So how do you think f1 crosses stack up against their parents in production?  Do they usually produce more?

Yep, true. Great yields with F-1. Then F-2's are often poor producers, until you get into F-3 then it will be better again depending on the traits of the specific phenotype. Some stay poor producers so you don't continue to grow those out of course.
