Rare Mandarin Duck In Central Park

A duck native to East Asia is making a splash in New York City's Central Park, partly because of the bird's stunning colors and also because no one knows how the bird got there.
The Mandarin duck was spotted as early as Oct. 10, according to a Twitter account that documents bird sightings at the park. Then, the exotic bird flew away and no one knew where it went for almost two weeks, David Barrett, the creator and manager of Manhattan Bird Alert, told The New York Times. To photographers' delight, it was spotted back on Oct. 25.
Since then, the duck has attracted a large fan base and a small band of paparazzi. 
The new pond celebrity is easy to spot with a green and purple mohawk, sail-like feathers and purple chest.
Citing what appears to be a band around the bird's leg, Paul Sweet, collection manager in the Department of Ornithology at the American Museum of Natural History,  it likely escaped from a private collection or zoo.

Both ducks seems so unreal,such beautiful plumage..can only imagine the large crowds its attracting in Central PK..
Would love to visit towards the holidays but don't know if it would still be around.
Another beauty that appeared in 2015 in NY..more than likely d/ the warmer than usual weather in Nov/Dec that yr.


An extremely rare bird for Brooklyn, a male Painted Bunting in Prospect Park first reported November 29, 2015 by Keir Randall, has been delighting birders and viewers with its beauty and appetite. December 11, 2015, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York City. "Painted bunting breeding range is divided into a western and an eastern population.The western population ranges from Kansas south to Louisiana and Texas. The eastern population is limited to the coastal regions of North Carolina south to northern Florida. The western population winters primarily in Mexico and as far south as Panama. The eastern populations winter in southern Florida, including the Florida Keys, and are occasionally seen to winter in the Bahamas and Cuba (Lowther et al. 1999 The Birds of North America).

That's cool. I walk in CP at lunch sometimes. I'll have to look for it next time. I was there last Thursday, but only saw a bunch of colorful tourists. Most I ever saw bird-wise was a kestrel eating a sparrow.
