review Review THE GHETTO BLASTER" 2012 HBD Reserve

Ingredients:

Chocolate 7 Pod Douglah Peppers, Grape Preserve, Hennessey Cognac, Lime Juice, Watermelon Juice, Honey, Rhubarb Syrup, Vinegar, Tamari, Fleur de Sel. Ok - they could have simply listed Soy Sauce and Sea Salt, buy Tamari and Fleur de Sel do sound so much cooler.

First the wait:

I saw the product advertised on http://www.heartbreakingdawns.com/ a few weeks ago. I chatted with Johnny at the HBD booth at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Chile festival and he talked it up. I felt like I was buying a new iPad. The product officially went on sale October 1st at 12:00 A.M. I logged on the site at 11:55 and hit "F5" to reload occasionally, not seeing the "add to cart" visible, UNTIL the witching hour arrived. Then, by the magic of of some script, or perhaps a scheduled task, the "add to cart" option appeared. I availed myself of the option, and went off to sleep. U.S. Priority Mail Shipping from New Jersey to NY. is fast and the package arrived today. As promised, they included a 1 oz "sampler," along with the main hand signed and numbered bottle.

Review:

Smell - I've never had a Chocolate 7 Pod Douglah, but I recognized the scent of a superhot.

Thickness - This is a good thick consistency, but not lumpy.

Taste and Heat - I took around 1/4 of a tablespoon swirled it around and swallowed. I was instantly greeted by the heat, less intense than chewing a yellow 7, but the familiar bite nonetheless. As my tolerance continues to increase, I didn't panic from the heat, but did experience a little "worry." Other than puree and sauces with extract, this was one of the hottest sauces I have had. It had a good complex sweetness that lingered with the heat. The lime and Watermelon Juice were noticeable, but I wasn't able to distinguish any of the other individual ingredients, although they worked well together. A great sauce!

Now, I have a dilemma: After I finish the sampler bottle, do I open the main bottle, or just have fun looking at it and maybe try to Ebay it in a few years for a profit. I'll probably end up just eating it!

I'll never understand the concept of a "collectible not meant to be opened".

Most hot packed acidic products have a 2-3 year shelf life.

Collect the bottles - eat the sauce!
:D

I understand a very cool-looking bottle, some artsy-fartsy way of decorating it with wax resin, but at least have the sauce available in standard bottles for consumption!

Even hot sauce collector extraordinaire Vic Clinco will get two bottles of most products he gets - one for his collection and one to open up and eat.

I could see that, but in 3+ years you have a fancy bottle of spoiled stuff.

I do love the creative marketing in the industry though - there are some spectacular collectible a out there. At some point if like to do limited edition wax sealed hand crafted batches, but I'd still want people to eat them.

I wish the sauce would last forever, but understand the shelf life issues. I'll open the bottle at some point, as I have already finished the sampler tube. I will save the bottle when it is finished though!
