PIC 1's............Pod-ography.............2013

Good Eve-ning, and Welcome to my bog...glog !

Hey folks sorry for the late glog-up I'm a month behind last years startup,...... ...... I still have 12+ weeks (plenty of time) before I can start think about hardening off the plants outdoors.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to those who followed my grow last season. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and ideas. The chuckles we shared......there were some good laughs...(and especially all the criticisms........ :liar: .......hah)

To those who are new, I try to follow a "weekend update" format with photos and captions. Although if anyone has questions or replies that needs and answer or response I'll get back during the week. I hope to keep this interesting and entertaining...

and away we go!

Garden Rewind

scan0001.jpg

Here's my 1st garden (1986)...it was modest but what we grew we used in our kitchen. I had a couple of dual bulb 4ft T12 fixtures in my basement. A couple grow-lux and daylight color temp bulbs. The indoor grow was far superior to the vegetable starts sold at the local nurseries.
My Italian neighbor couldn't understand why his bell pepper starts only had flowers while mine had golfball size peppers very early in the season.....The hot varieties I grew back then were the cayennes, orange habaneros, and a few different type or thai-birds. Things have changed but I still grow those varities.

IMG_1796.jpg

Here's a shot from last season. I grew around 150+ pepper plants in two different sections of the garden. Plants were grown in raised beds and containers from 5 gal up to 20 gal

IMG_1763.jpg

A typical weekend harvest shot from later in the season when the gardens at full swing.

This is one of my seed catalogs, the c.chinense....the seeds that invade our gardens every year...
This book and other seed catalogs are kept in a tupperware container container on a shelve in the corner of the basement.
No elaborate system needed, The seeds are kept in 1.5" zip backs. I have seeds that are as far back as 2007, and still germinating without a hitch....theres no need to pitch. Speaking of pitching theres some old baseball card to display the size of the pages used.

IMG_5217.jpg

These are what I use to get the seeds on their way. I take 1/4 bag of each, mix that into a 5 gal bucket and moisten with water. The spagnum peat give fluff to the texture also helps indicate when the mix need to be re-moistened but the lighter color it displays. The vermiclite helps with water retension while letting the air and moisture through. The seed starting mix also has fine grain perlite to keep drainage and airflow moving.

IMG_5165.jpg

Ha..........I knew this chop stick would come in handy someday. Once the seed medium is moistened I'll make a hole with the stick 1/4" down .
The seeds will be planted at the same depth. That helps when misting the top with water. Seeds that are planted too high may dry out or seeds planted to deep may rot.

IMG_5099.jpg

I use two 2ft x 4ft germinating mats. Enough area to warm 8 seed flats at once...

IMG_5246.jpg

I don't bother with a thermostat for the mats. I run them through a timer, 2 hrs on, 1 hr off...continous. The average temp of the soil stays at +/-85 deg

IMG_5101.jpg

This is the main grow room. I built the 2 tier shelving units 8ft long x 2ft wide. 8 flats fit underneath the lighting units. Here we have four narrow spaced T8 4 bulb fixtures with 6500k bulbs and one 8ft TF twin bulb tight spaced fixture with 4100k bulbs. I have 4 identical systems in the room with an addition of three 400w mh fixtures with 7200k lamps. The room has 2- 20a dedicated circuits and 1-15a to split the current draw..

more photos in a few minutes....thanks for looking!

Bonnet x Brain looks interesting, funny how sometimes the F2 can look like the F1 even though there's supposed to be more variation there...
You're right Charles,
I'll have to shoot a picture of the plant and the current pods next update....most are growing similar

What rootstock are you using for your tomato grafts? Want to try next season. Was just looking on johnny's select.
I woukd kill for that kind of tomato fruit set. To hot and humid in DC for bumper crops. Peppers do great though :)

Rootstock seeds were the Maxifort...sample pack from either Johnny's or Harris...don't remember which. I usually get seeds and plants from different companies to grow out. All I have to do is fill out the questionaire after the season and mail it back. A lot of what I receive is the "not for sale"..yet, and the new All American varieties.

Great pics/plants Greg. Looks like you are in that transition period before the big kaboom. The newer pods on my Bahamian Goat peppers are taking on that exact shape. They are a bit smaller than some of the other Bonnets I am growing. I have some TFM's that are the size of a lemon!

Your spelling is correct as far as I know. I always have seen it spelled Zanahoria Triangulo. What do you think of the du para. The flavor hangs around for a couple days it seems like. It's definitely one to taste all by itself when testing pods.

I checked in on the fried rav thread last night, liked how you worked the powder into the dough. That pasta machine really brought back memories. Spent many hours helping my Grandma/Mom crank one of those. We used to do them with meat/greens. Fork crimped the edges on thousands of those! That is back when families still gathered on Sundays.
I'm waiting for the bang to happen.......this season is a late bloomer-kaboomer. I have one of your Indian Carbons and Primo's side by side. Both plants are almost 4ft and just starting to flower up. Plants will probably be 5ft tall plus ....until the pods weigh the branches back down.

My Bahamian Goats not only range in shape and size but the unripe pods on different plants have light green and dark green pods. The taste is the same with all. I have 4 different seed sources, which I will narrow down for future seed stock.

My TFM's are also getting pretty large...golf ball size..................Four

Ok, thanks, the Zanahoria was one word I didn't misspell last night....hah. It's the Triangulo I forgot to add

Thanks for the comments on the Ravioli.......

Looking great as always Greg!  Slightly different on the UBSC.....LOL!  How many of the Purple Bhut X UBSC plants turned purple??  I have only one growing (it is just a seedling) but it is definitely green.  I got the seeds from Brandon.

Also, that Yellow Brain X Yellow Bonnet is awesome looking. Great cross!

Amazing updates Greg. Your plants are shaping up nice and i'm sure some of the slow starts will start kicking it to high gear VERY soon. Very jealous of your San Marzano, out of all my tomatoes, that is the only one that isn't producing this season (need to take it out this weekend since it doesn't seem to want to come back a case of BER) :(

I really love the fried ravioli thread, i've been meaning to buy a good pasta machine to start making fresh pasta. Your thread inspired me to get it sooner!
Thanks,
I'm looking at Sept at being the big producing month. So far I've been bringing in a large bowls worth of pods each week. That's not including the annuum varieties...Jalps, Serrano's..etc.

I'm happy with the San Marzano's this season especially with the grafts. No BER so far....as in the past.

A pasta machine is what it is. The hand cranks work well but there are the motorized self contained units and the add on's that fit the Kitchenaid mixers. I have a few different cutters to use with it for Linguine, Fettucini and Angel Hair pasta's. But you can easily just make the best fresh "Lasagna" noodles with it. Spice it up with chili powder, cheese or even spinach...right in the dough.

Good luck with your decision...remember it's not homemade pasta until you get the broom out and sweep the flour off the floor !

Both UBSC plants are producing different shape pods. I haven't tried one yet, but I'm bringing up a variety of pods to a local bar this Thursday with some Salsa Verde. I'll have to check out what the other folks bring up. The seeds from the UBSC were from Brandon, also.
I have 3 Purple Bhut x Naga Viper......not UBSC. One plant is completely green. another one is lite purple variegated...no pods yet. The 3rd is pretty dark purple with tainted green variegated leaves. Seeds from Brandon also

Wow Greg!

Fantastic update!

I'm seriously impressed with your up north grow!

Great variety, and impressive production!

Gotta come back and view the Rav's, my heritage demands it!

This is one of 3 Purple Bhut Jolokia's x Naga Viper plants that I'm growing. If anyone remembers early in the glog I had 3 seedlings together in an insert. This plant was the green seedling. All the pods on this plant look the same. Tubular with a tail.
First off, amazing as usual. You've got so many pods coming and such an incredible variety.

This is a crazy looking pod shape, pretty cool. Any idea what the color will be?  Interesting.

Hey Andy,
All the pods on that plant are tubular looking. I'm assuming since both the Purple Bhut and the Naga Viper ripen red then this one should also. Two out of the 3 crosses have pods. The other plant has almost black looking fruit. The 3rd which only has flowers has lighter purple leaves. I'm curious to see if the pods start out black, purple or varigated green.

Great update again, Greg. There's not a single plant that looks neglected and I can only imagine the time this costs! It's interesting to see your grow of your Scotch Bonnet Yellow x 7-Pot Brainstrain Yellow F1 cross. My plants have just started to set pods and their shape is totally different then yours. Also gnarly but with stingers, as soon as they are a bit bigger I will take a picture but so far I really like the shape of it :D

Thanks Jerry,
A great time, as usual. It's fun to get back into "raw" fresh super-hots. A couple of those pods really lit me up. It doesn't matter that I use hot sauce and cook with fresh and dryed pods every day, there's something about eating fresh Naga's and 7 Pots that takes me time time build up a tolerance...if thats even possible....lol
I'll post a few photo's tonight, I took a couple photos of your plants out at the beer garden.

I've gotten way behind on keeping up with glogs.  I read this one in reverse order back to picture update on 7/29, getting more excited by what I was reading all the way.  The pictures do not disappoint.  So many wonderful pods and crosses.  Does that "Pimenta Elisir" ripen to red or does it stay dark like that?  Have you tasted one yet?

  Hey Stefan,
You're right the F1 Bonnet x Brain put out different pods than my F2.
I believe I also sent out seeds to 2 others here besides yourself, I'm  not sure if either has planted them. Here's a photo of my F1 which I started indoors. This photo was taken 1st week in Feb.

This plant put out 3 ripe Bonnet shaped pods indoors. I saved the seeds from the best pod and started the seedlings late Feb. The F1 grew too large inside and I didn't want to devote one of my metal halides just for that plant. I ended up taking a clone from the best branch and have that growing outdoors. Here that is...

Here's the clone from the F1. It started out slow but now its starting to pod up. The pods are taking the Bonnet shape.....just as the "Mother" plant did indoors.

and one of the pods on the clone, starting out with the Bonnet shape......but will get a bit Brain-ee as it grows.

Here's the F2, the plant is putting out mixed pods still showing the Bonnet form but really getting bumpy like the Brain.
Futher down the road I'll pick out a branch to isolate for the F3.

3 pods off the F2. All kinds of shapes here.

 Avenir pods starting to ripen

Fatalii x Red Savina starting to load up

Purple Bhut Jolokia

a couple of "Big Sun" Habs

Just one bump needed for a few more shots...thanks

Cool, thanks...

a shot from yesterday, I just pulled these off the grill. Tomatillos, Onions, Garlic, Poblanos, Jalapenos, Hatch, Serranos, and Pegranos. I peeled the charred skins off the peppers and garlic, put everthing in the Vitamix with a bit of olive oil, lime juice, cilantro, salt and black pepper.  Puse until semi-smooth.

Here's the finished "Salsa Verde" with some freshly picked pods. Thursday night is "Pepperology" at "An Seanachi" a local pub just outside Chicago. Last night was the 1st get together. There's a group of us that bring in the gear that we grow and occasionally some tid bits to eat. It's still early in the season here, but as the gardens pick up there becomes a huge interest in checking out the latest heat. Last year we had folks travel in from the burbs to check out the happenings. I enjoy meeting new people and talking pepper "shop"...

The beer garden even has some pepper plants......I know pods from  these will get incorporated into the kitchen here. I've had their hand made Bhut Jolokia Burgers......yum

a Chocolate Bhut.........."I'll take my Burger medium rare".......Oh and just half of that Bhut will do........... :fireball:

Thanks for checking this short update out.....see y'all next week !

I had to catch up and it was spectacular to do so! So much diversity in your garden. Love the foodie shots too! You cook your eggs (on top of the other stuff) just like I do when Make one of my spinach dishes.

Those brain/bonnets look awesome. Nice work! Dorset Naga's look like a prolific variety. Black naga is my favorite of the Naga family so far but I'm yet to try a Dorset and I also have some of Cmpman1974's Not Black Naga Mean Red Cross that grow huge wicked pods. They are a close second. Naga's....yummmmmmm.

I know what you mean about the wilds. They just seem to grow differently than the rest. I love it.

Can't wait for the next update!

Awesome Pods Greg!!.  I am insanely jealous of the fact you have a beer garden at a local pub who grow chilli's !!  But I imagine there is some bravado occasionally where the odd pod may go missing to an inebriated punter?? Yes??  Anyway Greg thanks for sharing the latest from your slice of the chilli world (underworld?? ) always a pleasure to step in for a look around

Ahem...just sayin I'm an F3 Bonnet/Brain kinda guy...not HINT intended there! Greg brother...I was all hung up on them pods until you hit me with that Verde! BAM! You hit me right in my hunger pains...then a left hook to the salivary glands with all that Choco-Bhut-Burger talk at the end!Ka-Pow!!! I hope one day I can attend the Chi-Town Pepperology for the food and pepperheads, but more to meet the kingpin of cool in the pepper world face to face!
