Pro-Mix too expensive

I called the feed & seed store that I bought my pro-mix from this spring.
It was 32.99, now they want 37.99. I called another feed store and they
want 49.99. What a rip off. I do like the pro-mix, but I did fine without
before and it looks like I'll be doing without it again. I may try to make
my own. I know it's peat moss, lime and vermiculite. It just wont have
the BX part of it. Just a little venting here. :mad:

That last price of 49 bucks is crazy.!
Especially when it's mostly peat, gypsum and perlite with some composted material.
You could do cheaper by mixing your own...

i make my own promix, its pretty damn easy. 3 5gal buckets of peat, 1 5gal bucket coarse perlite, 1 12oz cup of lime, then i wet it all down with a product i forget the name of... its 90% alkylphenol ethoxylate

its pretty much identical to promix hp except the perlite is a different size

ah i found it. this is what i use. got this stuff at a local feed and seed place, i use 40ml per gallon, and like 3 gallons to wet a wheelbarrow full of counterfeit promix.

Don't forget about the vermiculite and the Dolomitic and Calcitic limestone. There is no composted material, it is a soilless mix. There is also no gypsum
 
I use this and love it, if ya have a lowes around ya. 10 bucks for the 2 cy ft bag. It has a nice pine bark in the mix, but I like to add a lil more pearlite for an in the pot mix.

i have an irrelevant question for you guys... in your experience does the price of peat fall during the winter months? lowes has 3 cubic foot bales of peat... lots of it sitting on pallets at the store near me, and im wondering if i should wait for it to drop in price... or just pay the 13 bucks.

A bale of Premier Peat usually runs around 10 bucks for a 3.8cu

not down here, a 3.8 premier bail is like 22 bucks. lowes and HD have the best deals on peat. i doubt its the same quality, but its almost half the price.

oh and promix is 44 bucks here!

I Really like that Junglegrowth I add some Organic cow sh#t compost to it and it works just fine!!!

Question, what does this do? The link says it is a
surfactant. Isn't that for a topical use? Still learning, so that is why I am asking.
The fruit would not be organic if using this, correct?

Also would love to read what others use for their mix. Looking for a thread on that, sure there is one already.

Its basically a surfactant that will not damage the plant like a detergent will. yea you typically use this when spraying insecticides/pesticides to get a real nice application, but it works as a soil wetting agent as well. i heard somewhere that you can use jet dry as a wetting agent? i really dont know i haven't looked into that.

try pouring water into a cup of untreated peat... its remarkably hydrophobic,the peat will actually float on top of the water.
 
I used Lambert LM-3 peat moss mix 3.8 ft^3 bail at $24.99 per. Next year I'll be able to buy it at wholesale. This stuff rocks, my supers grew huge and yields were terrific. I will continue to use this mix in the future until I can find something better and cheaper.

I bought a super-bale of Lamberts really cheap last year. I have to see if I can get another one or two this year. Faffard is another good brand that is always cheaper than pro-mix
 
I grow most of mine in the ground, so I don't really use too much. Theres a horse farm that will load my trailer, so i usually get 2 yards to top off the beds. hell its free, and they load it too.
