Poypoy's 2014 Grow Log - Flowers and Round 2 Sown

Last night I started my Pubescens so I thought it was about time to get things rolling again here.  This is what I started:

Brown Rocoto
Cherry Rocoto
Giant Mexican Rocoto
Rocoto CAP 217
Red Rocoto
Yellow Rocoto
Manzano (from Smokemaster)

I did cheat the season a little bit and started some Scotch Bonnets, Goat Peppers, and MOA's a few months ago.  I just looked and my pictures are from a month ago but I can still give you a little pepper plant porn :)

I am going to start with the one plant that is a little bit sickly, just to get it out of the way.

The only reason I haven't chopped it is I want to make sure I get some early season MOA's.

And all of them together.

I still haven't made up a list of what I want to grow this year.  There are quite a few Baccatums that I am going to grow that are replacing something else but I am not sure what.  I suppose I should really have a plan before I start the Chinense's and Baccatums next month.

I will try and post some updated pictures in the next day or so.

Editing to add not sure what is going on with my photobucket, I will see if I can figure it out.

Thanks!  They do love the fish tank water.

Wow your really ahead of the game. Nice!

The hard part will be whittling down my list to 60 or so varieties.  If that.  I think I am going to grow more multiples this year (ie 10 scotch bonnet plants instead of 10 different varieties).  We'll see, so hard to cut plants out.

I have the same problem. I plant 2-3 seeds per cell and when all 3 pop I am like Hmmm....Thin out them or save all 3 and usually put all three in transplant and I end up with 3 times what I wanted but since I have room 2,000 or 6,000 all the same for me!!

I can squeeze 80 in or so depending on how I utilize my space.  I still have gallons of peppers in the freezer so I am sure my wife will want me to save less.   Either way I need to find a new way to freeze them that doesn't make my whole freezer smell like peppers.

Wow, that's massive!
Good luck!

My wife thinks I am crazy with my seed collection, but it pales in comparison to some of the others on this forum.  I am sitting around 130 varieties to choose from but quite a lot I wouldn't grow again for personal use.

Well most of the Pubescens have at least started to pop, plus I needed to get some current pictures of my Bahamian Goats and Scotch Bonnets.  Just a short update as I only have 4 pictures to post.

These three strapping young lads are my Bahamian Goat Peppers.  I will be starting more with the chinenses next month (same with the scotch bonnets).  They seem pretty happy and are doing well.

The one on the right is the Jamaican Yellow Scotch Bonnet, while the other two are my MOA's.  Looking forward to trying these side by side.

Frontal view of my pubescens popping.  The only ones that haven't started to pop are the Cherry Rocoto and the Giant Mexican Rocoto.

Side view of the pubescens.  The Red Rocoto there was the first to pop at 5 days, a few on the 6th day, and the rest on the 7th day.  I was very surprised, I expected them to take much longer to germinate from what everyone was saying.  This is my first year growing any pubescens.

I popped in to my work room to take pictures of my over-winters but I have been neglecting them and they weren't worthy of a picture.  I will try tomorrow after they drink a little and perk up.

Just a quick update.  Some of the plants are starting to flower and the pubescens are mostly up.  Some of them aren't going to make it as they couldn't shed their seed coats.  I tried operating on a few but they didn't really survive the procedure :)

The babies.

I still haven't hit them with any sort of nutes (either the plants or the seedlings).  I will probably give them a spray down of epsom salts this week, and then give them some fish water the next time I water them this week.  The first set of true leaves are starting to come up on the some of the seedlings, so I will probably pot them up next week.

Your plants in the 1 gal (?) containers are getting to be a nice size and will be ready for plantout in a few months. The pubes are sprouting nicely...some folks seem to have germinating problems with those...

A foliar feed of Epsom salts helps dearly indoors especially with the young plants with the small root zones. I try not to saturate the soil with chemicals with plants growing in less than 1 gal containers. Fish Emulsion also promotes healthy growth when Nitrogen is lacking .

Ha...I know what you mean by having gallons of peppers in the freezer.

Once I pot up the seedlings I will put the ones that haven't sprouted back on the heat mat and under the humidity dome.  We'll see if anything comes of it.  I do use fish emulsion when I am running low on water from my fish tank.  With only a few plants I have plenty of water sitting there.

Time for a much belated update.

I sowed my Baccatums, Chinense, a Frutescen, and a few more pubes Saturday.  The annuums will be sown around the 1st of April.  This is what I planted:

Another shot of the back one.

My only concern is I have to head out of town next week.  Most of the seeds will have sprouted by then, hopefully I can give them a big enough drink where the wife won't have to intervene while I am gone.  Makes her nervous when I count on her to keep things alive.

Sowed my last round of peppers last night.  Mostly annuums but also some of the chinense I just acquired from the conservatory.  Resowed 2 baccatums that I keep managing to kill, 3rd times the charm.

And finally my fastest growing Rocoto.

I really need to take the time and pot up my little seedlings or I risk killing them off.  It is a fine line trying to keep the little cells at the proper level of moisture.

Very sturdy looking plants...just a thought on the seedlings, if you're away for a few days you might want to move them away from the light or any other heat source. I'd bottom water the trays with enough water..maybe 1/3 way up. If the seeds are damp the hulls will open and the roots will travel down. The top of the medium can remain dry.

Thanks!  I didn't think about removing them from the lights when I need to be away, great tip.

Nice list and updates... :)

Thanks Penny :)

Wow, took me a while to find this.  I didn't realize it has been since April without an update.

First up is a bahamian goat pepper, but I am thinking it is just a yellow scotch bonnet.  The first one I ate was yellow instead of orange and did not have the "peach" interior it was supposed to.  Plus it tasted like a scotch bonnet :P

Then a Fresno.  It has been a few years since I grew them, I forgot they grew upright.

Everything is way behind again this year with all the rain we had May and June.  I am just starting to get some ripe tomatoes and peppers, but hardly any peppers so far.   Some don't have any fruit yet and a few hardly have any flowers.  Hopefully it is a late frost so I can get some from each variety.  There were a lot of new to me or first time growing plants this year.
