Quintisho Growers please sign up

hello all,

i have been struggling with a quintisho plant for over a year now. i really like the way it looks and grows, and the taste was great (only had 3-5 pods last year:( )
seems this plant loves attention. neglect it and it starts to fall apart but alittle attention and it really seems to grow. also seems to attract aphids like a magnet does metal shavings.

please if you have grown this plant reply here and share...

from what i know there are 2 quintisho plants. the one i am talking about is the chinense. I got mine from Beth but i have traced it to terra Time and Tide.

here are the links i have on this plant;

please if you have ANY info share it. i reallly love this peper for some reason.

i am trying agian this year to get seeds but it HATES to be in the isolation bag but i am gonna suckseed this year.

i am curious about the pepper named Bode. it looks alot like the quintisho, in plant shape, flower, and pod shape and colour.

anyone?

at a risk of looking like i am just talking to myself anybody know if this plant likes shade much better or what? seems to like attention also, since it only seems to do good when i am babying it.

I doubt any pepper really likes shade, especially as far north as you are. What is it doing when you don't baby it? Is it in a pot? If so, what kind of potting medium, and how large is the pot?

I've thought about growing Bod'e before, but always settled on something else. Last year it lost out to Billy Goat http://www.chileplants.com/search.asp?CategoryID=1,9&Keyword=BILLY GOAT&SearchButton=Presse This year it lost out to Cheiro http://www.chileplants.com/search.asp?CategoryID=1,9&Keyword=CHEIRO&SearchButton=Pressed

Michael, I am growing Quintisho this year...:(
It is a chinense from www.peppermania.com

I also find the leaves of this plant special and very pretty and I am growing it in a quite cold climate in Northern Europe, i.e. Denmark. So far it is doing well, planted it out about two weeks ago in a 7-8 litre pot, it is standing against a wall which provides a nice afterwarmth late evening and night. Sun is on the plant from around 1 PM till the sun goes down...

Will post pics and more comments very soon...

Could you describe heat and taste?

i have a pod pic from last year i will try to dig up, but with some patients once it comes out of the bag it will be a real beauty.

as for baby'in it....
seed started @ 4-20-06, and grown in a pot. got aphids really young, sprayed NEEM oil and it got slight chemical burn. kept in isolation bag, never forming one pod. removed from bag and took forever to bounce back from the aphid attack UNDER the bag. formed 3 pods. end of season.
over wintered it. always when i have found aphids inside, they are also on the quintisho. plant is finally doing great and is outside but unless i water everyday, and give food, plus spray it frequently and talk to it i think it goes on strike.

many blooms and very very healthy/happy looking so it might be very soon.

Michael

oh yeah - potting medieum is Pro-Mix and i am using botanicare liquid organic ferts. seems to like regular ferts but not too strong.

i also got my seeds from Beth at Peppermania. she is a great person!!!
it sure sounds like this plant is a shade lover, or atleast not the most fond of HOT SUN.

the heat was pretty hot but not brutal (but personal heat levels are really realitive) but the flavour is awesome from what i remember, but only had a couple pods. lets just say unique flavour but in a very good way.

thanks for stopping bye and cant wait to share pics.

Michael

looks pretty happy Donnie. thanks for the update. mine is blooming like crazy but all dropping, but is most likely because of the isolation bag. we are getting a weather change so maybe i will get some pods to take under the mesh bag. soon i hope since i really want to get it out of the bag and take some pics.

not sure it ^^links are clickable or if you have to cut and paste.
isolation bags are used by many to keep insects from cross-pollenating your pods for collecting of pure seeds. usually when using isolation bags you try to keep some distance OR put in a place with less wind since some pollen can be carried by wind through the bags but you will most likely get self pollenation in the bag before that will happen.

Anybody think that it sounds like it could be a calcium deficiency -- ??

if you are referring to the dropping of blooms it is because the temperatures caused by the bag. gets way to hot in the day time and heat is retained in the bag over night. (to some extent)

Ok, is this some sort of commercial bag or something you made? I couldn't get the links to work. You realize you don't have to bag the entire plant to save seeds, don't you? You can just bag one branch or a couple of blossoms. Keeping the plant bagged all the time probably causes problems with heat and moisture, not to mention protecting the aphids from any predators.

I also wonder if you're giving this plant too much nitrogen. Poor fruit production and problems with aphids really sounds like too much nitrogen. Add in the humidity from the isolation bag and the fact that you're apparently limiting its sunlight and I can see why this plant is struggling.

yes I was saying that becuase of the dropping of blooms you didnt mention anything about high temperatures -- I was assuming the bag was of a cheese cloth type... the links didnt work for me either. Is it a solid bag i.e. plastic I ask because if heat is building up that high then it must be a very very fine mesh where no air can go thru or predators as Pam had mentioned.

also wasnt there something mentioned about hand pollinating and gluing somewhere? hmmmm.....

ok I just saw you fixed the link --- I dont see why the temperatures would be so high as to lose blooms with that type of "bag" could be to much nitrogen are the leaves thick and brittle as well as a poor fruit set?

Michael, I would also recommend using another method for isolating flowers - maybe the tea bag method or the one mentioned using a latex based glue which is put on a flower just prior to opening. I'm not sure how dense the net is, but I don't think it raises temperature that much, if at all...

With this being said, I have experienced this problem with dropping of flowers on ALL of the chinense varieties I have ever grown, for me it has simply been a matter of time before they started setting pods, so let's hope this happens soon...

i have no concerns about poor health on this plant. it is VERY picky, and currently very very healthy. once it has formed some pods i will take a picture for everyone. actually with the surge of cooler weather i think it is starting to pod up.

@Donnie,
yes the chinenses seem to like to drop flowers alot dont they. even worse while in the bag but as you said once they start forming watch out!!

btw, i used this method last year for seeds and it worked great for LARGE quantities of seeds, it just takes a little time.

My best isolation method is to bring desired plant(in pot) to a friends house many miles away or way in back of my property(10 min+ hike or so) but that means carting in water everyday too. I think the glue method would be great for small quantities of seed.
