Praying Mantis Egg Cases

… I've bought Ladybugs before and will probably do the same this year. Bad thing about them is they tend to fly away. …
I agree and while I’ve not bought them, I regularly see them around my plants and then for days they’re gone. Eventually I'll see a few back but not too many at one time. While I have seen them procreate, eat and return, they're in low numbers. I’m not sure they get everything there is to eat of the bad bugs. I guess they have too many options and as you say with wings they can move along or be gone for good …

Things in my area sure have changed from when I was a youth . Besides the air not being as clean and I'll never see 50 cent a gallon gas , I use to see Horned Toads , Lady bugs , and the Pray Mantis , and all kinds of creatures that no longer seem to be around.

Peace,
P.Dreadie
Careful you’re dating your self ;) lol, … I also use to see a lot of Mantis as a youth and don't see them now. That said, I was talking to an old FL cracker the other day mentioning this and he told me the Everglades are full of Mantis and egg sacks, dis brought a sparkle back to my eye … long live da Mantis mon \o/

BTW how long do they stay on your plant? Or will they move onto other plants bushes as they've eliminated their bug food supply and do they eventually take off hunting more bugs leaving your pepper plants unprotected?

Wow !! Thanks for all the info folks !!

As said above ... I like the Mantis because they eat more and when they get larger they can munch on larger pests. I've bought Ladybugs before and will probably do the same this year. Bad thing about them is they tend to fly away. So later in the summer I don't see them .

Peace,
P.Dreadie
You can buy little houses for them with ladybug lure. It does work for the most part as long as bees, wasps or hornets do not take over and make a nest. I must have had a few hundred hatch in my yard last year. They seem to love my apple tree.

Walkgood after hatching they scatter like crazy. The bigger ones start eating the smaller ones. Then the number thins and I'd find them in different parts of my garden. They moved around from plant to plant. I'd see them all summer long. They were fun to watch too.

I have no problem keeping ladybugs. Every November once it starts to get cold, I get anywhere from 2 to 6 of them in my room each night. Perhaps I myself can make a small profit selling them, lol.

Actually that brings up a question, is there a way I can just keep ladybugs alive indoors, like get a small terrarium and put some things in it to keep it a captive community? Obviously you guys know a bit more than me on this topic.

Side note, Chris I PM'ed you yesterday I believe.

True, well, we already have a bunch of fruit flies around our dining room. My brother brought in one of our handful of baby avocado trees since the leaves were going brown in the shed from the cold, and the gnats are just gallavanting on the surface of the dirt, so they're welcome to be around, I'd rather have ladybugs flying around than fruit flies anyway. Seems to be the more aesthetically pleasing infestation, lol.

Also, I forgot that they were predators and not herbivores, thanks for helping me through that brain fart. :P
