Question: What are the Differences between...

A Red Savina and a Caribbean Red besides the Heat?

I have seen both plants and I'm personally growing Caribbean Reds and (to me) they look identical...

pod shape, unripe pod color, pod size, flowers, leaves...

If you had to tell them apart without tasting them, what do you think would stand out between them?

Thanks :D

Haven't really ate Savinas (shame on me!), but Caribbean Red is one delicious chile! VERY nice aroma and overall flavour. very unique... nothing like any other hab I had.

I think that they are basically the same pepper, but someone tinkered with them and achieved a higher than average SHU and then put a TM on it. Here's what I found during a google search.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Red Savina pepper is a cultivar of the habanero chile (Capsicum chinense Jacquin), which has been selectively bred to produce hotter, heavier, and larger peppers. It is also commonly known as the Dominican Devil's Tongue Pepper or the Ball of Fire Pepper in Guyana.[citation needed]

Frank Garcia of GNS Spices, in Walnut, California, is credited with being the developer of the Red Savina habanero.[1] The exact method Garcia used to select the hottest strains is not publicly known.

The Red Savina is protected by the U.S. Plant Variety Protection Act (PVP #9200255)

Personally I think the caribbean reds are hotter. I don't believe the red savina was bred from Caribbean reds but was a freak or mutant red within a field of orange habs and its overly high SHU test was never duplicated. Very over-rated pepper in in my opinion.

obviously they are similiarly shaped since they are both habs. you'll get orange habs red habs choc habs that look the same no doubt theres tons of different types of habs. that was is very most likely bred from orange habs( as potawie said i agree with his whole post) and/or red ones. since there are red habs other than a caribian.

I too thought the Red Savina came from a field of Orange Habs and a farmer called Frank noticed one of the plants had red chillis and the seeds started from there. This might be a load of jack, I just read it somewhere ages ago.

That is the story I read but I don't know how accurate it is.

I have had Red Savinas many times, and IMO, generally I find orange habs to be just as hot if not hotter.

theres a point where alot of chili's get so dam hot that there is no differance... once your tounge goes numb does it really matter ?...ok, there is how long the heat lasts but flavour to me gives way more satisfaction...lol

whats your favourite pepper everyone for flavour and heat ? i'm curious to know.. thanks
