Quick mulch question..Good or not.

I have a very quick question to ask. I am off to get some mulch from a friend who is getting his trees cut down today. I know he has eucalyptus and gumtrees. Are mulch from these trees good for a garden mostly growing fruit trees, chilli and tomatoes.

Yesterday someone told me becareful becos they repell water or something. Then i was reading today which said you need to add nitrogen to your garden and the mulch can be toxic. Any ideas guys.

I believe eucalyptus and gum tree mulch would be very harmful for you chillis and tomatoes, unsure about fruit trees. And as far as I know nitrogen is bad for chillis and tomatoes and why miracle grow should not be used as a fertilizer for them as it has to much nitrogen.

hello mate
i know we dont have those plants here in the USA, but from what i know EUCALYTOL is antibacterial and may disrupt bacterial decomposition in your soil and that's not good either
i would opt out on it, if you can get your hands on pine straw, leaves, grass cuttings and household organics those would be a safer bet, i use them and have great success, generally these are easy to find, in fall my neighbors dont complain when i clean up the leaves and pine straw for them
hope this helps

thanks your mate Joe

As a mulch i would use the palm over the other stuff. Not sure what novicechilligrower was saying as nitrogen is needed by most all plants chillis included. If you have an established garden and are not planning on tilling the mulch in i cannot see much of a problem.

Mixing it in may cause nutrient lockout due to ph change or some other issues. Don't mix it in is what my advice would be.

My buddie has a tree service and i use everything... Camphor, Oak, Pine, Maple, and just about anything else. It only lasts a short time as it starts to break down, it gets filled with worms, and it makes a nice soil amendment in just a few months. If your worried about it, just stockpile some in the corner for a few months then use.

Thanks guys for the info. I will pile in on side of the garden and let it break down and then maybe use it. I'll go get some palm mulch today.
