However, the point of tasting the seeds beforehand could still be helpful, assuming that they aren't sterilized or whatever is done to commercial seeds. The hardware store seeds are tasteless.

I've just found that reaper seeds, in my experience, haven't been as hot as any part of a fresh reaper. Though, I've only tried that with a couple different supers.
 
I have tasted as control , another seeds from another type peper lightly hot, and I have felt the heat...
 
With the fake ones I have felt only a light taste of peper.
