container plant sizes and container sizes...

I was filling some 5 gallon jugs of RO water today and across the street is a palm tree nursery that has about 10,000 or more black nursery containers of all sizes stacked up. Spoke to a gentleman and told him about my peppers and offered to buy some used containers and he said have a few so I filled the back of my wifes SUV up. Saltwater fish in new water and about doubled the size of my garden this afternoon. I should have a little over 200 peppers in containers this summer. Garden just seems to get bigger every year when will it end!?! I'd put the 7 Pod in the biggest container then the Bhut Jolokia or Scorpion next.

Nice score PRF.

I've found it pretty hard to find nursery pots here. All the prices you guys are quoting would be great. $54 for 50 5 gallon pots? I wish I could find that!, Even ordering online, I can't find any suppliers in Canada. The only ones I can find are at Rona...$3.50 for 3 gallon and $10 for 5 gallon. Pretty steep when you're trying to score a bunch of them. I'm going to have to get creative and storm some smaller nursery's I think.

I thought of ordering from US but I'm afraid of what the extra border charges would be.

I know that the site I quoted ships to Canada, so you could always call them and ask about the cost of shipping across the border. Out of curiosity I checked the shipping to Barrie, Ontario and according to the shipping estimator it was about $40. That would be about $95 for 50 pots or about $1.90 a pot. Definately better than $10 each.;) Might be worth looking into.

Thanks Jacob. Even with the shipping charges, it's definitely cheaper, but I know there's brokerage charges on top of that at the border....just not sure how much it would be. If it's only $20 or something then I'd be on board in a second. I'll look into your link. Thanks again.

I am in luck so I think...my local nursery has used heavy duty 7 and 10 gallon containers for 2 and 3 bucks each....and just as luck would have it, I saw 4 6.5 gallon buckets today on the way to the nursery by the interstate, stopped, picked them up and noticed one of them had contained chipolte pepper mash....thats gotta be a sign...

Picked up ten used nursery pots at a local nursery today for 50 cents each....they are a little rough, but I cleaned and sanitized them and they should work fine for Bhut and Red Carribeans..

AJ....Since I am in a similar climate to you, what are your thoughts on BLACK nursery pots in the Florida sun? Too much heat for the roots? Should I wrap the pots in foil to reflect some heat??

Thanks all...

the afternoon sun here is the absolute killer...the contianers that get this afternoon sun are shaded by: grass that has grown around them and I have not weedeated, 1X12 lumber I have laying around stood up against the containers to block the sun..just really anything to block the sun...I don't worry about it until July though

some people paint their containers white

Silver_Surfer those are low priced for sure , but I used some like those before and I didn't think they were very strong. The walls are thin , some thinner than others in the same group. I don't think they'd last but a season or two . That may be enough for some folks.

I can find used 5 gal pots at my local nursery fairly cheap. Some are fugly and beat up a little , but they're thick plastic jobs and should last for years. And yes you need to clean them up. All are black or dark green.

AJ & a few others got me thinking about a dark color might not be so great . So I ran a search on 5 gal white buckets ..... at several places I found 6 gal white jobs too. MAN ...... every place I found sure wants a lot for that extra 1 gal of space . The price doubles at times .

At one place .... http://www.usplastic.com 5 gal buckets were $3.21 each with 15% off over 20. But then they jumped to $7.75 each with 15% off over 16 . Even the 5 gal ones are pricey but if you only needed a few or a dozen or so and could foot the price they should last 'till 2014 ...... And if bought a few every year it wouldn't hurt as bad .... at least all at ounce .......

Has anyone run across better prices ??

Peace,
P. Dreadie

Thanks Silver_Surfer , Lowes does seem a better price , but they're not white ..... so will grey get half as hot in the sun as black ... ??

Peace ,
P. Dreadie

Every Costco, Sam's, Walmart, or any large scale bakery will throw away white NSF 5 gallon buckets. I score all of mine at Costco. All you have to do is ask

Silver_Surfer ,

I picked up several buckets from Lowes yesterday. They are grey but very shinny, almost silver looking. I won't know until the summer heat and after I compare with my other buckets , but these may reflect the sunlight and not get as hot.

Peace,
P. Dreadie
