excited to get some. Beautiful plant.

And then I see that huge spread of peppers... wow... I know you're selling some, but I don't remember if you said about how many plants you'll plant out this year?

Great job once again!

The purple anything is cool. I'm involved with a few plant show/sales. The same folks look for the Maui Purples, Black Olives, and anything else with variegated leaves. The Purple Bhut is pretty cool looking. Although the foliage greens up a bit outside the branching stays purple. Not as tasty as the traditional Red or as hot as the Chocolate but the contrast is well appreciated in the garden.

I'm shooting for arouind 150 plants here and another 30 to 50 elsewhere. The rest will get sold. Most people want the Sweet Peppers up to the Jalapenos.........those I run out of...........and the Cherry and San Marzano Tomatoes. Next year will be a wash-up, probably no glog and small garden. My daughters getting married in June..........I'm no "Steve Martin" but I'd like to see her off with my full attention. In the meantime I'll be filling the freezer and drying pods from this season........ha

I'm glad to hear the seeds are popping. If I gave you any Papa Joe's mkt seeds those are probably giving you trouble..........I had only 3 of 10 seeds sprout..that's it.
Andy thanks for checking this out. I'm looking forward to following your grow.

You peppers are so dumb...look at you all trying to sprout outta one hole...best part of you guys must have stayed with the bee and ended up as honey! Your mama was a mild!

Yeah, that's an honorable reason to scale back on the garden for a year. One that you won't regret. I'm sure you'll be able to freeze, dry, pickle and whatever else plenty of peppers. I'm also sure if you got hard up for fresh pods you could find a few people around here who would love to pay you back for your generosity.

Oddly enough, the Papa Joe's mkt seeds did pretty well for me, I've got 4 pots out of 4 on those. It's the TFM's, St. Marteen Marigot, and FDA yellows. I think those 3 I've gotten 1 of 4 pots to germinate. Still fairly early though, only 14 days in, so there's plenty of time. I've noticed that with situations like that I could have all of them germinated in two days, so who knows. Anyway, you sent so many awesome varieties that I'm thrilled to try. I've tried to grow a true bonnet off and on for 8-9 years and something has always thwarted me, so here's to hoping.... Along the way I discovered that I really liked the Trinidad SB's. Nice taste.

Agree with Andy 100%, great reason for not growing...I'm sure the wedding will be like a Disneyland Dream! Another Nice Mess we'll be in without you around...it'll be like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on here. I guess Pr0d will have to be like The Man with Two Brains...but Parenthood means making sure The Kids Are Alright. It's Complicated, but better to be the Father of the Bride than The Jerk!

And that's The Ugly Truth

Sorry on my phone and couldn't do the whole link thing but

Give those seeds a bit more time. I repotted some Marigots up last week and noticed a small sprout that popped next to a 3" plant. That seed might have taking over 4 weeks to germ. That's odd though, since the seeds were fresh. I brought them back from the Islands in September.Enjoy what you've planted, it will be interesting to watch how they produce in your soil and climate.

I always get a little jealous when I peruse your glog. Not enough to motivate me I'm sorry to say. Looking very nice Greg.

Small garden??????? I think "Roxanne" would be a fitting Martin movie! :liar:

Ha.............too true, forgot about that movie except for the dart board scene....can't remember it all but I knowit got me laughing

Wow saw glog for the first time and I'm amazed. Crazy setup... Anyway of getting some of those seedlings shipped to socal.?

Simply amazing,,

Sorry,
I don't ship the plants.......they wouldn't make it in the condition that I would expect to receive them. Just local sales here.

DAYum, Greg . . . as usual! Just . . . DAY-UU-UUM! aka, "Southern" for "DAYum!" Beautiful, beautiful! ;)

............... I can hear it now

I always get a little jealous when I peruse your glog. Not enough to motivate me I'm sorry to say. Looking very nice Greg.

The only thing that could motivate me futher would be some of the weather we had last year at this time.............not in the near future ,though
