Pulpiteer's grow log 2012

I thought I'd do a grow log this year, since I've enjoyed reading the ones that other folks do. I'm up in Michigan and last year was able to get the plants in the garden in mid-May, but that isn't a sure thing. I'm starting a bit early, but I want the plants to be a good size when I do get them in, so that I don't have to wait until later in the Fall to harvest. If we would've had an early frost last year, I would've been in trouble. The grow log puts a bit of pressure on. If this is a tremendous failure, then it'll be public. I've been gardening for awhile, and had great luck with my peppers last year, but I'm taking a giant step up this year, so we'll see.

Here is my grow list:
1. Douglah x4 Ajijoe
2. Scotch Bonnet (Y) x4 Pepperjoe.com
3. Cherry Bomb x4 Farmers market
4. Bhut Jolokia ® x4 Dshlogg
5. Trinidad Scorpion (Red)x6 Ajijoe
6. Trinidad Scropion (Peach) x6 Ajijoe
7. Chocolate Congo Habanero x6 Ajijoe
8. Caribbean Red Habanero x6 Ajijoe
9. Aji Pineapple x4 Ajijoe
10. Peach Bhut Jolokia x6 Ajijoe
11. Naga Morich x4 Dshlogg
12. Scotch Bonnet (Y)x8 Refining Fire
13. Jamaican Red Mushroom x8 Refining Fire
14. Jamaican Chocolate Habanero x8 Refining Fire
15. Thai Dragon x4 Dshlogg
16. 7 Pot (Yellow) x4 Masschilehead
17. Avery Island Tobasco x4 Masschilehead
18. Aji Limon x4 Dshlogg
19. Devil's Tongue x4 Dshlogg
20. Fatali x6 Totally Tomato
21. Red Rocoto x6 Totally Tomato
22. Scotch Bonnet (Red)x4 Hotstuff
23. Jalapeno x4 Dshlogg
24. Bell (various) x20 (I'll buy the plants in the spring)

This website has been tremendously helpful. After some contact with MJDiamond83, I ordered some CFL bulbs. They are 100 watt bulbs that put out the equivalent of 400 watts of light, 6500 on the light temperature, I believe. I get a shelving unit on sale last year from Lowes, some pvc this year from Menards and ordered some mylar emergency blankets off of Amazon (10 for $8) and put up a cheap frame that gives me two levels, with the CFL on top and some florescent strip lights on the bottom. With the lights on, it gets to about 84, and with them off its in the mid 70's. I hope that's enough to get the seeds to pop.

Here's a shot where you can see the three lights and the mylar around the three sides. For the front cover I just have a mylar sheet that drapes down and it's all basically enclosed.
growroom1.jpg

Here's a shot of everything planted. For the most part I have at least two seeds in each cell, sometimes a few more than that. I figure I can cut down if I have too many that germinate.

Ok, so I got a care package from Jamie - "Romy6" on Saturday and it was awesome! Here it is:

In order: top - yellow scorp, red bhut, choc. bhut, aji lemon (2), red 7 pot (2), brain strain (2), bhut hybrid (2)
bottom - datil (2), yellow 7, sweet venetian habs (2), dorset naga, mystery pepper
Along with that he sent 2 powders and some seeds - all in all, a wonderful gift of awesomeness!

And now for your pleasure (or not) video evidence of my pain as I attempted to defeat the Brain Strain.

So, this is my second superhot ever (aside from throwing them in burgers or chili. And my first one this year. I still haven't gotten used to raw pods this year, and I payed the price for it. Regardless, the Brain Strain is ridiculous. Now for Paul to video his attempt ;)

Great job pulpit! I have eaten 2 of them...b-cause one wasn't enough. I don't like the flavor either, the Barrackpore tastes even worse...and is just as painful. The only identifiable flavor to me was an overpowering chinense flavor at the beginning then just yuck. I am going to try using mine in some sauces and powders to add heat. I think once diluted with other flavors they could be good. I have another one in the fridge and really don't wanna eat that one...but I probably will.

Every time I eat a superhot I lose my sense of taste for a few days you? Tums helps the stomach. I may try taking some BEFORE I eat my next one!

"Daddy, is it hot?"

You did well man!

Yeah, I don't know about doing well. I survived, which does count for something. Funny thing is I don't remember my son asking me that. I was already in so much pain I wasn't really thinking well.

Jamie has been sporting the nation! Good job pulp, I have yet to eat a full pod of a super.

Thanks, and that may simply be a sign of your superior intelligence Pr0digal. But they'll call out to you with their siren song...

Thanks - you know, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice... so I'm not sure what eating two says. Glad that someone else shares my view on their taste. I wasn't sure if I was missing something through pure pain, which was very possible. I am curious what flavor they would add apart from adding pure head. I don't think I care for ghost peppers much, that is until you put them in a hamburger, then I really like it. So the correct use can make all the difference. I did not lose my sense of taste, although I was afraid of something bad happening with my ears. As it turned out my throat just hurt for a long time.

Here is a Chinese 5 Color (Aji Joe) and you can see two things: the pepper and the scorched leaves from adjusting to the outside. Overall that plant is doing well.

5color.jpg

Hey, that looks pretty similar to a plant I got from AjiJoe in the mystery mix!

I'm just getting here to look at what you've got going, so I don't know if it is the same, but if it is, the one I planted started purple, went to green while under the lights/window, and then went right back to purple as soon as I planted it outside.

I'm digging the full yard garden. I'd totally do the same in your situation, but I am relegated to a 6x12ft apartment garden. Oh well...

oooh ho ho ho! Preacher man!! That was an awesome video! i loved the "wrap up" from hours afterward. I bet you are very entertaining on a sunday morning :) I hope there is a second installment of your pod test vids!

:hot: That is an amazing video Andy. You are a very brave man. I don't think they can get any hotter than that :hot:

. Believe it or not you may learn to like them one day. I know I said the same thing. Tatstes like dirt and the pain isn't worth it. The wife and I eat them quite often now but never raw . They actually take on a whole different form( flavor) dried or cooked. And it doesn't take much to spice up a meal. :fireball: Glad you enjoyed ( NOT ) the Brain ;)

Take the other Brain and cook it on the grill with some maters, garlic, fresh herbs and olive oil.Cook it till it is almost blackened . Mix it in with some rice and or noodles and tell me what you think.

Nice job, Andy! Those are without a doubt the hottest I've ever tried, and that one was one that I only ate half of, and got a worse stomach ache than a whole Bhut Jolokia/Naga Morich/Trinidad Scorpion! I thought the flavor was okay, but the astounding level of capsaicin was definitely the party pooper, adding that bitterness that spoiled it a bit for me. That and the feeling like I was being run through with a spear in my guts! I love your son's question "Is it hot, Daddy?" Is that the one who loves the Brain Strain plant? If he knows how hot they are now, maybe he won't care for it as much, haha!

Anyway, cool to see a test from you for a change of pace!

Yeah, Jamie rocks! Singlehandedly turning the nation into chileheads!
Your video was great! Wow, hot. I'm not sure my 66-year-old stomach
can handle that kind of onslaught, without some kind of buffer. Your right
about the milk, about 1 or 2 seconds of relief! I've actually found that red
wine (Spanish tinto, of course) goes pretty well with the peppers. I can
actually have a sip and still taste it a little. Doesn't help the burn much,
but the acidity in the wine makes the heat somehow more bearable in my
imagination. For about 3 seconds!

Awesome, bro! Love the way you have developed your grow.

CHAMP....CHAMP....CHAMP....CHAMP....

I love it! "I was thinking what you could use this for...Poison!" BWAHAHAHA! I can say that because I have been in your shoes. Just think, you have more than a few of those in your garden.....Forget the next 5 minutes, think the next 5 MONTHS! Our wives were on the same wavelength, when I ate the Assam Indian Carbon, she was like, "Hospital???"

I think the same thing EVERY time I eat something crazy hot....what in the world am I doing and why in the world did I decide to grow these little thinks from the center of the earth? I think the route I am gonna take is to give A TON away to spread the heat, and with the other hundred pounds I am gonna dry, powder, and flake. Then once I do that I plan on experimenting with different mixes and bringing in other spices.

There are plenty of uses for those things...Just wait for the Douglah!

Great Job Andy!

Hey Andy-
Man it is hard to keep up now!!! Lookin really good, and you can't have too much basil!!As to your garden,...hehe  ...I'm gonna take Jamie's suggestion about showing the wife +10 for that idea. I hope you put the REALLY hot ones by the edges near the side walk...that'll keep the snatching to a minimum    !

Pulpiteer,
Great grow list and germination %'s.
Obvioously you are doing something right.
Nice job.
I'm thrilled to see my seeds had a 100% germination rate.
Thanks for being a customer.
Pepper Joe

Man it's been a rough few weeks here, sorry I've been off on the updates. I've been away at a denominational conference and have had some deaths in the congregation - the second of which has been very tough. Alright, some responses, then hopefully an update soon...

Thanks for stopping in! That one is the chinese 5 color, so if the peppers go through a series of 5 colors you've got a winner. I also got a regal black from Aji Joe that has dark leaves and purple peppers, but those peppers are smaller and change from purple to a dark red (I believe). Anyway, they are pretty plants. Sorry to hear about the apartment garden - I am enjoying the extra garden space this year. If only you could convince your apartment owner people that gardens are better for everyone than grass anyway.

oooh ho ho ho! Preacher man!! That was an awesome video! i loved the "wrap up" from hours afterward. I bet you are very entertaining on a sunday morning :) I hope there is a second installment of your pod test vids!

Thanks Brit! I hope to get a second installment as well. Like I said it's been hectic and tough around here the last little bit. Glad you enjoyed the vid!

I've got to try that with the Brain Strain, soon. I've just been waiting until I don't have something major the next day just in case my stomach is off. Not that a brain strain would ever do that...
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks again for the peppers!

Hey Karl - yeah, that's my son who loves the Brain Strain plant. He thought he was hilarious just being on the video, so the fact that daddy was being tortured did not phase him a bit. My second child has been a little more concerned, however. Bless her heart. I'll have to leave her more in the will.

I'm going to have to try the Brain as Jamie suggests to see if that redeems the taste. Otherwise, I'm not sure how to use them.

Yeah, Jamie rocks! Singlehandedly turning the nation into chileheads!

Thanks Paul! I guess I found out that my 37 year old stomach couldn't handle it either, yet... 3 seconds for wine? Wow - that would feel like an eternity compared to the half second I got with the milk. :)

Thanks for stopping in!

nice video and your tough...cant do that i like mine powdered im a weak sauce

Tough or not bright, that's debatable. Powdered gets pretty warm - the benefit, of course, is that you can control how much a little better. Which I think, overall, is a wise move :)

CHAMP....CHAMP....CHAMP....CHAMP....

Great Job Andy!

You know the taste test is going well when someone watching brings up the hospital. At that point you know you've accomplished something. I just like the fact that people can watch me and transition from "Gosh, he's dumb and this is funny," to "Wow, I really feel bad for him, this isn't fun, and I think I have an obligation to help." I'll be giving some away around here, just to share the experience with as many as are willing...

Hey Andy-

Yeah - just put in more basil last night. You're right, it's an awesome herb and I never get all I want before it goes to seed. I've got two 7 pot jonah plants by the sidewalk, perhaps they'll grab one of those. That would be fun :mouthonfire:

Pulpiteer,

Pepper Joe

Thanks Joe - I'm not sure if it turned out to be 100% (I didn't keep track that accurately) I put a few seeds in each cell - but i did get 100% of each variety that I wanted from your seeds, so the germ rate was pretty high and the plants are doing well. Thanks for stopping in!

Finally had a chance to read through your glog. Love the garden, and am guessing you don't live in a subdivision with an HOA? Seeing your efficient use of space makes me want to break out the shovel and dig out some more sod ... oh wait, I do live in an HOA control subdivision, even though I'm in a town of 2,500. Can you say ridiculousness?

Your pepper to tomato ratio looks about like mine (82 vs.17). Got to have enough for a few batches of homemade salsa, pasta sauce, and some open faced tomato-basil-bacon-mozzarella sandwiches, yum!

I was afraid of the Brain after watching Shane's video. Now after seeing yours, I'm completely terrified! The fact that you got through it without any profanities flying out of your mouth was a victory I think. ;)

Thanks for sharing your grow!

Thanks Bonnie - I'm working through your glog when I get spare moments here and there. It's been a crazy few weeks here with the job and so on. Sorry to hear about the HOA - they don't know what's good for them. You could spray tons of chemicals on a green lawn and be fine, but put in a garden that would be good for the environment as well as provide fresh produce and decrease your carbon footprint... ugh, I don't mean to rant. I do try to get as much use out of every square foot of garden space that I can, but I'm still just learning. That's part of why this website is so great. I love learning about growing stuff.

Yes, my peppers out number my tomatoes, and I'm not sure how wise that was. After trying the Brain Strain, I have no idea why I planted four of those plants... Whereas I'll eat and can my tomatoes for sure. Nothing like those garden fresh tomatoes.

Thanks for stopping by!

Ok, first things first. As I mentioned above it's been a rough few weeks, so my updates have been sparse, and I've fallen behind on my glog reading. I apologize. Also, I was not able to try Jamie's peppers like I wanted to. Since I was doing funerals and speaking engagements, I decided against rolling the dice on extreme stomach pain the next day. So - bad news - I did lose a few peppers to mold, which sucks. However, I have been able to try a few more.

I put a red 7 in a burger a while back - here is the picture:

burger.jpg

Very different from the ghost burgers. Much hotter and a different flavor that I couldn't quite place. I do know this: a burger is a great way to eat a superhot. Btw, those are bleu cheese crumbles on the bun. Ummmmm....

Tonight I tried a few different things. First off, I took Jamie's advice on attacking the second Brain Strain and I grilled it. I put it in with garlic, olive oil, onion, potatoes and let it sit on the grill. Second, I took the chocolate bhut and quartered it. We had pork chops (from organically grown pork we bought from someone from our church - the best!) and I threw that on towards the end of the grilling. Picture:

pork.jpg

First the Brain, definitely more manageable than eating it plain, but more manageable is so relative. I mean, I threw up before, so it doesn't take much to get better, does it? Very hot and hot straight off. Not a bad taste though - and Jamie was right, this was a better way to do it. You can actually taste it. The heat went straight to the back of my throat again though and it was intense. :fireball: Two potatoes, an onion and some garlic and one tiny pepper. Unbelievable. The chocolate bhut was definitely more subtle on the pork and not bad at all. The heat was good too. The bhuts sneak up on you. You almost forget you ate it and the heat kicks in. definitely good on the pork, I think it would be good in a barbecue sauce on pork...
The aftermath of this meal has been difficult. :hell: My family and I went out on a walk around town and I was hurting pretty bad. My stomach felt like it might cramp up. I don't know if you can build a tolerance to that sort of thing. I hope so.

Another picture along the theme of eating - my douglah that threw out pods went a little wonky and turned the pods red and kept them small. So I tried a few.
douglah.jpg

Definitely not superhot level. Maybe habanero? And it had a very fruity, sweet taste. In fact, it was wonderful. I'm not sure what went wrong, but it was my favorite pepper I've tried from my garden this year thus far (although I haven't tried many).

Some pod shots:
Aji Pineapple, I think, although it looks Aji Lemonish. They're close, I know.
aji.jpg

A Red Scotch bonnet - can't wait until this colors up
bonnet.jpg

And my peach scorps have some pods. They look mean. I love it. cool pods on these. I suspect they might be warm as well.
scorp.jpg

Alright, I'll try to post more tomorrow. I've been busy trying some different things in the garden this year. Have any of you heard of or read about permaculture at all? Fascinating stuff. I'm limited on space, but the whole companion planting, super organic stuff, bio-diversity is something I'm really grooving on. It's all new, so I'm trying some different things for me. We'll see. Oh, and I'm brewing some compost tea as well - thanks to MGOLD for the video he did.

Thanks for stopping by!

Holy pods Pulpiteer! *insert rolling red laughing emoticon* Looking great! What was your seed source for your Douglah? Obviously a cross of some sort??? Sometimes those surprises are good though! I got a few surprises out there myself that initially I was disappointed in, but once I saw and tasted the pods I got over it quick! If you really like it that's all that matters! Hope it grows consistent for you from seed for next year!

Ok, pulp...I just took the last hour catching up on your glog. You are one cool pastor! I have a lot of points and topics to hit on. Your garden's the beezkneez, that college boy is going to find a whole new reason to pray once you have some ripe pods, I'm curious about this permaculture you mentioned and will have to investigate, holy BrainStrain! I just ate my first fresh one as well. The stomach needs to be primed for things this hot...make sure to eat carbs and fats beforehand. (like noodles, fried foods, cheeses, avocado) they will line your stomach and diminish, if not eliminate any stomach issues. (most times) although I've eatin them were I felt great but three hours later I got some cramping (think it was do to too much carbonated beverages.) the brain does have a great flavor to it, it is very fruity, with a sharp sour note. I've been eating mass amounts of superhot powder...so when I eat peppers, I can taste them better. It scorches your throat though! Yikes, I am right there with you....I could feel it when I was watching you lol. It's almost like getting instant strep throat! So much fun though....and scary....but fun.....did I mention scary....I love it....and fear it....Hahahaha good times. Your plants pumped out and matured those little pods due to stress. Sometimes when pepper plants get stressed really bad, they will pump out a bunch of small pods that mature quickly. Kinda cool. All those leaves falling off gives way to some bushy bushy plants! I had the same thing happen and now they have jumped back and puffed out like blow drying a cat. In conclusion, you rock...keep rockin it and rock on.........rocker. Lol ttyl pulp
